No wonder why the 7800 was a failure. Most of these games were outdated by 1987-1990 standards, in terms of gameplay but also in terms of sound. Most of these games have really bad music, or no music at all!

I'm starting to see why Atari failed. This kind of console might have been okay in the early 1980s, but it wasn't going to fly in the late 1980s. This looks only marginally better than the 2600. It's hard to believe this launched the same year as the Master System... it makes the NES seem really good by comparison. What's even sadder is... Donkey Kong and Mario Bros. appear to be the best games on the console! I guess Nintendo didn't feel threatened enough to sabotage the Atari 7800 port to make the NES look good?

  • @scarosone14

Problem was Atari kept putting out the same games on every system they launched. Ms. Pac Man, Donkey Kong, Asteroids, Centipede, Dig Dug. There was nothing original for the system when it 1st launched. Later on games like Midnight Mutants, Ninja Golf, Scrapyard Dog came out but they weren't system sellers and it was too late by then.

It's obvious a lot of you aren't familiar with the 2600 if you think these graphics are only slightly better. Compare 2600 donkey Kong to the 7800. Or 2600 double dragon to this consoles. It was a large step up and a beast at displaying sprites. Truth is most of these games were either titles prepared for the original 1984 launch or games that were rushed out the door by an uncaring management team. Proof of what the 7800 was capable of can be seen in games like Rikki and Vikki, Knight Guy and many other homebrews that have been developed in recent years. Not to mention what the demo scene has done. Not saying that it's NES quality but it's better than people give it credit for.

Other than the fact there were so many terrible Atari games rushed out, with what seems like zero quality control, the sound was the major downfall (Of course remaking 50 different versions of already released 2600 games). They needed a new sound chip in the worst of ways. Sure, some games might have competed a bit in the graphics department at the time, the sound was straight out of the 2600. Had the sound evolved with the graphics for the 7800, its demise could have been pushed back a little.

Choplifter! NES version looks washed out and to pale! Now the NES does wonders with Donkey Kong but is missing the pie factory level! Double Dragon the 7800 stayed true to the arcade! and you can play 2 players at the same time! and up to 6 characters on screen at once! all moves are there at start! As is with the arcade! (Nes you can't do this do to its limitations!)! Kung fu master has better back ground and better color on 7800! Dig Doug on NES has off color again as in Ms pac also sky is black not blue ,better color on the 7800! Mario brothers on the 7800 is great Mario and Lu look more like Mario and Lu as far a aspect ratio is concerned! Out of the three at the time (7800,Master system and the NES) the 7800 was the more powerful machine! It had a better color palette no flicker and could put more sprites on the screen at once! It was also the oldest of the three. The unit was just not used to its fullest back then, but now days home brews have shown its true power! check out Pluto's Klax, and Sirius! these are home brews for the 7800 and are light years above anything else on the machine! The sad truth is that Atari at the time was more interested in the computer market, and spent as little as possible on the 7800. The reality was that the 7800 actually had the power to compete with not just the NES, but also the Master System. 7800 homebrews like Bentley Bear's Crystal Quest, Dragon's Havoc, and many others show that the 7800 actually had enough horse power to carry it just as far as the NES, if not further. Nintendo offered Atari a chance to produce the NES in the states & they declined. They said video games are over. NES became a big hit! In a panic Atari who had the 7800 in the back burner, but canceled it, quickly rushed the 7800 to market to compete with the NES. 7800 It flopped! My point is that the 7800 is not worthy of this plus system. The games feel rushed. They're bad. The fact the ad calls it "iconic" is insulting. The Atari 5200 should be getting an Atari 5200+ release before the 7800. It has better quality games and great arcade ports. Atari could also re-release the crappy controllers, but now have them work well. A chance to redeem the Atari 5200. I'm not happy how Atari keeps neglecting the Atari 5200. No, the Atari 400 mini is not worthy tribute of the 5200. I don't care if the hardware is the same. I grew up with the 5200. I'm nostalgic for it.

Doesn't suck as hard as the 5200 but it still kind of stinks! Maybe 8 to 12 titles ( 10?) worth playing. 🙄 Played the Shit out of Joust, RoboTron 2084, Galaga and both Pole Positions in the Arcade though ( Christ who hasn't right!) They're we're actually some better titles on the Atari ST and Atari XEGS!
