We all laugh at the meme, but I could imagine a giant mechanical steampunk spider as an awesome climax to a movie. I don't think this is what sank Wild Wild West.
A lot of people who work in the fashion industry love this movie for it's campyness and for it's use of actual fashion models, photographers, hair stylists, and makeup artists.

In the New Yorker, Pauline Kael wrote a laudatory review of LAURA MARS and really dug into the movie’s seedy, sensual appeal. Who cares what other critics said about it?
Unpopular opinion, but I LOVED the ending. Tommy lee Jones’s talent really shines through and he has this amazing twitchy fidgety character change. His monologue is so well delivered and Faye falling onto him screaming I love you? Ugh! I feel like it sounds so cheesy now because of how many times the split personality trope has been done. But I feel like this is less a split personality trope and more so amazing characterization on the actors’ part. “He can’t even pay the light bill. If it were up to him he’d be 98 lbs” Just one short monologue gives this peek into two massively different characters and a whole ‘nother movie itself

I actually watched the film with my mom in the theater 1978. While I felt mixed emotions watching it, Tommy Lee Jones was great. I think it fit the disco era. Cold and bitter. In years later, I enjoyed the movie much more than when I originally saw it.
Fascinating backstory to this film, one which I'm pretty fond of. Faye Dunaway though, wow, what a career she had in the 1970's, and I'm not just saying this because she was my late mother's favorite actress, but I think she was one of the best things going in that decade in regarding an actor or actress.
In 1978 John Carpenter also directed a TV movie called Someone's Watching Me with Lauren Hutton, about a woman who's harassed by a voyeur. Carpenter also co-wrote the screenplay for the 1986 movie Black Moon Rising with Tommy Lee Jones.
He said something on Twitter about only doing stuff you love and enjoying life and I wrote back "yeah, but someone has to do the dishes:)" to be a bit cheeky and he liked it. He died 2 days later. I wouldn't have written something so silly to him if I knew he was dying😣

Your commentary and editing is so fantastic that I binge your vids a couple times a week, learning some of the most obscure facts about some of the most obscure movies. And this is coming from a fella who's love ( or lack there of) for movies can be gauged by the fact I have purchased maybe a 1/2 dozen DVD's in my entire life and been to the movies 2 or 3 times in the last 5 years. Brilliant job, Cecil - this was (not surprisingly) a thorough and fantastic look at EOLM. I am now intrigued what would have happened with DePalma directing, but if you think about it, there are a lot of visual and gritty similarities between EOLM and films of DePalma's like Dressed to Kill and Blow Out, and even Carrie. The style just seems similar. Eyes of LM is a weird film, and it has a weird vibe to it, but it is still one of my faves of the 70s. Don't know why. The cast is absolutely amazing. I cannot believe the collection of tremendous actors that are in it (I mean, Dunaway, Jones, Julia, Auberjonois, Dourif, etc). I like what Kirschner evoked with his version of the film, and in many ways, it is a microcosm of NY at the time of the 70s. As a kid who grew up in the 70s in NYC and NJ, I was always and still am drawn to films that were made in the streets of NY. I have always had a romance with the city, even though it has been years since I lived there. I am still, and always will be connected to it. Thank you, as always, for pushing the envelope with terrific takes.

....I'm glad "Disco" was mentioned about this Movie....because, it actually helped a Disco tune go to #1! ...."Let's All Chant" by Michael Zager was FAST becoming popular in Discos, and they added it in a pivotal scene in the Movie (then, the Soundtrack); When the buzz was happening about the flick, the tune hit #1 on the Disco charts (Feb. 1978), and crossed over to hit #36 Pop!
....here's a fun fact about the song....singing backup vocals were...CISSY and WHITNEY HOUSTON....MICHAEL ZAGER....desperately wanted to sign WHITNEY...but her mom said she was too young....

People including actors say Irvin kershner was not quite an easy man to get along with. When he was directing RoboCop 2, he and some of the other stars of the film, including Nancy Allen, just had a very bad influence and could never bond with him. He and Nancy Allen never got along and just didn't like each other. Peter Weller said kershner was almost the same way to him, but he also said from time to time, he'd see Nancy crying and bawling because of kershner pushing her around. Which is the ultimate reason why she was killed off in the 3rd movie. She just didn't want to do it again. So according to a lot of actors, producers and executives, Irvin kershner wasn't always quite someone to give a warm welcome and argued with with people a lot and he just wasn't somebody to get along with. But at least he's done some great movies. No matter what.

