Hi! Andre Rieu spotted Amira from this audition and offered her his guidance. After training with him Amira performed this same song much better in his consert. After that Amira has had vocal coach. She does not perform all the time, her parents want her to have normal childhood and not strain her voice too much.

I would like to see more "Amira Willighagen" reactions from you: back then, in 2013, it was amazing what she did, without any professional education. But now, in 2019, Amira has a very good professionally trained voice , which is still growing because she is only 15 years young. Some people say that she is allready the best soprano on the planet. I don't know that, but anyway: Amira is a top-class singer. She likes opera the most, but sings also cross-over music. What I think is interesting, is her development in just a few years. And to think that this passionate young lady is still improving, exites me how great she will be in the future.
It will be very interesting to see how you analyze Amira's performances (should you do so) which include many videos and cover five to six years (2013 to 2018). Might you wisely choose to make your selections from the earliest to the latest, in that order, to critique her vocal development all along the way. It’s not difficult if you’re a CHILD PRODIGY who has been born with a brain that is EXCEPTIONALLY ‘tuned’ to sound (memory & the repetition of sound, words, music 🎶 pitch, tone) Maybe one in a million born with this gift. Thank You! Right place to start! This was on August 31, 2013. The semi-final and the finals were in December; the "master class" with Andre Rieu occurred in London, in the meantime. For the semi-final, she sang the Bach/Gounod Ave Maria - and it's questionable whether there will ever be a better performance of it. There were pronunciation errors (naturally, she's Dutch, not Italian) and breathing errors in this audition, but the vibrato was already there, and the tone! And her intonation was good, too. She had asked her parents to go onto HGT at 7, but they said no, ask us when you're eight. She asked again when she was eight, and her mother said "when you are nine, the world will be at your feet" - and you have just seen the initial result. It gets better . . . At this point I do not think Amira had any professional training. Yet, Amira has a very professional sound. I can't wait until she matures to hear the difference. I can imagine that she only gets better with age, guidance and experience. I have listened to her latest performances and am already blown away. She will be big in this industry.
The cute factor goes out the window once Amira starts singing. Amira has had no voice coach and in some of the videos it is mentioned that she needs tuition which she gets before the semi-final and final. The difference in her voice between her initial audition and the final is incredible. Personally I think Amira's voice blows Jackie Avenko (Apologies if spelt incorrectly) and Charlotte Church out the window. There are a couple of videos of Amira singing as she has grown and her voice is still amazing. There are two of her singing with partners which are well worth watching if you're a fan of hers.

Part of what Andre did as prep for this performance was to have a long discussion about the story behind the song and how it was expressed in the music. If you meant from life experience , then no . I would be very interested in your reaction to the performance with Andre Rieu, given it took place just 6 months after her audition just after Amira turned 10 and consisted of the entire piece and not just a redacted portion. Also, this performance was used as an example of creating resonance at the end of a study of his professional opera singers create resonance through the shaping of the mouth , lips, tongue etc. The author seemed quite taken by Amira's ability to do the same and discusses how she achieved this feat at such a young age and with such a small space.
The Honest Vocal Coach The New Foundry Studios : On TH-cam they have translated versions of the song. But let's assume she did not know what the song is about, many people don't. If she learned by watching others, she may have imitated what she saw (Evancho and others). And added her own interpretation. I didn't know the words when I first listened but by the music and the performers voice and body language you could have an idea of the theme. As well as the tone and quality of Amira's voice which is the main issue at hand.
You should watch her duet of “O Sole Mio” with Patrizio Somebody (sorry, can’t remember his surname, arggh!). This is probably my favorite of her performances that I’ve listened to. As a coach I would listen to sequential examples of the same song so you have it across all ages till now. Maybe the same with Evancho and others. I believe this is her first and signature performance and although people can critique the technique, pronunciation etc. Amira herself said most important at the time was the feeling and getting in to the song. Now she is strong and technically better, but if she can convey the feeling now as then it will appeal to a wider audience. She touches the heart and, to be honest with you, I cry a lot when listening to her songs. The craziest thing is that she hadn't any training. Very courageous to comment on that once-in-a-life-time voice... But cute is a bit off I think, purity of heart emanates; has nothing to do with age although youth seems to help a little bit. She touches on something long lost in most people, I mean centuries, not just decennia...
I still think you should track as many young singer of any genre for which videos are available. It would to point out changes in voice and technique over time. Jon Bon Jovi as an example, as he got older his voice and style totally changed , probably because he could no longer sing as he did at the outset. Also it would probably help your profession/job as well. As an aside, I think those who due to their fandom or personal likes or dislikes would give thumbs down , make cutting remarks or who shamelessly shill another artist are mean, malicious and without class (and probably ignorant). I also think people who overdo their praise and deify an artist are way overboard. Even something meant to be "sweet" can turn out to be wrong.

