It also adds scent. That’s also what I look at. Sight, sound, scent. That’s how the fish can find your bait. Now that I seen you also use it. I feel like I was on the right track all this time. Why I look at trailer keepers and their style when I’m looking at baits I buy. A wire style is still my favorite. But not all are created equal. Thanks Matt for making me aware of the bulk part for the fish to inhale. That never occurred to me. Great information.
Excellent explanation. I never use a trailer hook because I want the weedlessness of the spinnerbait more then anything. I have used a bunch of different trailers and will have to try this out for sure. Thanks for all the great videos and tips.

Very nice tip, was trying to figure out a good trailer to put on my spinner baits this year, newish to spinner baits and never really had a trailer in them and this is a nice subtle change
Hey Matt, I really like the comment you made towards the end of the video about not using a trailer hook. My dad was making spinnerbaits back in the 60s before I was born, so I literally have been making them my whole life....most kids got toys, I got fishing lures. I have never used or needed to use trailer hooks ever..... common denominator of the need for a trailer hook is point blank, something is wrong with your bait......I have heard so many people have this debate and I laugh every time because usually they tie on some sort of a willow leaf shad pattern bait and never change it trip after trip after trip until it breaks or they lose it.....if it doesn't work today or they miss fish on it they never adjust and just use a different bait.......a closed mind equals a rod that rarely bends. Your work bench looks like mine. I appreciate and can relate to the hours you put in to all the Tweeks on your baits and techniques......keep them coming

Hank used to use a very similar trailer. For a period of time. I did not use those trailers. I do recall maybe I didn't catch as many fish. Although I always ran a cheater hook whenever possible on my spinnerbaits taking that lesson from KVD. I started using those trailers again. I agree about the boottail trailers and such. I’ve used grub and boot tail trailers from time to time but always felt it hurt the bite. I abandoned them and have run bare. I went thru my Senco’s and found some white ones and am going to add them to my white spinner baits and see how it works out with the other tip you had about pumping the rod. Truth be told I have caught way more Pike than Bass on spinnerbaits. Hopefully I can turn this the other way! Thanks for the tip!
@@MattStefanFishing I know this is hard to believe, but I was organizing tackle today and found a pack of those Zoom White Split Tail trailers. I put them in a box for ice out pike, but might have to rethink that.
Wow! Pretty enlightening video. I used to always throw spinnerbaits with trailers and trailer hooks, then over the years noticed that I almost always caught them on the main hook while the trailer hook gaffed the fish on the side. So in the last 3-4 years I've stopped using trailer hooks and actually think I catch more fish now, and they hammer it. I sometimes use an Uncle Rob's trailer, and sometimes nothing. I'm not sure if I catch more or less with or without, but I do like the subtle look of that senko tip. I like the bulk it gives, and might even go a little shorter. Thanks for all the tips you provide us, very intuitive. Hey, you probably should have named your program that.
Awesome video man! I've never thought of it that way, I always used old used up trick worms and split the tail on spinnerbaits and bladed jigs... I guess I was trying to go for a bigger profile and never really thought of it like that, thanks Matt that's pretty cool!
Good idea. I've started experimenting with trailers on spinnerbaits and am looking for the right one. I understand and agree with your reasoning about adding bulk. Wouldn't a little action from a trailer be a potential benefit if it didn't interfere with the blades or skirt? Seems like the Zoom Split Tail Trailers would be ideal. I think lots of people trim up their skirts a bit and the action of the trailer is farther behind the skirt.
I wonder if you could use the back end of a fluke, that way the trailer moves with the skirt when you pulse the rod and it would also add that fish tail profile
That zoom trailer that you showed is one of my trailers & I like the fat Albert white or chartreuse in both trailers, but that half general I can see how it would work also, I think also the same trailers would be great for chatter baits, I'm learning a lot about this, I've been wanting my chatter bait to run deeper & I figured by using these small worm like trailers & lighter line I should get the bait to run deeper, but I won't be able to go fishing for at 2 months cause I broke my left wrist, bummer!
