Uhhhh, he didn't give hardly any answers. "Water heater running out of hot water" He didn't say "Hot water not as hot after a while", or "Hot water not as hot as it usually is". The title of this video suggests the the hot water is fine but then runs out earlier than it did before. This is usually the lower element going bad, calcium covered so it doesn't transfer heat well once the cold water starts mixing, and sludge over the bottom element. Those problems are more common then the non stop blather about mixing valve and the dip tube. If the dip tube is snapped you'll notice after a couple minutes that it will be less hot than when you first got hot water but You'll have warm water for a looooonnnng time.

Great video, saved me a service call. I am remodeling my bathroom and the plumber put in a new valve body for the tub/shower and was going install the valve after the tile guy finished. However, the hot and cold water to the tub weren't shut off, so the hot water flowed through the valve body to the cold water pipes, leaving me with the situation of only a few minutes of hot water before if got cold/warm (exactly like your "leaking shower valve" description). I simply turned off the cold water valve to the tub and it fixed the problem until the plumber installs the valve into the valve body. Weird situation.
Awesome, we got our answer in the 4 minutes it took for our hot water heater to turn lukewarm to cold. Hot pipe hot, run water...4 minutes cold to the touch. Thanks a bunch!

I was nervous to replace my mixing valve because I wasn't sure if that was the actual problem, but it for sure was. The home I want to buy comes standard with a tankless water heating system and their motto is “endless heat not instant heat” 😂 I cant wait! That one of my features that sold me on the house
Bro, I just bought a new old home, and I'm having this problem. The only thing is it happens with both my showers. It's hot for five minutes, then done! So my question is, if it's both showers and not the Faucets, what do you think the problem is. I changed the top element a few days ago, and the old one was nasty and busted. I'm looking to change the bottom one today. I figure if the top looked like that, then the bottom can't look any better. Your video was great, one of the best all the way around. Clarity of the video, explaining how to fix the problems and especially the audio. Great job👍🏽🙏🏽
Hot water less and less in shower, I hold hot and cold water on top of the hot water tank, temperature of both pipes were the same around 80 deg, Is it deep tube cold water broken ? Thank you very much for your fantastic video
Right on brother! Your troubleshooting explanation on this issue was absolutely "THE BEST" advice in it's simplest form. Attaboy pal, you got the point across to even the most novice who have no knowledge on this topic. Thank You! ++Peace & Rock n' Roll++
I've watched many of your videos - they are always crisp and informative - especially from a guy from Minnesota!!! We are retired from Eden Prairie and we are living in the Tucson area - keep it up!!!
That has been my problem for a while. I experience lukewarm or cold water at some faucets, especially the main shower. I have to physically push and hold the handle of the valve toward the hot side to get any hot water. The inner stem of that valve was replaced several months ago because it leaked and was partially deteriorated from corrosion, but I was unable to remove the outer sleeve with it due to being stuck inside the valve body. Since then, the valve will work its way open and I have to keep it closed by wedging an old broom handle between it and the opposite wall of the shower. I've watched other TH-cam videos showing how to remove stuck Moen valves using special tools or other methods, but before that happens, I need to investigate why water doesn't flow from the head of a second shower. Water flows from that valve when I remove entire valve (stem and sleeve), (did some troubleshooting) but not from the showerhead. Possibly some obstruction between the valve and showerhead? Need to fix it first and have it functional before I tackle the main shower. Also, in order to get hot enough water at the kitchen sink faucet, I have to open the main bathroom sink faucet (turned to hot) to which in turn it runs cold water during that time. The same happens with the main bathroom sink faucet and having to open the second bathroom sink faucet in order to get hot water at the main bathroom sink. I attempted to drain sediment from the water heater a few months ago and found sand clogging the drain valve. That evidently was caused by the corroded underground galvanized pipe, which was replaced, from my well which was pulling in sand and debris a couple of years ago, causing all kinds of problems, and I failed to realize that the tank should have been drained at that time. I've seen other videos that show how to drain a tank when the drain valve is plugged. Just need to implement that soon. I willing to bet, that after watching your videos about dip tubes, that sediment and possibly a faulty dip tube could be the cause of all the problems. Also purchased a replacement anode rod and was planning to replace the old one but can't seem to break it loose. The age of the water heater is going on ten years.
Very good video. I Will try this out. We just had a new water heater installed a few months ago and now the hot water doesn't stay hot that long and the pressure is not is completely dependent on if someone is running water at the same time. Any ideas.
