This song brings me so much mixed emotions. I am a Katrina survivor and I remember hearing this song in Lafayette, Louisiana shortly after being rescued from downtown New Orleans. It will always keep my city in my heart.
Saw her with my late gf several times, including opening for Ray Charles. A year before she passed, we saw her at the Big Apple BBQ in NYC. My gf, who was basically wheelchair bound by that time, and I were walking behind the stage and we saw her talking to someone, she stopped to talk to her for about 15 minutes. I’ll never forget that.
I've seen her several times. She's from Vinton LA which was devastated by hurricane Laura along with the neighboring city of orange TX. My heart and prayers goes out to her and her loved ones. This song has even more meaning now.
Saw her warming up for Johnny Winter at the Continental early 80 s. Fast forward to 2015, Marble Falls, tiny downtown theatre... My God! Thank You Ms Ball. I love you, Ma'am. I've heard Angels, Lord. God Bless you.
I still can't listen to this without going back to the Rhythm and Roots Festival a few days after Katrina, which forced a few musicians to miss the gig. Marcia did this one to a silent audience all choked up and showing it. Tore me up...

Marcia Ball's vocals capture this song like no other version I've yet to hear. 👏🏽👏🏽💞
Aaron Neville the best