Congrats with your association with TW, it’s been a lot of fun watching your channel grow 👏 It makes a lot of sense about the bulk of the Spinnerbait great info! A very versatile trailer is the Hog Farmer Spunk Shad. Cut the Spunk Shad so it is just a little longer than the skirt. You can take a Sharpie and add a splash of red or chartreuse 🤫
This is really interesting. You don’t use boot tails and hear I am running spinnerbaits with ONLY a swimbait and no skirt. Or a Shad color curly tail grub with a red fish jig spinner attached, like a scaled up beetle spin. Sounds crazy but I caught so many 4-5s out of our 7 acre pond as a kid on them that I’ve started using it again, and it definitely catches numbers. Awesome video, definitely going to try this on my standard spinnerbaits
I’ve used them (zoom trailers) for over 35 years. That’s been my secret for years. Matter of fact I just got through ordering 15-3/8 oz. Hank Parker spinner baits for my backup supply and they come with a harder version of that trailer. Maybe all my fishing buddies won’t see this video with my secret weapon. Lol. He. He. Ha. Thanks man. Great video. Can’t wait to try your secret hair jig presentation. Mike V.
IF I even use a trailer, it is usually a blue glimmer white split tail. best I have found in SW OHIO area-- salted one from zoom or bass pro house brand
Matt if I may add this to the split tail I have left over what they call Dardanelle yellow special and out of the white. I added them to contrast skirts or match skirts. But here is the main reason the split tail is better is when you add a floating trailer hook. By that I mean and maybe you can show this is the trailer hook has a big eyelet to slide over the barb and then a using the rubber band that they use for skirts and put it on and this allows for a floating trailer hook that doesn't snag and I use them 95% of the time. Also adds bulk as you said and helps keep spinner bait up in weeds a little better.
@Matt Stefan Fishing no you know what's very cool you doing that video building my spinning rod for St.Lawrence and sending me a bill... not that's cool
I've tried to tell this to folks for decades. A bass' strike is comparable to a vacuum trying to suck up a drill bit vs. a ping pong ball. I super glue used tube lures matching the skirt color onto my spinnerbaits.
The only thing those old trailers were good for was adding a different color to your spinnerbait. I use to dye them red because I could never find red. But the bulk does make some sense, had never thought about it though.
I use trailers but I always assumed the issue was that when they get up close to a spinnerbait- there's nothing that really looks like a minnow there to hit. So, I think a lot of the time they hit the blades- that's what attracted them and it's the closest thing to a minnow when they get there to actually hit. But if you add a trailer- now there's a target that looks like something to eat- so they hit it. Probably not right- probably the suction thing like you pointed out but- either way, they work.
Hey Matt, another great tip, will definitely give it a try! I was wondering what blank you prefer for open water spinnerbaiting? I just finished up building the CB 906. I feel that rod would be to long for close contact spinnerbaiting, around trees, etc, but how would it be for open water spinnerbaiting? Thanks!
Enjoy the video? You just made my day with that solid and believable information. Thank you again! Are you sure you aren't using that Maxscent aroma to increase your hook-up to boat landing ratio? lol
The split tail trailer is my number one trailer I use on all my spinnerbates, buzz Bates, And vibrating jigs. I never have to use a trailer hook.. I don't like the long strands of skirt on my Baits.. I will also use a color which offsets some of the color in my spinnerbait skirts To give the Bates more attraction. There is a color in between the white and yellow that I use the most. It is lime colored.. If it's not broke don't fix it.
That's great info and assume it applies to chatterbait too. I like to prerig my tackle with trailers like above mentioned and jigs. The 2 I don't prerig are Maxscent and Zman. Elaztech doesn't playwell in the tacklebox and I'm afraid the maxscent will dry out. Do u prerig ur maxscent or have same concern?
The plastic chunk or small stick worm on the spinnerbait allows the bass to inhale the bait with ease versus not allowing the bass to inhale a broken up skirt. Vacuum effort. Try vacuuming a ball full of holes then vacuum up a ball that is solid. The one with holes is harder to pick up with the vacuum. The solid one is picked up with ease. This vacuum effect is what the bass are doing when they hit the spinnerbait or buzzbait!
Hello this is off topic of this video but I was really interested in if you could make a video of drag settings four different techniques. No one seems to make videos about that the only time you hear about drag is when flipping and pitching everybody seems the lock their drag down other than that you don't hear much about how for what is the proper tension setting on certain types of techniques
So Matt, blade colors? Willow leafs, primarily, how often do have the larger blade be a silver blade. For me, I have a hard time using silver on top. Gold just looks the best- to me! I’m not a fish but gold is my go to as the larger blade. Thought? Thanks. Great stuff.
