Hi, I hope you can help me I have an assignment about this story The assignment is (The Black Cat assignment: In no more than two long paragraphs or three short ones (one page), discuss how the themes of superstition and violence affect the story.) So, What do you think? I'm collecting as many opinions as possible
Very well spotted , @Queen.c - and Mr Rinzler , was this a sort of nod to Alfred Hitchcock , sort of , the way he would appear briefly in all his work - it is a clever , and delightful , tribut to E A Poe . I have just been to your website , btw , and viewed your TH-cam trailer for All Up - it looks like you have written something special , and I will purchase a copy as soon as possible . Best Wishes to you , and thank you again . Grant Maclean .
This is my favorite work by E.A.P, I've studied it extensively and even got a little black kitten and named it Pluto. Well a week ago my house burned down and all of my animals died just like the story. One of my only possessions that survived was my E.A.P book. What a coincidence.
@@jwrinzler5770 yes , I would second that . I hope your life has been better since then , @unfrostedfortnite , and may your beloved animals rest in peace .
Anyone who read the book, did anyone notice how nonchalant the narrator was about his wife’s death? And why is she going with him to the basement? Was he aiming to kill her and the cat that night, but wanted to hit the cat first and the wife second, but maybe he ended up having to kill her first?
Poe's "Black Cat" shares certain similarities with Stevenson's "The Strange Story of Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde". Both stories revolve around a protagonist whose sanity and humanity is overcome by a dark, inner, beastial temptation to commit heinous acts . Alcohol releases the murderous brute in Poe's tale. A chemical concoction releases the brute in Stevenson's tale. These are tales of the horrors of substance abuse.
Edgar was very poor he is suffered from alcoholism and drug abuse this very clear in his story always around darkness , madness , death , unstable people ...... Edgar May god bless you my favorite novelist
What a vivid account of the story, especially because of the art work and the definitive style that also depicts the madness of the story and its primary character. The direction also was superb. I enjoyed it and will share it with friends alike.
I'm glad that this video is right below the audio book because I'm not a native English speaker and didn't understand some parts of the story because of the vocabulary seeing the animation really helped to fully understand the story thank you
To be honest, in the original story the main character mention that black cats are disguised witches, so I believe that these cats are so sort of a curse.
That's sorta scary But what's the most unnerving for me is the fact that the mad man looks like one of my favorite characteres from one of my favorite books. (Kaz Brekker, from Six of Crows)
Thank You! I have read the story 3 times, under analyzing it. Listened to an audio book and over analyzed it to the point of it not making sense at all. This is PERFECT!
😊 Having three gorgeous (although not black) cats 🐾 myself, it was quite painful to watch. 💔 Very fond of Poe since my youth, i've found this a great work of art. Respect! 👌
Everyone thinks he's so evil, but I relate to this character so greatly. I know it doesn't go too into his childhood.... but my gut instinct tells me we are... one in the same. And the way he speaks... a perfect man, but a broken man.
Man, this is a true masterpiece. Never seen such great voice work and animation capturing the true essence of Poe's story. Would it be...errr...too far fetched to ask you for more? 👉👈
After all he killed the first cat, then he try to killed the auther one, furthermore he killed his wife that he was love her .!😢💔 He Worth worse than that .
My teacher made my class read this but their was a detailed image of a cat hanging and it was quite disturbing i you if do a better job at not making it as disturbing I also love your art style it’s so cool :)
You left some of the story out. You left the part on how he finds the cat and talks to the landlord about buying the cat off of him and the landlord tells him that he's never seen the cat before.
Agree about the rushed quality; tried to slow it down here and there, but was told that festivals wouldn't accept animated shorts more than 10 minutes. But glad you liked it anyway!
What i don't seem to understand is how the author want us to view the source of the protagonist's madness. Was he always a psychotic deranged individual whose murder instinct and sway into alcohol got triggered by a cat? Or was he a normal individual victim of some sort of sorcery or bad luck from the first beast that turned his life into a vicious cycle... for if you noticed, the second animal also has a white mark around the neck similar to a rope tie and there is the incident where the author mentions (with witnesses) of the burnt house been intact only in one spot, on that spot was printed the image of the killed cat. So it cant be all in in his head, well i guess.
Okay, I'm gonna be frank. The art and voice are simply amazing. I need some help. I am a new teacher and I was a bit horrified by the part wherein the axe was buried in the brains and also the scene of the skeleton. I know it is the point to horrify the audience, but here is my question: Is it appropriate to show this to my students? I don't wanna scare them lol. Help s.v.p.
I'd say it depends on the grade, maybe it is more appropriate from 9th grade and beyond, but if it's in middle school I'd recommend the audiobook or have them read the story themselves so they know about the story but won't be scared by the visuals. Good luck!
also depends on the cultural and gender aspects. Maybe for students from some countries it's too gory and inapprpopriate. In my country girls tend to avoid watching horror films, for example. I would ask my students first and find out their preferences in terms of fiction and film genres. Anyway, as an authentic material it is a great animation, but not universal, so to speak. Btw, I'm a teacher too and I'm going to use this animation for my private lesson. Luckily, my student loves Edgar A. Poe and he is into all this spooky stuff 😄