Great movie, fascinating mini documentary. The chilling scenes where Laura sees through the eyes of the killer are similar to the POV shot of young Michael Myers wearing the clown mask in the opening scene from HALLOWEEN. So a bit of John Carpenter remained in EYES after all. And then a couple months later in 1978, HALLOWEEN was unleashed upon the world. Pretty cool.

Cecil, I have to say that I am with you on this one. I first saw EYES OF LAURA MARS on TV when I was a teenager (it was network television and somewhat censored) and I liked it. I have a copy and as you said, I appreciate it for it is rather than what it could have been.

Jon Peters, heck, A Star is Born with his hair back in the day, that is some rare hair there. Upon reflection, Warren Beatty's character from "Shampoo" being based on Peters makes sense (Peters' hair clearly agrees with Shampoo).
I actually caught this on Turner Classic Movies, sometime last year, & I absolutely loved it. It is flawed, but I still very much enjoyed it. Also, I didn't see the ending coming. For the majority of the film, I was thinking that Rene Auberjoinis, lol, I'm pretty sure I misspelled his last name there, but I thought that his character was gonna turn out to be the killer. Lol, boy was I wrong! It's fascinating to learn that John Carpenter was attached to this, & that he wrote the original script for this. I did not know that.

I was an avid Mad Magazine reader back when this was out and they always had very good parody titles: they renamed this “EYES OF LURID MESS”! Sounds about right....
I loved Seaquest DSV. It's too bad they screwed it up. I couldn't watch all of the first episode of the third season. But the first two were pretty good. Basically Star Trek underwater. It had heart and it would have been cool to see what it could have been if they hadn't dicked with it. They tried to keep it grounded in science and even had little educational spots about the ocean in the first season. The dicking started with season 2 when they tried upping the action. This pissed off the lead, Roy Schieder, and he wanted out. Which lead to the disastrous abomination of season 3. At any rate, if you're looking to relive a nostalgic bit of 90s TV, check out the first couple of seasons. Then try to watch the first episode of season 3 and then shut it off. ;)

Cecil, I have to say that I am with you on this one. I first saw EYES OF LAURA MARS on TV when I was a teenager (it was network television and somewhat censored) and I liked it. I have a copy and as you said, I appreciate it for it is rather than what it could have been.
Watched it today and my opinion lands about where yours does. But wow, what a catalyst of talent and events.

Jon Peters, heck, A Star is Born with his hair back in the day, that is some rare hair there. Upon reflection, Warren Beatty's character from "Shampoo" being based on Peters makes sense (Peters' hair clearly agrees with Shampoo).

I actually caught this on Turner Classic Movies, sometime last year, & I absolutely loved it. It is flawed, but I still very much enjoyed it. Also, I didn't see the ending coming. For the majority of the film, I was thinking that Rene Auberjoinis, lol, I'm pretty sure I misspelled his last name there, but I thought that his character was gonna turn out to be the killer. Lol, boy was I wrong! It's fascinating to learn that John Carpenter was attached to this, & that he wrote the original script for this. I did not know that.

I really like this movie and own it. The poster really freaked me out as kid. I used to see it everywhere billboards, bus stops etc. Between this and the Magic (1978) poster I was traumatized.😬

Yo, I watched THE EDITOR and it was awesome. I do wish they would have played it a little more straight as it was a good story idea but it was funny as shit.

I was an avid Mad Magazine reader back when this was out and they always had very good parody titles: they renamed this “EYES OF LURID MESS”! Sounds about right....

I loved Seaquest DSV. It's too bad they screwed it up. I couldn't watch all of the first episode of the third season. But the first two were pretty good. Basically Star Trek underwater. It had heart and it would have been cool to see what it could have been if they hadn't dicked with it. They tried to keep it grounded in science and even had little educational spots about the ocean in the first season. The dicking started with season 2 when they tried upping the action. This pissed off the lead, Roy Schieder, and he wanted out. Which lead to the disastrous abomination of season 3. At any rate, if you're looking to relive a nostalgic bit of 90s TV, check out the first couple of seasons. Then try to watch the first episode of season 3 and then shut it off. ;)

Kirshner's take on fashion and violence is pretty canny. The photos used in the clip are by Helmut Newton who equated fashion with sadomasochism!! How interesting!!!
