- Today I pull the Austin Mini Cooper "S" out to clean it and fix it up for the new owner. I find the fuel gauge and speedometer do not work and need fixed.

Needs more room, sells smallest car. The funny thing is it's probably not your smallest car. She's gorgeous, I can see why you would be hesitant to sell her. A buddy is rebuilding his Cooper S that his mom used to race in the 60s and 70s, she did ice racing and road racing in it. The engine is being rebuilt by a mini specialist on the East Coast, and he's doing the body work. They're really great cars, and this is a fine example. The new owner is one lucky person. Also, your filmmaking/editing is just top notch, such a great drive video there at the end.
They have gone up in price in the UK the price £39,000 - £46,000.

Know what you mean. I live in Québec, Canada. I always had smaller cars, my very first one was a Datsun 510 I souped up a bit.
I gave those Cudas, Chevelles and Mustangs a run for their money in country roads !

I had a Morris Cooper S in 1969. Mine had the 1275 cc engine, twin fuel tanks, and hydrolastic suspension. Baby blue body with a white roof, RHD because was made in Australia. The most fun car I have ever had. Great acceleration and very agile on winding roads.
They are such great cars. We daily drove one for years. When we had kids we sold mine, and stored my wifes, as it is her first car. After 7 years it's now back on the road we use it as a daily driver again. I did not realise I missed it so much, completely addicted again!
The Cooper S gets most attention, but in reality every Mini is great and equally fun.
They say if you have more than three of something there is a fine line between collector and hoarder. 🤔
When I learned to drive back in 1976, my driving instructor used a mini 1275 GT. The first time I got the really try it out was after I passed my test and Mr Rendell said "right then, let's see you drive it properly". At the time my mum also had a Mini, a 1000cc estate and when allowed to borrow it I would thrash around feeling like I was doing 100 mph when I was actually doing 60. I first learned to deal with understeer driving that car.... but not before I had to pay for a headlight glass.
My goodness. I just relived having my very similar Mini. I had one just like that one in the same colors. It was a 66 1275 S with twin tanks and a special driver seat but otherwise a clone. Even the twin pipes are there. The only car I wish I had kept. Thank you for the ride.

Just got my 65 back from the paint shop, waited for better weather but as soon as the sun came out and the roads were dry I went for a 50 mile cross country scream with 100 smiles a gallon!
Had a ride in a Cooper many years ago. Driver never exceeded the speed limit, (in town, 30 mph), but he never slowed down for corners either. Pulled some pretty incredible corners.
Yep, they're known to take any corner at speed, just don't let off the accel half way thru the turn, lol.

Most of my Minis are in pieces and parts....or haven't driven in years. I learn more about Minis from your videos than my cars. tHanks for all the fun videos.
Totally envious. Had one of the first Cooper 997cc back in the 70's and remember how much fun it was. Back then they were two a penny not sure what they're making in the USA but crazy prices now in the UK.
Steve- at 00.28 I see two cars on the rack I once owned, a Fiat 1100 which was my first car I bought when I was 16 in '66. The other is the Renault Dauphine. Here's a fun fact- when I did the brakes on the Renault I COULD NOT find rear axle seals. This was around '73 so no internet and really no Renault dealers at that time. Spent several days on the phone and driving a few hundred miles with feeble hopes. Finally I took an old seal with me with the collars they're pressed into to a parts store I used to work at and they let me go through the floor-to-ceiling rack of boxes of seals. I finally worked my way to the bottom shelf with maybe 4 boxes left to open. Opened a box and I took one look and the heavens opened up. We mic'ed it up and pressed one in and it worked. Get this- it was for a 1964 &1/2 Mustang 6 cylinder convertible. In '63 and '64 Ford had mid-year releases of new models and I think the Mustang was one of them . I'm 72 and I refuse to take my one true automotive miracle to the grave with me. Tell your friends.
I worked at a foreign car dealership (Jaguar, MG, Alpha Romeo, Toyota) in '69. The owner had a '63 Mini that he raced, it was good for 120mph. It wasn't pretty but it went like stink. They took as a trade-in a complete and original ex- Mass State Police 1947 Indian Chief for $475 and I passed. Sigh.
Love your channel. If you knew the cars I owned, you'd understand why.
'61 Fiat 1100 ran fine after my first complete engine rebuild
'61 Hillman Husky Wagon threw a rod through the block coming home from college
'61 Morris Minor Convertible paid 50 cents and a pack of Marlboros for it.
'60 Morris Van 2-year restoration project
'61 Metropolitan Convertible lots of duct tape to keep out the cold
'59 TR3
'65 TR4A rust-free, not pretty but rebuilt everything and fresh Michelins, predictable drifts through the corners
'63 Fiat 600 GREAT little car, the radiator doubled as the heater core in winter, suicide doors folded back for AC in summer
'61 Renault Dauphine w/'64 1/2 Mustang 6-cylinder convertible axle seals but enough about that.....blew a head gasket on a first date.
'53 Jeep CJ 3B perfect for getting in and out of trouble, many, many times. Oh, God..... so many times.
'69 Toyota Corolla 1200 badly spanked my friend's V8 Chevy Impala on a beer-induced road race home from a party. Kept it in the power band and the rest was easy.
'47 Ford Sedan girls loved it. Girls 'parents, not so much. Not at all, actually. Something about that back seat....
'61 Vespa Grande Sport the most fun on 2 wheels. There's a story about the July 4th Bicentennial 1976 bonfire, a bag of ice and a rack of beers in the storage compartment that ended up at the hospital for a few stitches, but hey, you can't put a price on fun.

