umm..it's kinda weird but uhh how smolder kinda works is is that they changed his w cd to be, firstly-ok i am versus a lee sin mid-umm they changed his w cd to be longer early, but one second less at max
Another thing you didn't talk about that AP smolder benefits from is the healing from mom, it's a 75% AP ratio with no AD ratio.
Lich bane, if you're going full ap. It makes the q actually do something.
Definitely. His Q works too well with sheen procs to not do that. You basically flip the power from Q to W by going AP... and W is longer CD. So you miss out on a lot.
Honestly there might even be value in getting a nashors as well with how the champ functions

I think the true damage alone is enough to not need lich bane. He needs lich bane for his Q to do something early game only, when Smolder is only good late game. Kind of a waste I believe.

The nerf is specifically targeting smolder bottom's early poke. Rank 1 W hitting 1 champion does -34 dmg and has 1s longer cooldown. Hitting 2 champs does about -30 dmg to each of them, -60 in total.
Hot take: They should just make Smolder a mage and be done with it

@@fafnir01 Matter of opinion, but I think he's the worst *designed* champion Riot has released in years, and the only reason he's "in a good place" is because he's been given arbitrary buffs to make him competitive. The kit itself is a mash of awkward mixed with clunky mixed with a goofy theme. And it makes the "ADC" role given to him seem so out of place.
Again, matter of opinion, but going from Hwei to Smolder was like falling off a design cliff

That W minion damage nerf is actually pretty useful, since you never oneshot casters with W anymore. You can just always W without worrying about losing q stacks. Although in situations where you just wanna shove fast, it is obviously a bit worse.
It didn’t one shot casters before, and now it has no pressure early game. Huge nerf

Only 4 people being full build at 43 minutes (and three of them being on the enemy team) is kinda crazy, isn’t it? And then Pekin just being hilariously ahead of all of them and being extra full build.

I was thinking, at 28:50 when choosing his last item, because of the burst on enemy team, is it ever the play to go jak'sho last item? (or maybe even sterak's if he built AD?)
Full defensive item probably cuts too much damage from the build imbo (in my Bronze opinion). Maybe Banshee’s?
Sterak’s might work, and you wouldn’t be losing out since the passive scales off base AD only. But I wouldn’t go it.

AP Smolder was already super strong in ARAM. Can't wait for the buffs.
Haven't finished the video so don't know if Pekin mentions it, but another change they made is that you still get a stack of dragon practice from your Q if the minion dies while the projectile is traveling (see 1:07 for example). Since all five of you are competing for cs it could be a potential extra stack or two per wave at least, even if someone else winds up getting the last-hit.
I could see Ziggs doing a build kind of like this. AP Smolder looks like a lot of fun, you know people are going to try running him Support now even though it probably won't be very good.

I think Lich Bane for increasing Q dmg would be better. Also what about grudge? gives lethality, %pen, haste and also a slow, felt like it wud have been better than lord doms
I thought that briefly too but if you think about it:
The armor pen on grudge scales with lethality, its weaker than other last whisper items if you don’t have other lethality items. It would have been like 20% and 15 flat instead of 30%, so it would probably have come out even at best on the champs he was building it for and barely better against champs with no armor.
Plus his CDR was probably high enough that diminishing returns were kicking in a bit and his W and ult already apply slows which I’m not sure if those stack with grudge (and grudge slow only kicks in if they’re below half which is about when they’re getting finished off by harvest and elder burn anyway)
Couple all that with the fact that lord Dom’s gives up to 15% extra damage against high HP targets and I think it’s better than grudge all around. Also the crit has some very minor benefits too.
Although I do think Mortal Reminder could have been a better choice than Lord Dom’s or Grudge to deal with Aatrox and Lee Sin healing.
Do you think lich bane would be good on AP smolder? It would proc off Q and benefits from AP ratio, makes the initial damage have a little more pop to help lower down to execute threshold
it works great with lichbane but I wouldnt build it as first item. Liandrys then lichbane, riftmaker etc.

