@redpixel7000 "Efige..Efige" translates to "She left..She left"...basically the song is about a girl that left him and he's wondering all over the streets seeking to find her again..A brilliant song by brilliant singer......
I'm an American of English/Swedish background, but I really like this...it sounds like Greek "soul" music. All Europeans/Americans owe Greeks our gratitude for beating the Persians at Salamis and holding them off at Thermopylae...Western Civilization owes a lot to the Greeks.
I had to finally find out about this song after seeing it on a DVD episode of "The Wire".....I assumed that this was a more modern song, maybe from the 1980's or 90's, it's pretty cool that it dates back all the way to the 1960's. Stelios Kazantzidis led a very interesting life, a true "rags to riches" story. I had just a tiny bit of Ouzo left in a bottle that I had forgotten about, I finished it tonight in honor of Stelios!
It's from the film "Foukarades kai leftades"(1966). The lady dancing is Despoina Stylianopoulou. I love the sound of the "farfisa", the greek hammond, so typical those days.
I dont understand a word of this song, but since I first heard this, I CAN NOT stop listening to it. Beautiful. I'm so happy I've now heard this....... Bravo
If want to confront, I don't hide behind any language. I write in Greek for all my Greek brothers and sisters, and for our large philhelene's. Our language is pure and unchanged for thousands of years because of our strength, intellect, and pride. NO ONE has been able to break us...THAT'S true lion hearted strength!!!
I defend my people when our culture and history is disrespected. This is a site for the voice of modern Greece. I'm am the TRUEST defenition of the Greek spirit. Anyone who can't understand that isn't a proud or respectable person..PERIOD.
Sounds a lot like old Indian music...probably cos Alexander great left 50,000 Greeks to breed in Pakistan (old time India) and the culture musical styles mixed
A man's words show his strength and his value. Confidence is shown in quick wit, and an iron response. This is the Greek way that along with our language has lasted since ancient times. This I'm very proud of as a Greek man and am more than willing to share with and include our many friends all over the world. Hellas ya panta; me pathos ke agapi!.
One day, I decided to buy a tape full of classic Greek recordings from the 50's, 60's, and early 70's. This very song was on it, and I immediately loved anything Kazantdzidis did with Marinella from that era. Great music!
I have a hot (piece of) iron in my heart Its your love that tortures me In my entire life I will have A burden on my conscience For (because of) the so many mistakes of mine That turned you away from me She left, she left, she left, I lost her And I have caught (taken) the streets I wake up from my sleep and I ask for you Now I understood how much I love you In my entire life I will have A burden on my conscience For (because of) the so many mistakes of mine That turned you away from me
Thanks a lot stevekafkoulas for explaining the essence of the song. I am originally from Bangladesh and living in Dubai, UAE. For a person who does not understand a single word of Greek, I found this song to be amazing. Maybe its the emotion in the signer's voice, tune, musical instruments used or the context it was used in (I also heard this song first on The Wire) it just left a fantastic impression on me. Thanks for your comment. Do let me know if there are other songs like this.
I heard this song on the season two finale of The Wire...after searching for quite a while I've finally found! This song blows my mind. Now I just need to find the music for bouzouki.

You have to buy the whole album. It is great song, even greater show. That's where I heard it. The lack of a score is something I really like about the series. When they do break it out, its that much stronger. Efige Efige was a great choice.