Super helpful video! You mentioned how the problem would be the dip tube if I can hold the tube for longer than 10 seconds... how would I go with taking care of that specifically? Thank you!
You have great videos! I have done a lot of troubleshooting today. I have two showers furthest from my (2) 9 year old, 40 gallon WHs with recirculating pump, that is loosing hot water within 1-2 mins., like a 20 degree drop and the holds steady at 105 and 111 degrees for each respective shower. WHs are turned up and mixing valves set to allow max hot water. I do notice popping/crackling sound with one WH. Meanwhile, my kitchen sinks and other shower nearer to WHs are 140-135 degrees steady, no drop. The hot side pipes on both WHs are hot to the touch when checked after temp drops. Can two shower valves be bad? Also, we always lose hot water in these 2 showers when washer or dishwasher is on. I'd appreciate answering this too. Thanks!!
I just installed a new gas hot water heater for my tenant on the second floor of a 3 family house. Now he has little water pressure in his shower and it’s not very hot. The kitchen and bathroom sinks are good? What do you think? The pressure and heat are for the shower and tub in the shower are both low. And again it’s fine in kitchen and bathroom sinks.
As a professional handyman, I get my share of calls about hot water not lasting long enough, and almost every time, it's due to a malfunctioning lower heating element. The problem is solved when I replace it.
Carl Stewart thanks for you comment. I’m having this exact same problem in both restrooms. Once the hot water goes out we have to wait about 1hr or so before the hot water comes back. We don’t run both showers at same time because that will make the water run out faster. Will try this first, thanks again.
@@PeteR-wh1tw There's a way to test the elements to know for sure if they're bad or not. It's very simple & easy. Here's how: th-cam.com/video/LxnZQZm9YcI/w-d-xo.html
Very good video. Thanks. My tank is just over a year old. plumber can't find an issue. electrician can't find an issue. two showers, each with separate hot and cold knobs. Water is extremely hot when first turned on in the AM. But lasts about 10 minutes at best. next person has to wait for it to reheat.... any ideas or suggestions would be much appreciated.. Thank you..
I have a newer install with new piping (not copper). The cold line is much warmer than hot line. Mixing valve or dip tube? Local co. wants to install a thermostatic mixing valve.
I have a 40 gallon gas A.O. water heater that runs hot water for about 20 seconds and then it's just luke warm and that's the case for all facets in the home. Sounds like dip tube but the hot pipe coming out of the water heater is still hot even though the water coming out of the facet it lukewarm. The sink has a hot only knob so it's not a mixing valve
Nice video. Right to the point. What are your thoughts on 30 minute shower. Should this make it cold for everyone else. Seems like there should be plenty of hot water in tank.
ok informative video but not sure if this is still well managed youtube channel but just in case i Have a question. i'm in the middle of kitchen renovations right now and 2 days ago my wife noticed that the water pressure is a bit low plus hot water is very minimal. so first thing i check was the main line of cold water. cool i found out that the main water valves wasn't ON all the way so i turned it to the "max" level. then we went to 3 day vacay. then my daughter noticed that the shower pressure is getting really low, it will start with a normal pressure then will slow down. so isolated the waiter pressure from the sink where i have a separate water control. Cold water control feels normal pressure is coming out. then when i turned on the Hot water control, it will start normal w/ hot water but eventually will die down as if hot water tank was getting emptied. Then few seconds again, I will turn water heater back on again then it will start normal then not even a minute hot water will ran out.. so what do you think could be the reason why? Thank you.
First, I would check the pressure relief valve before you go ripping apart the shower or switching out thermostats or mixing valves. It could simply be the plumber didnt let the air out of the tank/lines.
Hello, I have a rheem water heater about 3 years old the water is always is very lukewarm even if I set it to very hot. Sometimes both the hot side and cold side seems hot. My heater has a mixing valve connecting the hot and cold side (in Canada this is mandated to ensure there is no scalding)😮 to ensure there is . I tried opening the cold side. But the guide tube in the cold side is kind of deep and doesn’t easily come out. So I put it back to the way it was..How do I know whether the issue is with the dip tube or the mixing valve above the water heater? Would appreciate your insight. Thanks.
