Wonderful, - are they (all) carved by St Luke? Is that possible? How did they get around all of Europe?

No, not all are carved by St Luke, there are many legends and folk lores surrounding these Madonnas. It is interesting that no artist is associated with them, and if there is, it is attributed to St Luke. The symbolism is interesting, and that is what I personally focus upon. The images came to Europe through many streams, some were brought by Coptic Monks from North Africa, some in the hands of the Templars and Crusaders, others came through the Byzantine Court and were circulated through royal families as gifts, wedding presents and such for noble and royal families, others came with clergy, were gifted through popes, monastic orders and such.