Glad the cat survived at the end. it's a happy ending story.
Yes it is, at least sort of. One out of two and the villain is stopped!
Glad you watched till the end--yes, at least one cat is saved.
thanks for spoiling the ending. :( just kiddin

This is the most interesting summary of *the black cat*
Extremely atmospheric,surreal animation,so captivating..and wonderfully macabre.........!!!❤😊
As a lover of Poe's work, this was excellent
I've also been a fan of Poe since I was 13.

I'm very sorry to hear that. I hope things have improved since then.
@@Angie-dh5gr Actually, Pluto is the name of the God of the Underworld in Greek Mythology. Most people know him as Hades from Roman Mythology.

The aftermath perspective of the Black Cat done wonderfully! This was expressed so well, I think Poe would have loved it.
I really like the voice acting.

This is great. I’d run through all of Poe’s work in this format if I could. It’s not easy to do Poe justice, but you did a great job.

I simply find this to be deliciously wicked and brilliant
Many thanks for reviewing. Glad you found both of those qualities in our short.
That's sorta scary

Wonderful
I remember reading many stories long time ago, and now i searched every single one of them on TH-cam
A good cautionary tale against alcoholism.
Exactly.
You're missing the point if you think that's what TBC is about
I feel like this cat is a metaphor for like inner demons in a person
I can see why this was one of my favorite Poe stories now.
This is one of my favorite of Poe’s stories! Thank you!
Poor cats! That maniac deserves a lifetime of prison
Definitely. One of the reasons why we added coda at end of the one cat surviving and being taken home by policeman.
That's true; not to mention his wife...
No
Glad you liked it!
Brilliant. It had never occurred to me that he had buried the cat on purpose

If this was a series, I binge the heck out of it 👌
This was so good, this story chills me more than any of Poe's others and you really did it justice with this great animation!
As an owner of 4 black cats, maybe I shouldnt watch this.

This was an excellent interpretation to Poe's short story. I loved it!
Everyone thinks he's so evil, but I relate to this character so greatly. I know it doesn't go too into his childhood.... but my gut instinct tells me we are... one in the same.
And the way he speaks... a perfect man, but a broken man.
In other words, I disagree with the conclusion of this.
It's certainly open to interpretation.
J W Rinzler it sure is. This was well made though :) good work.
Wow, that’s quite a piece! While gory and dark for my usual taste, it’s very engaging and the art is brilliant! (Great job Greg!)
Greg Knight did a truly amazing job.

Amazing work!

I'm watching this for school because... I'm too lazy to read but this is low key interesting and I would watch this on my free time
well, be careful--this is an adaptation; it's not the same as Poe's short story in many respects.

I got mind blowing with this Masterpiece!
And if you think of it later the Son of Sam would say that the neighbors dog was the Devil talking to him to murder!😳

Poe leaves it up to the reader; my interpretation is that the cat, etc. is an excuse created by the murderer. But that's just my interpretation.