It's now July 2021 and Amira appears to be heading down the Classical Crossover road. She seems to be following the footsteps, as you point out, of such artists as Charlotte Church, Sarah Brightman, and Katherine Jenkins. Sadly, unless she changes course and pursues fully the rigors of operatic training, she will never attain the status or gain the ability of a Monserrat Cabballe, Maria Callas, or Beverly Sills. I think it's a real loss for the classical world, if things go the way I believe they will. In any case, it's totally up to her how she utilizes her gifts, be they academic, athletic, of vocal, and I wish her nothing but the best whatever path she takes.

And: always carrying her turtle 'Schildpaddie' with her! You will see that turtle in many video's (even on big stages) 😂

I will state that having a relative who can sing does not automatically transfer to child or grandchild. Her stated she and Amira's father admitted they knew little about it. They even told her it was up to her. People talk about "a gift from God", I disagree. True, she probably , from her family's history, had the tools /capability to learn... Maybe! She did not just walk up to the microphone and sing the way she does, their is proof in the videos. She probably started at late 6 or early 7 years. At first it was to participate because she wasn't satisfied not doing anything. And then because ,I think, her grandmother, mentioned she should be on TV. Amira. Worked on her own, with her brother Fincent, to learn how to achieve her ability. The fact she considered it fun made it easier of course. Her focus and determination is what I appreciate in addition to her voice/ music. I admire her for this and her mother confirmed it in the latest "Billboard" show. To say it is a gift from God is too easy and lessens Amira' s achievement and effort in my opinion, and opinions will vary. If Amira wishes to characterize her singing as a gift from the Almighty she can. But most of the credit is hers! Correct, she did not know at that time. But Andre Rieu explained it to her, so she did know at the Maastricht performance. The song comes from the opera "Gianni Schicchi" (Puccini), which is in fact a comic opera; and the heroine (Lauretta) was a 15 year old melodramatic brat trying ( and succeeding) to twist her father around her finger, into giving her the money to buy a wedding ring, so she could marry the scion of a family with which her own family was "at war". I think this may account for the smile on her face as she started singing in the Maastricht performance. These comments about the song being too mature for her seem to be from people who do not know the comic aspect of the opera.

At this point I do not think Amira had any professional training. Yet, Amira has a very professional sound. I can't wait until she matures to hear the difference. I can imagine that she only gets better with age, guidance and experience. I have listened to her latest performances and am already blown away. She will be big in this industry.
The cute factor goes out the window once Amira starts singing. Amira has had no voice coach and in some of the videos it is mentioned that she needs tuition which she gets before the semi-final and final. The difference in her voice between her initial audition and the final is incredible. Personally I think Amira's voice blows Jackie Avenko (Apologies if spelt incorrectly) and Charlotte Church out the window. There are a couple of videos of Amira singing as she has grown and her voice is still amazing. There are two of her singing with partners which are well worth watching if you're a fan of hers.

Part of what Andre did as prep for this performance was to have a long discussion about the story behind the song and how it was expressed in the music. If you meant from life experience , then no . I would be very interested in your reaction to the performance with Andre Rieu, given it took place just 6 months after her audition just after Amira turned 10 and consisted of the entire piece and not just a redacted portion.
Also, this performance was used as an example of creating resonance at the end of a study of his professional opera singers create resonance through the shaping of the mouth , lips, tongue etc. The author seemed quite taken by Amira's ability to do the same and discusses how she achieved this feat at such a young age and with such a small space.
The Honest Vocal Coach The New Foundry Studios : On TH-cam they have translated versions of the song. But let's assume she did not know what the song is about, many people don't. If she learned by watching others, she may have imitated what she saw (Evancho and others). And added her own interpretation. I didn't know the words when I first listened but by the music and the performers voice and body language you could have an idea of the theme. As well as the tone and quality of Amira's voice which is the main issue at hand.
You should watch her duet of “O Sole Mio” with Patrizio Somebody (sorry, can’t remember his surname, arggh!). This is probably my favorite of her performances that I’ve listened to. I’m wondering if you’ve ever listened to Laura Bretan, another young singer who was on America’s Got Talent two (?) years ago? Another amazing voice.