Excellent video. I wish you can diagnose my problem. My shower hot water lasts only about 5-6 mins. Changed to new Rheem electric water heater, plumber changed one of shower mixing valve thinking that is affecting the other 2 shower water. Unfortunately not enough hot water in shower continues. Any idea what might be the source of problem? Thank you.
Our electric water heater. The fill / cold water inlet is on the bottom , the hot water outlet is halfway up on the side. Here recently filling the bathtub its running out of hot water before the tub is halfway full. It used to fill the tub up to the overflow and still be hot.
Thank you so much for this. I live in an apartment and have been trying to have these issues fixed for years now but the maintenance people are either incompetent or lazy. Now I can investigate the issues myself and see if I can do something.
@Hector Govea , Is it "gas" or "electric"? Did you have it installed, or did you install it yourself? Has this been the issue of being just lukewarm right from the start of turning it on? These few simple questions need answered first to know what we're dealing with and who?
@@216Numbskull it’s gas. We self-installed it well had a family friend installed it . It’s been like warm from the start. It really never gets warm. We want return the darn thing . I’m not sure
@@hectorgovea8590 Your friend does have knowledge of HWT installations right? Reason I ask is to eliminate common mistakes that people who think they know, make common mistakes. One of the biggest mistakes made and reason for the problem your having on gas water tank installs is connecting your copper pipe fittings to the new tank. If they made the new connection by sweating the pipe (soldering it) while the copper fitting were connected to the tank, that most likely will cause the problem? Reason being they may have heated that fitting up so hot that the tank also gets to hot ruining the dip tube. Secondly, is your gas valve set at the proper temperature? It might sound silly but I've seen simple things overlooked. You should have it set @ 120 to 125 range. Do not set temp any higher it could scald someone not paying attention. It also could be unfortunately a bad unit altogether that you bought, may have got a lemon, or bought a brand you weren't aware of that constantly has issues due to cheap parts? Plus, if you have a hot water recirculation system, the check valve may be bad and needs replaced? And again I know this sounds kind of dumb, but make sure the lines are installed on the proper sides, C to C, H to H. Start there to rule out the issue. Best to you!
@@216Numbskull thank you for the advice. I guess this friend might have thought he knew. I know he didnt use soldering. He just connected the supply line. I did see that he was tightening them really tight. He might damage the cold side where the dip tube is. As for the temperature I have it at 120 but doesn’t get hot so it’s not an option right now but I will see what I can figure out. I am thinking checking the dip tube. I appreciate your advice
Hello, what about if only one appartement doesn’t have hot water, or max 105 degrees for minutes and goes down to cold even shower valve is new? New recirculating pump in building water heater room
Great video & great explanation! I have an older shower faucet with separate valves, where the hot water is never hot enough, and soon just cold. I'm guessing it's going to be the valve stem... Ever run into that situation?
Hi, I had a new water heater replaced in Dec. 2017 as well as a bathroom renovation. I had problem in the beginning when my shower only had cold water coming out of it even though my plumber said there was nothing wrong with the valve. We got it working eventually, but had to tear up the new tile in the shower. Now, I am running out of hot water before the end of my shower. I did what you said, went down to the water heater and grabbed the hot pipe. It was very warm, but not so hot that I couldn't grab it for long. I checked all my other faucets like you suggested, and they are very hot. I hate to tear up my shower again. Any suggestions on what to fix first?
@ I had my son take off the handle and look at the valve. He adjusted it and now it’s fine. I wish my plumber would’ve done that in the first place, instead he took out all the tile and had to fix all that. It wasn’t necessary.
Interesting in 33 years of being in the trade I have never seen a broken dip tube, I’m not saying it can’t happen or that this young man is incorrect because this may be a regional situation. What I have experienced here in California is that the tanks don’t get flushed and sediment builds up therefore reducing the capacity of hot water storage. Sometimes we get lucky and a good flush make the problem go away but other times the sediment turns into a rock and there isn’t much we can do economically to fix the problem. If you have hard water flush your tank once or twice a year depending on the need. By the way that water heater is not to code in California due to it being hard piped directly to the water heater, here we need flexible lines for earthquakes, they also need to be strapped to the wall.
Am not a plumber, but totally agree with Boxing guru... dip tube just sits there hanging off cold feed nipple, and typically these days is some kind of plastic, so odds of it breaking on its own just from time and use - very slim. And hey Boxing Guru, this question for you on transporting a new water heater: if a new water heater is laid on its side the dip tube is horizontal and just floating, bouncing around with all the stress at the attachment to the lower cold nipple - i could envision this breaking a dip tube before water ever gets in the tank. Not sure if I'm missing something in all that, but would you say it's safer to transport a water heater in its vertical orientation?
