    **RECIPE FOR COCONUT MACAROONS**
    1 14 oz bag sweetened, shredded coconut
    1 14 oz can sweetened, condensed milk
    2 egg whites
    vanilla
    salt
    Heat the oven to 325ºF (160ºC). Mix the coconut and the milk in a big bowl, along with a big splash of vanilla and a pinch of salt. Beat the egg whites to stiff peaks, and fold them into the coconut mixture. Shape the coconut into little balls and bake them until just golden around the edges - about 30 min. If you want, melt some chocolate in the microwave and dip the macaroons in it (or drizzle the chocolate over) and cool until the chocolate is firm. It helps to just barely melt the chocolate, to not mess up its tempering.

    There's a general pattern that when French "-on" words passed into English they were basically left intact except for turning into "-oon" :
    - ponton -> pontoon
    - ballon -> balloon
    - dragon -> dragoon
    - salon -> saloon
    - bouffon -> buffoon
    - peloton -> platoon
    - harpon -> harpoon
    Etc. Macaroon clearly belongs to that list, and became what it is through the same linguistic phenomenon.

When we describe people as abrasive we tend to mean that manners don't meet our expectations of polite behaviour. Otherwise it can be used to mean that someone is unsociable and aggressive. How is that Adam Ragusea??? And if someone liked Adam Ragusea's video, how is calling his content abrasive a good way to recommend someone else's content?       Ah, the irony. I've always loved the coconut variety, from well before these french variety took off. Imagine my surprise on being served a desert devoid of coconut. It feels so recent. My only gripe with the french variety is how they have displaced the traditional (american) variety.

    Hey Adam! I am only 12 years old and I have always had a passion for cooking! I have been binging your videos recently and asked my parents if I could cook a chicken breast for myself. What I did was I used your 1 pan method . I added some fresh rosemary, a little incy bit of garlic, some Italian seasoning, and 2 table spoons of butter. Let all that butter melt stir it around with the seasoning, and add the chicken. I just let it brown the first side of the chicken breast. What I did next is when I had to flip it, I added some olive oil to kind of make it fry in the juice and butter. Later on when it almost finished, I added a pad of butter and some frozen peas. (unthawed straight from the freezer) Also added some salt and pepper. When all of it was done cooking, I finished off the chicken with some salt and pepper on the top and I was done. Just put it all on a plate and it was the best chicken breast I ever had. I really like the one pan method because the peas and everything else in the pan was able to absorb the juice from the chicken and tasted 10x better. I just wanted to tell you how much of an inspiration you have been to me!

    You see, the extra "o" in macaroon is subtle a hint to the fact that it contains cOconuts while the mac in macaron stands for mac and cheese, the secret ingredient that no chefs ever put in their videos but that I can guarantee makes a difference in the final product.

    In Sicilian, and other Southern Italian regions, from the same Latin verb comes "maccu" (mackoo), usually referring to mashed fava beans to the consistency of… you guessed it, a paste! Great interesting video!

    The etymology of macaroni being a paste is also the reason why you’ll see that on almost every box of dried pasta in American grocery stores the label “enriched macaroni product.” Pasta is actually just the feminine Italian word for dough, and has the same etymological root as our word “paste.” Just a fun fact I wanted to throw out there since you mentioned the etymology of macaron!

    Interesting to know: in Germany we have a kinda traditional Christmas pastry called Haselnuss Makronen - hazelnut macaro(o)ns in English.

      Yeah "macaron" word use is pretty weird in Europe. In most Slavic and post-Soviet countries people will basically call any type of Italian pasta "macaron". Unlike Italy (and the U.S,), where macaroni specifically refers to the tubed ones.

    Thank you for clearing this up. As someone over age 15, I was calling everything a macaroon until about 5 years ago when I started feeling very confused about the pronunciation. At some point I just started slurring out something that starts with an "M" and hoping for the best.

    I'm Persian, I believe you mean لوز Lovuez. My old man has a Ph.D in Persian literature he says the word Lovuez لوز and lozenge لوزی (Diamond the shape) are similar because they are from same root. Also they are Arabic words.

    French is my first language. You know these round pin badge? They are called "épinglette" in french, but we also call them "macaron" (don't know if it's only where I come from or globally accepted). So I always thought that they named the dessert "macaron" because they look like these Haha.

    Technically Katana (刀) just means sword, while Nihon-to (日本刀) means "Japanese sword." Thus, "Japanese katana" actually does make sense to say and isn't redundant, it's just a little strange.