She gets her lungs from being a winning distance runner. She studied TV for two years before this; copied Maria Callas lips. Just graduated from high school in South Africa. Still running, won steeplechase recently.

Need to jump forward to see the performance with Andre Rieu. She was 10 years old, only after 7 months after she won HGT.
As a coach I would listen to sequential examples of the same song so you have it across all ages till now. Maybe the same with Evancho and others. I believe this is her first and signature performance and although people can critique the technique, pronunciation etc. Amira herself said most important at the time was the feeling and getting in to the song. Now she is strong and technically better, but if she can convey the feeling now as then it will appeal to a wider audience. Based on your profession, and thanks to video it is a rare opportunity to track these young Diva's from the beginning. To me that would be interesting. Never before possible. Thank you so much Vocal Coach for going back in time, where it all started for Amira. She's indeed a phenomenal singer, performing on big stages in the Netherlands and South Africa. She touches the heart and, to be honest with you, I cry a lot when listening to her songs. The craziest thing is that she hadn't any training. I still think you should track as many young singer of any genre for which videos are available.
It would to point out changes in voice and technique over time. Jon Bon Jovi as an example, as he got older his voice and style totally changed , probably because he could no longer sing as he did at the outset. Also it would probably help your profession/job as well.
As an aside, I think those who due to their fandom or personal likes or dislikes would give thumbs down , make cutting remarks or who shamelessly shill another artist are mean, malicious and without class (and probably ignorant). I also think people who overdo their praise and deify an artist are way overboard. Even something meant to be "sweet" can turn out to be wrong.

It's now July 2021 and Amira appears to be heading down the Classical Crossover road. She seems to be following the footsteps, as you point out, of such artists as Charlotte Church, Sarah Brightman, and Katherine Jenkins. Sadly, unless she changes course and pursues fully the rigors of operatic training, she will never attain the status or gain the ability of a Monserrat Cabballe, Maria Callas, or Beverly Sills. I think it's a real loss for the classical world, if things go the way I believe they will. In any case, it's totally up to her how she utilizes her gifts, be they academic, athletic, of vocal, and I wish her nothing but the best whatever path she takes.

It's a short 'behind the scenes' of Amira recording her first album in 2014. It begins with Amira discussing how she wants to sing 'Nella Fantasia' with her vocal coach (and she has a very clear opinion... 😃) But you also see her as a 9/10 Year old girl: just playing and having fun. And: always carrying her turtle 'Schildpaddie' with her! You will see that turtle in many video's (even on big stages) 😂

I will state that having a relative who can sing does not automatically transfer to child or grandchild. Her stated she and Amira's father admitted they knew little about it. They even told her it was up to her. People talk about "a gift from God", I disagree. True, she probably , from her family's history, had the tools /capability to learn... Maybe! She did not just walk up to the microphone and sing the way she does, their is proof in the videos. She probably started at late 6 or early 7 years. At first it was to participate because she wasn't satisfied not doing anything. And then because ,I think, her grandmother, mentioned she should be on TV. Amira. Worked on her own, with her brother Fincent, to learn how to achieve her ability. The fact she considered it fun made it easier of course. Her focus and determination is what I appreciate in addition to her voice/ music. I admire her for this and her mother confirmed it in the latest "Billboard" show.
To say it is a gift from God is too easy and lessens Amira' s achievement and effort in my opinion, and opinions will vary. If Amira wishes to characterize her singing as a gift from the Almighty she can. But most of the credit is hers! The only Gift is from her to us of her singing and the example she has set as a human being. For that we should be grateful!

The song is too mature for her. A 9 year old should not be singing about throwing oneself into a river.
Correct, she did not know at that time. But Andre Rieu explained it to her, so she did know at the Maastricht performance. The song comes from the opera "Gianni Schicchi" (Puccini), which is in fact a comic opera; and the heroine (Lauretta) was a 15 year old melodramatic brat trying ( and succeeding) to twist her father around her finger, into giving her the money to buy a wedding ring, so she could marry the scion of a family with which her own family was "at war". I think this may account for the smile on her face as she started singing in the Maastricht performance. These comments about the song being too mature for her seem to be from people who do not know the comic aspect of the opera.