We have two Hot water tanks - one designated for the upstairs and one for the downstairs but we are continually running out of Hot water both up and down. Any suggestions?
I pulled the dip tube; it's good (gas hot water heater installed a year ago. Warm water from all fixtures after a couple of minutes. If not mixing valve, or dip tube, no sediment, any ideas? Water comes out really hot at first.
My house has 2 showers. Why does the hot water last way longer in one shower than the other? One shower runs out while the other still gets plenty of hot water
Great video with helpful information! I’m currently having this problem with a AO Smith 50 gallon electric water heater 2013 model and installed the same year. Seems like the dip tube is the issue. If so would total replacement of the heaters or dip tube replacement be the better option? My last heater lasted about 20 yrs and I was blindsided by having this problem in 8yrs from a unit that I believed would last at least 10-15 years smh. Thanks again for the useful insight!
So what if the hot pipe is hot but not enough hot water in sinks or tub? Drip tube? Can’t be mixing valve right? Why does hot water last longer if I run washer with hot water?

Thanks 😊 for the video. How 🤔 much approximately will either of those problems cost to get fixed by a plumber?
Thank you, this video was very helpful to me.
Awesome! Glad you found the video helpful :)
Looks like my dip tube is broken. Thank you sir.
What was the outcome please? Was a heating element burnt out?
Was the tube broken?
@@tedlahm5740 not sure I moved out and never fixed it. The beauty of being a tenant.
Thanks for sharing
Great video, thank you!
What about the thermostat or the heating elements?
Good video, can u run out of hot water because of sediment. Can removing the sediment restore the efficiency of your water heater thank you
What would be a condition of bad heating elements?
Excellent video. I wish you can diagnose my problem.
My shower hot water lasts only about 5-6 mins. Changed to new Rheem electric water heater, plumber changed one of shower mixing valve thinking that is affecting the other 2 shower water. Unfortunately not enough hot water in shower continues. Any idea what might be the source of problem? Thank you.
Could it be one of the elements is burned out?
Our electric water heater. The fill / cold water inlet is on the bottom , the hot water outlet is halfway up on the side. Here recently filling the bathtub its running out of hot water before the tub is halfway full. It used to fill the tub up to the overflow and still be hot.
Thank you so much for this. I live in an apartment and have been trying to have these issues fixed for years now but the maintenance people are either incompetent or lazy. Now I can investigate the issues myself and see if I can do something.
Bro thanks you explain that very well!
Works great. We have it hooked up to a single sink and haven’t run out of hot water yet
Thanks for teaching love your video.
What about a lower thermostat or an upper thermostat
Hello We just bought a new gas water heater. We are only getting luke warm water at best. Its new but it just doesnt heat at all. Need help?
@Hector Govea
, Is it "gas" or "electric"?
Excellent explanation sir! Thank you !
Awesome logical advice. Much apprrciated
Thanks 🙏, your video really helped me out. I actually had a leak in shower. Thanks again.
Effective and efficient
Nice video - how do you decipher if you have a faulty mixing valve?
Comment on the Function of the two HEATING elements in the heater?
Hi, did you ever find a solution??
@ I had my son take off the handle and look at the valve. He adjusted it and now it’s fine. I wish my plumber would’ve done that in the first place, instead he took out all the tile and had to fix all that. It wasn’t necessary.
Excellent video 👍
What kind of flashlight Whit magnetic rechargeable you use what brand is it
Interesting in 33 years of being in the trade I have never seen a broken dip tube, I’m not saying it can’t happen or that this young man is incorrect because this may be a regional situation.
Could be a bad element too tho which is the easiest to fix
Replaced water heater replaced all Fossetts have very little hot water did everything you said any other ideas .
thanks
I pulled the dip tube; it's good (gas hot water heater installed a year ago. Warm water from all fixtures after a couple of minutes. If not mixing valve, or dip tube, no sediment, any ideas? Water comes out really hot at first.
Very clear explanation! Thank you!
My house has 2 showers. Why does the hot water last way longer in one shower than the other? One shower runs out while the other still gets plenty of hot water
Same here
Mixing valve leaking inside? Turn off the COLD valve that FEEDS that shower. see if you stay hot longer. comment please
