The fact that both handles are hollow makes me think it would be really cool if someone made a cap for both ends so you can fill both handles with survival gear. Fishing hooks, Cordage and such.
It looks well thought out, balancing the tradeoffs well in weight, handle length, and profile. It's a jack off all trades axe. I think the market for it is small, but sometimes people buy gear just because of the cool factor. I think it's best use case is a longer canoe trip, like the stuff that Jim Baird does.
Many moons ago this was the first bushcraft channel I watched. Long before any others existed and yet I never see your videos circulating. Now that I’m back I have to say I am very sorry TH-cam does this too such a great channel. Hang in there as you always have been!
Good review Joe. I like this. My suggestion for the handle tool would be to simply put a velcro closure tab over the little pouch. This is a perfect companion for the Boreal bow saws.
Great review on the axe. I don’t know if I would use it as a primary tool but this would be something I could keep infer the seat of my truck…. I loved the comment about bushcraft and losing your fire steel.. those that know…know. It broke my heart to watch that on the show. Great to see the content coming..
May as well add dry storage in the bottom of the handle.. for fish hooks, line, fire starter. Definitely multipurpose the tool for the release. Great potential and like you said.. it has a place. Very best 🍻

I’m an arborist, and I can tell you with 100% certainty, that Silky, and Agawa are not the only 2 saws worth a damn. I use a Tsurugi and a Zubat every single day, and a Stanley pruning saw cuts just as good, and holds an edge just as well. Jameson also makes an excellent saw, plus get this, it won’t cost the entire price of the saw for a replacement blade.. crazy right?
Great test and review of the axe. Love your honesty. I like the idea of putting a lanyard on that tool that comes with the axe. A magnet wouldn't hurt, but not a magnet alone. The difficulty of those latches is concerning. Looks like you had an enjoyable day. Great to see both Wolf and Beauty hanging out with you. Funny how you muscled breakfast into a burrito. Dave Canterbury is also doing a review on the ADK 26. It looks like a decent design but as you stated it could use something bright orange for visibilty,especially in the fall with heavy leaf cover. A way to afix the tool was also a valid point. I already own a Scandinavian and a small forest axe from Gransfors Bruks but i'll keep an eye on this one to see if Agawa improves on the design? It’s not going to replace my boys axe. It is not hard to carry a medium size axe in the woods. I feel like they’re trying to solve a problem that doesn’t really exist.
Joe's a very knowledgeable woodsman in his late 30's with steep history in bushcraft and a successful youtube channel. He's been on some trips that most of us could only dream of (and documented them beautifully). You're going to discredit his opinion because he isn't a big fat guy?
😂 I feel like it was more a playful jab at discrediting a little guys ability to weight test a load because hes not a big fat guy. As a tiny outdoor guy in his late 30's myself , I can see the humour in this. Agawa makes bar-none awesome saws, and if i was going to BUY a saw it'd be a boreal 21. But I enjoy making my saws in the field when I need them so that i only need to carry the blade itself. That's just my style. However I agree with what joe said about the takedown axe. I wouldn't carry this AXE simply cause its not my style, and not because its "not a cool axe/Hatchet combo with a slightly sub-par striker that you could possibly loose when the leather stretches or expands.......and is slightly too light for an axe, but understandably so". 😁 @alexroxhissox

Normally I would say gimmick but this one actually seems fully functional and durable. I agree that it looks like a top contender as far as 2-piece axes go but I don't think that I would ever own one. I'm not saying that I think it will fail but the possibility of it breaking would always be in the back of my mind. That being said, if I were ever stuck in the woods and this is the only tool for processing wood that I had available, I wouldn't be mad.