I'd think that malignance doesn't work with smolder, as his R deals only physical damage right?
Malignance item description says that it procs off any ultimate damage, not just magic (9:17 for item info). Pekin mentions a little earlier that he doesn’t care about the mr shred.
You can see it trigger the most enormous Malignance field at 47:16 🤯

This discussion is almost as old as me and I was born in 2004 but...
Riftmaker before liandrys in a champion that doesn't fight for that long makes no sense. If it wasn't for the ult cdr even malignance before liandrys would be trolling.
Currently you can go malignance with liandrys for first two items and then probably something like lichbane, nashor's tooth and then rabadons... Also zhonias has a zholt in thiz build.
Oh and also you can just go liandriz into the mask and not finish riftmaker until later. I would have to test but that's probably better!

this is kinda throw a bit build, dunno why he get malignance first item when smolder already has mid cd ult not too low not too long. it's not even help much on lane compare to other ap item like liandry or lichbane

I like the idea of a caster that builds AP and deals physical/true damage.
I just wish it was not some jank they added to a champion with another identity.
Its basically just anti-corki, who builds mostly ad to deal magic damage
Problem is his itemization is still a bit awkward. But yes I believe his intended design is to be reverse Corki. You gain nothing from building AD

I am not liking these changes. They are giving way too many AP ratios to a champion that scales infinitely (and they did it because they were nerfing his early, just to compensate). 100% Riot's 200+ year balance team is gonna see how busted he is next patch, and gut all of his AP ratios or nerf him into nonexistence, like it happened with Zeri.
I fucking hate it when they give us cool champ concepts, only to make them busted by buffing some random aspect of their ratios and then making them virtually unplayable because of how incompetent they are at balancing the damn game.
Edit: to be clear, I love Smolder's concept and I am having a blast playing him mid. The thing is that Riot's balance team is trying to make him JUST go adc and not top or mid by nerfing his solo early game, and it's ended up in (yet again) a completely playable character mid, which might be even overtuned for next patch. Since Riot's balance team doesn't fucking know what they are doing, chances are Smolder's gonna end up gutted because they do NOT know what the fuck to do with him (again, like it happened to Zeri).

Id still go shadowflame cuz the true damage crit and by late game you still deal a decent amount of magic damage from items as well as stacks. Id also go lichbane for all the stats it gives plus a stronger q. To fit in armor pen youd need to drop something and i think it would be the riftmaker.

Building ap items on smolder increases his damage but it is still physical damage so magic pen does nothing
That's only half true. All of his abilities deal bonus magic damage based on his passive stacks. The base ability damage is physical, but he does bonus magic damage on all three basic abilities. He's kind of like Kai`Sa in that regard, where it's a pretty even mix of damage types.@@greatgatorgaming6024

This champion is in shambles from the beginning... no wonder Riot fired the guy who designed him.. I mean he probably knew what was coming and decided to troll a bit before being let go. Just look at his scalings, look at his dmg?? Does that look like an adc to you? Something even funnier- have you noticed the absurd names of his spells? Pekin and me: Pretty sure W does more damage to champions now if you hit multiple champions in a cluster.
They also just straight up buffed AD scaling on it to disincentivize the liandry's builds.
The reduced initial damage on W is also a straight up buff because it prevents W from oneshotting the wave, so you don't miss stacks just for pushing. People are like "ERMAGERD WAVECLEAR NERF" but it's legitimately a straight up buff to W Q stacking.
They also straight up buffed Q projectile scaling.
A lot of people are just reading the "Doran's Ring level 1 W does less damage to the wave" part of the change and freaking out over it.
mmm, idk, if whats needed to be viable is 1 dc on the enemy team, and long fights where all your team has to help u get W's, and then going like 15 kills in... idk man xd
other champs can carry harder by themselves, just saying, your Q was miserable almost all game long xd, ure like a worst AP Kogmaw, at least he can use Q and W, and E succesfully beside with full ap.