I like to experiment alot but I probably run a powerbait grub or zoom fat Albert 90% of the time as a trailer on spinnrbaits and on swimjigs too. I like being able to mix and make more complex colors by adding a trailer, I rarely match color of bait and trailer exact. Also scent if I'm running Berkeley grubs which I prefer. Deffinatly going to try what you talked about this spring though too, and it'll be nice to have a use for my trailer even after it gets its tail bit off haha also ive never used one of those actual split tail spinnerbait trailers for the same reasons you mentioned, but I might have to pick up a pack if I see them somewhere now.
Makes a lot of sense. What do you think about JUST using a "trailer" on a spinnerbait without a skirt, and if you do this what kind of success do you have? I've used old spinnerbaits that have lost their skirts, with nothing but an attached chunk of plastic (curly tail, creature, etc.), and have had good success with it.
@@MattStefanFishing Now that you mention it, yes, I do recall you did do video on that! Sorry, you've got so many videos I just forgot. Thumbs up, Matt!
Try the original floating worm come up from the tail cut it thread it on it does not drag but it wiggles on the back it does not create no drag like a boot or a big paddle tail worm , it has a baby paddle tail that wiggles so good , it does not flap and it’s skinny , I cut mine about 4 inch long I let mine hang off behind the hook a good bit past where the skirt falls , and you will not feel it on your spinnerbait , it feels like nothing is on it
Bravo Matt. The most common sense tip on spinnerbaits I ever heard!

If it's not broke don't fix it.
its a good one!
Do u prerig ur maxscent or have same concern?
i hold off on rigging them until im in the boat for the same reasons
Good one bro , loved it
Glad to hear that
The plastic chunk or small stick worm on the spinnerbait allows the bass to inhale the bait with ease versus not allowing the bass to inhale a broken up skirt. Vacuum effort. Try vacuuming a ball full of holes then vacuum up a ball that is solid. The one with holes is harder to pick up with the vacuum. The solid one is picked up with ease. This vacuum effect is what the bass are doing when they hit the spinnerbait or buzzbait!
thats a great analogy thanks for sharing!
Two things, do you use on both colorado and willow blades and do you use colors close to the color of the spinner?
I generally try to pick a color that matches and will use regardless of blade types
Hello this is off topic of this video but I was really interested in if you could make a video of drag settings four different techniques. No one seems to make videos about that the only time you hear about drag is when flipping and pitching everybody seems the lock their drag down other than that you don't hear much about how for what is the proper tension setting on certain types of techniques
good suggestion! THanks!
Awesome great tip good to know thanks 🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘
You bet!
So Matt, blade colors? Willow leafs, primarily, how often do have the larger blade be a silver blade. For me, I have a hard time using silver on top. Gold just looks the best- to me! I’m not a fish but gold is my go to as the larger blade. Thought?
Thanks. Great stuff.
i honestly prefer double silver, but do mix it up. If im in Florida i really prefer double gold.
Deffinatly going to try what you talked about this spring though too, and it'll be nice to have a use for my trailer even after it gets its tail bit off haha also ive never used one of those actual split tail spinnerbait trailers for the same reasons you mentioned, but I might have to pick up a pack if I see them somewhere now.
thanks for sharing!
I'll say to that's a perfect trailer to for that war eagle cuz of the way the hooks are I'll have to pick a pack up cuz I love a war eagle
thanks for watching
Makes a lot of sense. What do you think about JUST using a "trailer" on a spinnerbait without a skirt, and if you do this what kind of success do you have? I've used old spinnerbaits that have lost their skirts, with nothing but an attached chunk of plastic (curly tail, creature, etc.), and have had good success with it.
i like swimbaits without the skirt. Ive done videos on that.
@@MattStefanFishing Now that you mention it, yes, I do recall you did do video on that! Sorry, you've got so many videos I just forgot. Thumbs up, Matt!
Q: Does the same reasoning apply to jigs? Should I use short stubs in jigs, too?
generally you already have a trailer of some sort on a jig so no reason to do it
Hey Matt I get my swimjigs to "walk" when I use that trailer
awesome!
Try the original floating worm come up from the tail cut it thread it on it does not drag but it wiggles on the back it does not create no drag like a boot or a big paddle tail worm , it has a baby paddle tail that wiggles so good , it does not flap and it’s skinny , I cut mine about 4 inch long I let mine hang off behind the hook a good bit past where the skirt falls , and you will not feel it on your spinnerbait , it feels like nothing is on it
very cool tip! Thanks for sharing!
Thanks for the great tip!!!!!👊🏻 Makes a lot of sense to me. Bulk it up!!!!!! Stay Safe & God Bless!!!
Right on