Interesting design! I still have doubts about long term durability. Plastics and polymers deteriorate with time, and if you leave them in a hot car, it greatly accelerates the process. If this is what I had to use, I would use it. I tend to prefer more traditional things.
Watching you feline that tree was making me wish you’d just pull out a machete and take a couple of swipes and that tree would’ve been cleaned. That axe looked to light for the big handle. It’s a good idea but it a hatchet more then an axe by the looks of it. It look nice in my truck. But I dunno my hatchets pretty perfect as is. And my silky works great. Hard to replace those things when there so perfect for my needs. I also have that folding saw but my silky is always the first thing I grab. But I think I’ll try and grab one of these for my nephews and see how they like it. Great video. I’ll try them out and see how that goes.
I bought my Boreal 21 saw because of you. I've been looking for a small camp axe, this one intrigues me. It might be better as a 20-22" axe with that head. Maybe after the kick starter and they've been on the market awhile they will add different sizes, like they did with the saw. Cheers Joe.
Not gonna lie, it looked like you were working a lot harder than you would with a normal axe. That said, it doesn’t look bad at all. On another note, a cat I recently rescued had a litter of kittens, and one of the kittens has face markings like a werewolf. So that kitten is now named Wulfie in solidarity with your dog.
There are a couple things that would keep me from buying it in it's current design. That little key to take it apart has to go, it would be lost before I even used it the 1st time..and how do you change out the handle if it breaks, It looks like the handle is formed around the axe head. And those wire latches need to be protected or designed different..if I swing wild and hit those latches I'm going to destroy those things making it useless. All things I can avoid by using traditional axe and hatchet.
So, a little heavy for hatchet mode, A little light for two handed mode. I guess that would be an optimal balance of weight. Maybe you could add one of those ankle weights (or something similar) to give it more weight for the two handed mode. Great review. Thanks

Neat design but I’m still sold. Good review too. Even if I was sold on it, wouldn’t know what to do with my fiskars axe. Until something brakes (highly unlikely), I still would buy a one piece axe though.
I bought the AGAWA BOREAL21. So far has been a great saw. But for right now. I wasn't really impressed with this axe. While I'm sure they're trying their best. I might just wait for 2.0 to come out. It's usually the best thing to do.
You can tell he’s had dogs for awhile based on how he gets them out of the camera. He lets them to say “I love you” then throws them out of the way 😂 As someone with four dogs, this is constantly happening.
To me, the ADK26 seeks to solve a problem that not a lot of people are dealing with. Is there a common scenario where a person would need both a hatchet and an axe if they have a solid grasp on the fundamentals of outdoorsmanship/bushcraft? The KS page lists a $229CAD price tag. That's a hefty fee for what is essentially a cumbersome hatchet with a handle extension.

It is an interesting idea, but I don't see myself needing/wanting a 14" hatchet with a 1.75lb head, or a two-piece 26" axe with a 1.75lb head. the first being too heavy and the latter too light. The plastic handle and the gadget to break down the axe would just not work for me. I do love my Boreal saws though and Agawa nailed it with those.
I don't know Joe, but I think I will just keep carrying my CT Woodcraft Packaxe with the 28" handle that I put on it. Love my Agawa saw of course but this just feels like an expensive and somewhat gimmicky Fiskars for now.
Man where can I get one of those axes. From myself I use the Tormek T8 knife sharpener so to get the right even parallel angel throughout the edge of the ax.
joe, if you had placed the wood on something solid when chopping, you would have been much more efficient, chopped through the wood faster, and saved lot of energy. also, that is why you thought the head should be heavier, because the wood you were chopping was bouncing all over the place.

If it gets lost, you can always shape a bit of wood with the axe to act as your lever tool.

I wish they made a 2 piece full felling axe, just for the compactness for travel, it would be amazing, i dont have need for a 2 piece hatchet..
Nobody else needs to sell it. Nobody else abuses an Agawa bowsaw like Joe, and they keep going like an energizer bunny,,,

What about a secure detachable weight to the head? Some sort of rail mount or slot with magnet under the hammer.

All you need a 90 degree edge on one edge the striker, the same flat surface as you'd have on the spine of a knive.
Can't see me swapping my Wetterlings/Agawa combo for this, but I can't say it looks bad.

When making a video like this, I think it is a good idea to state in no uncertain terms weather it is sponsored or not. I asume this is not sponsored since you do not say so and you are an honoburu guy but bad actors might jump on it and, yeah its just good practice.
