This was a very exciting time in the Seattle area. The modules were huge. The tugs featured in the video, the flat bowed pusher tugs were way out of their elements. Thanks for the video.

I remember these sea lifts in the early 80s. The modules would block the roads for days as they moved on the crawlers I worked up in Prudhoe a little over 20 years spanning 1979-2013. I spent another six years working out of a pump station.

@@Chris_at_Home I remember hearing welders getting $800 a day wages. Crazy money. Lol. It was exciting. This is the first account I've heard of the ice struggles. The coast guard ice breakers are now fishing boats. The Courageous and the Baranof. Very cool to see them doing their original work.

I worked one season in Prudhoe Bay as a tug boat engineer in the late 80's. I was surprised to see the first boat I was assigned to in this video...the pusher tug Toolik River! Not very big, but extremely maneuverable with triple CAT diesels and triple rudders. I also spent some time on the tug Arctic Fox. We went from Prudhoe Bay to Point Barrow with equipment to map the sea bed. It was in preparation to relocate an off shore oil platform positioned off Barrow. It was a very memorable time and I worked with some great people.

So, my question is, was this really a film about the Cast Guard, or Atlantic Richfield? It seems that the first third, at least, is all about finding and drilling for oil and gas. They knew they would run into ice, but didn't plan to rent an icebreaker?

Rent it from who? If you need it you have to go to who has them. Our coast guard or Russia’s. I am sure they paid.

Blandishments of balmy weather. They don't write like that anymore.

It's lovely. Nothing like it has ever since been made. It's a pleasant time capsule.
