  • A step by step guide for how you can build your credit using a credit card. A lot of people get confused by how credit cards can actually help them improve their credit and the best way to use them to improve their credit profile.
    Some of the things I will talk about may seem very obvious but in this video I also go through some very in-depth explanations of how credit card companies assess customers and why you need to do certain things with your credit card in order to make the best impact on your credit profile.
    Watch for full details on how to get the right credit card, what to do with the card once you got it, exactly how to optimise your use to improve your credit and some tips on how long it may take to improve your credit by using a credit card.

    I had my second chance with a Vanquis card at 59.9% in November after racking up alot of bad markers. Two months later I was approved for a Capital One at 34.9% so a drop of over 25%. Now pre approved for a new 27.4% card so i must be doing something right with my rising credit score. I have learned much from these videos and progressing toward a clean and serene credit file

    Sasha I've watched so many of your videos now, over a few years. When I began I had a "poor then fair" credit rating with Experian, the number's not even worth mentioning. I have taken onboard much of what you have taught me (less about the score, more about healthy credit use over time), and implemented it all over a period of time. I now have a credit score of 967 with Experian and have been offered better APR's on finance products. Thank you so much for your solid and professional advice. Respect brother Sasha you're appreciated. 🙏🏿
    P.s the quality of your videos are now much better, we noticed. 🤣

      I've just applied for a credit card (AQUA as i have a bad score). If the balance is 0 and limit at 450, if i buy something for 200 which makes my outstanding balance for 200. What happens there? Do I pay monthly towards the cost and will that improve my score? I'm really confused.

    • @bearnecessiteespolio5359
      @bearnecessiteespolio5359 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@patriox6151the simplest way the explain the most important thing is this; you pay the borrowing (aka the balance) down to nothing every month.
      So in your example you pay back that £200, to bring your balance to zero.
      It can get quite confusing, so the simplest way to do it, is just make sure you setup a monthly direct debit with the credit card company that pays the balance in full. Then you don't need to do anything, ever.
      Except spend £50-£200 ISH in each month. And make sure you e got that cash in your normal account on the direct debit date each month.
      This all just means you are proving to future lenders that you can reliably borrow a bit, and pay it back each month for years.

    Hi Sasha, thanks for pulling these videos together, the topic is extremely important and yet never taught. I'm still a little confused with the term "pay in full". Can I get some clarity on whether this means to pay the 'statement balance' in full (by direct debit for example) or to pay the current balance which often in my case is higher than the statement balance as I will spend throughout the billing cycle etc. Keep up the great work, thanks!

    • @SashaYanshin
      @SashaYanshin  2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    A very useful video Sasha. Would you consider a video on the number of credit cards you should have? How often you should use each card? How many is too many? Do you close unused cards or is this not a good idea? How often should you use each card? etc etc. I currently have 4 and use my Amex Cashback card more than the others e.g. Tesco Credit Card as the rewards are better, I occasionally pay for an online purchase every few months just to keep the card active - should I add maybe a monthly subscription to the Tesco card in order to show a more regular use pattern! Questions questions I know but your advice and guidance is appreciated.

    Even I can clear my balance in one go, I generally just pay a portion of my oustanding balance once a week to spread it over the 30 day period.
    I have that flexibility with a credit card as oppose to a debit card.
    If it's a big purchase then I just do a balance transfer to another card that offers 0% for like 20 months or something and set up a direct debit to deal with that payment.
    That arranagement has worked fine for me for many years now. My primay reason for using credit cards is purely cashbacks and rewards, otherwise I would'nt need to use them much

For example, if I have a credit limit of £100 and I spent £30 on my credit today and pay the whole £30 off a few days later. Then I go ahead and spend another £30 a few days later within the same month before I receive my statement date will this be considered at a 30% or 60% utilisation at the statement date? I hope this makes sense. Look forward to hearing from you.

    Question: when the direct debit is set up should it come out on the actual due date? If so wouldn’t it take 3 days to clear so it would be a missed payment or does it get cleared on the same day?

    • @SashaYanshin
      @SashaYanshin  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You don't get to choose which date it's taken on - with a Direct Debit the company does that for you automatically.
      And with DDs, the settling/clearing period is essentially waived. As long as the transaction goes through, it counts. 👍

They have offered to increase my credit from £1500 - £2500, would i be wise to accept this (and therefore) decrease the amount the card is used to less tan 1/4 of the total?