    Great information, I've been wondering about that - and also explains the connection to another type of almond cookie that we call "makron" in Denmark (the coconut version we literally just call kokosmakron, with "kokos" referring to coconut). It's a somewhat sticky but excessively crunchy cookie that we use in a variety of things, but is obviously not originating here at all.

    Macaroons are actually called "Besitos de Coco" in Puerto Rico. Which would literally transalte into "Coconut Kisses". Up until now I thought they were a traditional dessert that was original to us. Recipes can vary a bit to the one in this video, some have condensed milk other don't.

    fun fact: the word "maccheroni" in Italian can refer to multiple things: tube shaped pasta (not the American macaroni, those are called tubetti) which is sort of a longer, thinner, slightly curved smooth version of rigatoni. We don't actually eat them that often, it's more of a regional thing from parts of central Italy. I'm from Lombardy and I don't think I've ever had them. A more common modern usage of the word "maccheroni" in some regional varieties of Italian is as an alternative word for spaghetti. There's even "maccheroni/spaghetti alla chitarra" from Abruzzo, which is handmade spaghetti, made either with egg or semolina dough, which is spaghetti that are cut from a piece of dough by using a tool made with old guitar strings. There's even "maccheroni dolci" from Umbria which is a "sweet pasta" dish made with various types of long pasta covered in breadcrumbs, cocoa powder, sugar, alchermes liquor and lemon zest, chilled up in a tray and cut up like a cake
    So yeah, I don't know exactly why macaroni means what it means in English, but people in Italy are always confused when they learn about that

      In Finnish the short curved tube pasta is callen "makarooni". Because Finnish nouns always end in a vocal (or -s) the word for macroon is "makarooni". Welcome to the confusion. Or not as one is sold on your dry pasta isle and the other on the baked goods.

    In Polish, we got "makaron", which is (of course) pasta. We got it from Italy, as many other culinary things.
    We also have a word "pasta", but that is translated to English as "paste".
    Terribly confusing when you are learning English as a little kid.

    In my home toungue the two are named remarkably differently, and so I never even thought about them possibly being the same thing.
    The macaron is simply a macaron (not to be confused with the French president Macron) and the coconut one is a "kokosmakroon", with "kokos" being our translation of coconut when used in conjunction with another part of a word.

    From where I'm from "macaroni" takes the more vague meaning of "pasta".
    It gets really confusing if you try to explain to people that you're making "Mac n cheese" and not pasta with cheese

    In Brazilian Portuguese, we call pasta 🍝 “macarrão”. In fact, every single time I’ve said macaron to an older person they mistook it for macarrão (the ão is nasal, more similar “ung-oong”, and the double R sounds more like an H, kind of like the French pronunciation, so it sounds very very close).

    Fun side note: The Turkish word for pasta, "makarna", also comes from the Italian word 'maccheroni' and we also call macarons "makaron".
    They're eventually like the words 'castle' and 'chateau' in English --they originally come from the same word; they just entered the language in different times and mean slightly different things

      in german we use schloss & burg, but they also were synomyns some time in the past. schloss is usually a chateau, palace (or castle) while burg is usually a castle, ein chateau is a chateau and ein palast is a palace, ein Herrenhaus is a mansion or maybe a chateau or a castle :D

    Nice video. I always wondered why both types of macaroons were called the same thing when they're very different cookies in texture and taste. I grew up on the coconut ones, but prefer the almond ones. I always just assumed that they just happened to be named the same thing. I'm glad I watched this.

    one minor thing: the matzoh is not "there was not time for the bread to rise because they were in too much of a rush"
    they were told a week in advance that they were leaving, and that they would be eating unleavened bread when they left.
    (I wonder, was it perhaps a matter of it being more portable? given that it is basically a cracker (or as my tastebuds often compare it too when I am in a grumpy mood during passover, stale cardboard), it is definitely more stable and lasts a lot longer than any other bread I can think of (I don't think matzoh ever goes stale... and if it did, I don't think I would notice the difference...). I suppose that would make it a better sort of bread to be taking with you when packing up and leaving on foot with chariots in pursuit... never mind for having available once you have moved into the sinai desert and gotten lost or something (it took them 40 years to make a journey that probably could have been made in 3 days...): when you don't really have any means of protecting your bread from the elements, it is probably helpful to have a sort of bread that doesn't need to be protected as much...