Used to own a mini cooper S and had 98mph out of it with 4 people in and a tail wind behind me lol. Great little car.

Great car. Had a Cooper while in university and it was so much fun and could surprise many 'quick' domestic cars at the lights. Did some local rallies and it performed well, steered just fine with the handbrake!

I'm actualy a vintage German car fan but I'm currently restoring a 64 Morris Cooper S 1071cc that I bought 30 years ago for $600. Sorry not for sale but maybe someday.🤑

Boy isn't that the way it always goes, the one you go to sell doesn't want to leave home and procrastinate to start. Did however enjoyed hearing all the other vehicles running even the Datsun with the IV drip

Expect it's a 1275 cc and I would have sold 2 or 3 of anything else to keep it. Fuel tank held 5 Imperial gallons if I'm correct. I spent my weekends at Mosport with a very close pal who won the Under Two Litre Canadian Sedan Championship in the late 1960's and early 1970's.
Driving past MIT one day around '69 I saw a Mini parked between 2 big American cars. Somebody had cut it across the middle and shortened it maybe 2 feet and pop-riveted it all back together. That's right, pop rivets. The front half of the rear wheel opening was cut into the door, if that helps with you envisioning it. I'd guess parking wasn't anywhere much of a problem.

You could sell 10 of those little beauties and still not make any room, my fondest car memories come from the ownership of a mini and that was long ago.

Funny, I was out in my own little red Mini myself today, Steve! .....except mine's red with a white roof (like Paddy Hopkirk's Monte Carlo contender). Neat little cars. I've been around A- and B-series BMC engines most of my life, but never owned a Mini...until 2018.
My daughter absolutely adores them and when her sister bought the car I had purchased for them both to learn to drive in, the youngest said "Well, you'll just have to get a Mini for ME to learn in then, won't you Dad?!" So I did - but it was a short while before she was back on the road, but she was ready before the day my youngest got her Learner's License and we've already had a few memories in the little car.
I have a Triumph Stag and a Triumph 2500S as well, but the Mini is the only one that sounds like I am doing 100mph when I am still under the speed limit! You can have so much fun with the little cars - even at slower speeds - throwing them into corners and leaving modern cars well behind you because you don't have to slow down.....just accelerate up to the corner, turn in, back off the throttle to bring the rear end round to where you want it to be and then plant the foot again. A thoroughly awesome little trooper, these wee things......and they will also cruise around town with no bother at all.
I've driven the Mini about 5000 miles since she went back on the road in late 2020 and the longest distance so far I think is around 120 miles one way. When you consider the road I was travelling on (mostly winding and twisty up and over hills with a few very tight corners for most of the latter half of the trip), the little Mini was fair moving to do it in 2.5 hours.....but boy was it fun and I never broke the speed limit once! To say the little car has won me over against her bigger stablemates would be understating it a bit and I am seriously thinking of getting one of my own when my youngest eventually moves out and takes it with her..
I recently had to choose between the Stag and the 2500S as to which one I would sell and as the Mini is as much fun and as enjoyable to drive as the Stag (for different reasons, although both make a very appealing sound), it would be the Stag that would go. I will miss her for the open-top cruising aspect, but not for the fuel bill - THAT is for sure!

Yes, they seem to like them in Iowa. Much better for keeping traffic flowing instead of endless sets of traffic lights.

I've owned five Minis over the years and loved every one of them. Never had a Cooper but I did have a 1275GT which was a great little thing. Nothing drives like an origanl Mini.

This takes me back! They only used hydrolastic on Minis for a couple of years I think. I think this is too high all round BTW. Sounds like the carbs need balancing as well, but great condition!
I still find it trippy to see roundabouts in the US, and they seem to be popping up really fast too.

Don't think the 1960s version was officially sold in the US so you may have problems there. However the UK has plenty of parts and people who still remember what they may need, but obviously the import routine may rack up your costs.Apparently the designer would not put a radio in it because "it distracted the driver" LOL

There is a thriving industry for standard and competition parts in the UK, even bodyshells so not a problem. Import costs should not be a problem compared to the high and increasing value of these cars. You need to keep it in tiptop condition.

The second tank was optional and I thought most were ordered with it but the heritage certificate on this one shows it was not originally equipped. Maybe they wanted to save the weight for racing?

Well, now I don't feel so bad about having to move my motorcycle every time I want to get my Mini out. Mine is a new Mini (2008) though...although I really want a classic to match someday.

Bit of a dumb question, but why do you have so many cars? I mean it does seem slightly excessive.
Does America have twisty roads 16foot or less wide for two-way traffic, if so Steve get one of your Minis out on them. Even an 850cc Mini can be great fun on the right roads so a Cooper S . . . I'm not sure it can really be appreciated on American roads but get it on British, or European, B and unclassified roads and it really shines.
America is a big place, mate. There is every kind of road you can imagine, and then some.
@@johna1160 fair enough just that all the videos I've seen where they say they're on small twisty roads you could get two Minis passed each other with both fully sideways, and some longer cars, with the twists being more progressive curves. Everything is so much bigger in America especially compared to little Britain.