    Hi Sasha, thanks for your video, I recently got my first credit card with my bank Nationwide (As there are no reward cards out there that offer enough for them to be worth it for me). They offered me a £5.5k credit limit for my first credit card! I'm unlikely to spend much more than 5% of this in a month - is this a bad thing (Credit underutilisation)?

    • @SashaYanshin
      @SashaYanshin  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It’s on the low side but with just one card and a high-ish limit it shouldn’t matter much.
      See if you can put all of your food spending, any bills and things like insurance payments on it. As long as you’re not spending more than you were and pay it off in full you shouldn’t have issues. 👍

  • @Luggruff

    One thing that is still confusing for me regarding credit utilization is: If I have a limit of $10.000, then I go and get a part payment through a store for $10.000 (many stores here offer part payments only through credit cards). Say I then choose to part pay for 10 months, so $1000 each month, and with my bank at least, the rest is not shown. It comes as a charge every month, for 10 months. The first payment, I pay $2000, and when I read my limit on the card, it will say $11000, and my balance will say -$1000. I can still only charge another $1000 on my card, since the company knows that I have $9000 that is _going to be charged._ Does this mean I have 90% utilization, which is bad, or does it mean that I have -10% utilization?

  • @bufordmaddogtannen

    The best thing about getting a credit card with a £250 credit limit is that when you look around your house you can shake your head wondering what that card is good for, when your mobile, game console, tablet, laptop, TV, computer monitor all cost more than what the lender is offering you. 🤑
    BTW, if you pay for gas / electricity quarterly your credit score will go up faster.

    How does overdraft help you build credit data? If you use it is that a negative or positive?

    • @SashaYanshin
      @SashaYanshin  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It submits monthly data to credit reference agencies - shows that you have a credit account that you do not miss payments on, do not go over the limit on and manage properly which are all positive signs. Not as good as a credit card as you'll not really have proper payment data or balance data but still better than nothing.

    Hi, I've just been approved a credit card for £1500 but not sure whether to take the whole lot or reduce it. Point being is that if I take the whole lot, I definitely wont be spending 30% of that limit each month as I'm currently saving for a house. If I reduce it to £1000, then I'll more or less be using 30% of the card each month. Question here I guess is, is it better to get the higher limit but underutilise the card or lower the credit limit but get a better utilisation per month?
    Thanks,
    Jon

    • @SashaYanshin
      @SashaYanshin  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hey Jon,
      On a £1,500 limit, I think you will be just fine personally - if you use it to pay for regular spend like food shopping, petrol, whatever else you normally use a card for every month, that should do it - you can also get a second cardholder account if you have a partner and they spend on a card too.
      Some utility providers allow payment by card although be careful not to set up a continuous payment authority if you don't want to do it.
      If you are planning to use it regularly and pay it off in full, I personally wouldn't worry too much on the exact % number - it's not like it is in the US where that is a very fixed factor. :)

      Much better to use your credit card for those - I have whole videos talking about this topic (some of my oldest ones - excuse the quality and delivery!) The credit card statement is a monthly thing that tells you how much you owe and when it's due.
      But if you tell them to pay it off in full (by direct debit) every month then you don't have to worry about trying to time your repayment perfectly, the direct debit just pays it perfectly on the day it's due automatically. Hey Sasha, when you set up a direct debit to clear the full amount, is this on your credit card account or current account? Also, does the direct debit adjust automatically to the amount spent (i.e. not like a gym membership £20 per month for example)?

    • @SashaYanshin

      You set up the direct debit with the credit card and they will then charge the bank account. The Direct Debit will automatically adjust - if you set it for the Full Amount, it will take the amount on your statement on the date when the DD comes out for example.

What is the most strategic way for this person to increase his creditworthiness to ensure he gets a competitive interest on the loan. Hypothetically speaking without knowing anything about the person - if they have average credit, the two things to do are: a) Pay down any outstanding debt as much as possible starting with the highest interest debt first until it's all gone (not including mortgage) and b) use 1 or 2 credit cards to pay for all normal spend and repay them in full by direct debit at the end of each month.
