    Came here from your "RS2" vid and I'm smiling at your comments about the handling of this car...... GREAT VIDS THANK YOU.

    • @volkswizard
      @volkswizard  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Daniel, it's a pleasure (it really is!). I'd better watch it as I can't recall what I said but I know I wasn't too impressed as I wasn't when I had my own one, it's a very odd setup, probably not helped by effectively having 25mm spacers on the wheels to fill the arches!

      @danielmarshall4587 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@volkswizard Not at all, if I remember you said of the RS2 that it was nicer to drive along "B" road than the B5 RS4 even though the RS2 was very much a softer set up. Anyway thank you again and all the best.

    Stunning example, hasn't overly dated either, but then I'm going to say that owning an A2 from the same era. Shares the climate panel with the RS4 so I can pretend I have a little bit of sporting pedigree if I squint a little... ;) I do really like that example, immensely practical too. You were spoilt during your trip to MK Andrew.

    • @volkswizard
      @volkswizard  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks Darren! There are a few things in common though the A2 has a more advanced construction and (dare I say it) superior body control. Presumably the ASF's stiffness meant the chassis engineers had more flexibility (excuse pun) to find the sweet spot. Both great cars from the same factory :)

    • @darrencottrell5541
      @darrencottrell5541 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Indeed, I always wanted to take the A2 'home' as part of an extended social. Good to hear you did so with your own RS4. My own A2 sits on Monroe Reflex shocks, H&R lowered-stiffened sports springs and H&R front and rear anti roll bars. Combined with the ASF and summer 17s, I'd say the chassis out-performs the FSI engine for sure. ;) Hope you've had success with your A2 purchase and I look forward to a vlog in due course if so. Congratulations on another great video, please do keep them coming, I'm quite an addict.

    Think this was the highpoint of RS cars for me (and possibly c5 RS6) they had a real skunkworks feel to them, subsequent RS's although dynamically superior and more resolved never felt as special. Love the spec on this particular example, the yellow, pole positions and alcantara wheel / gear knob just increase the sense of occasion. Great video really enjoyed it.

    • @volkswizard
      @volkswizard  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Totally agree Peter. Skunkworks cars are always there to lay the foundations for future generations which is where the profit really is (in this case the B7 which was unlimited and sold in big numbers). Likewise Mk4 R32 and Mk5 R32. Glad you enjoyed the video and thank you for commenting :)

    I've had like 6 B5'S, I just love the timeless look of it, it's not boxy nor is it looking to modern, it's somthing in between. I absolute love it, and yet I still have one, a black B5. In the mean time I've owned the S8 D3, a Audi A6 C5, Porsche, Range Rover and still I came back to the B5.

    Brilliant video Andrew. This has always been one of the dream cars to have in either Avus silver or Red. Unfortunately still never had the opportunity to drive one. I did see an S4/RS4 wide body for sale a couple of weeks ago that was very tempting, such a shame Audi never offered the B5 RS4 as a saloon.

    • @volkswizard
      @volkswizard  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Dave! Maybe we can sort you out with a passenger ride at Audi Driver International though they are thin on the ground these days Seems like yesterday they were barrelling down to Avon Rise at 130 mph in close succession! There are the odd saloons around, most are conversion but one might have even been from the factory.

    • @volkswizard
      @volkswizard  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks Darren! I think the engine just caught some new tech in turbo charging plus it had some old school tuning work done by Cosworth hence why it's so good. The Mk4 Golf was out at the same time as the RS4 and that was pretty poor chassis wise. I do also think they had to make it soft for fear that it might damage the bodyshell but I am just speculating. Glad you enjoyed it and thanks for commenting.

      I always drive within the limits of the car and spend time getting a feel for it before driving it hard. The car has been stored in a dehumidified bubble so the tyres haven't perished or hardened. The grip available was actually surprisingly good. An Up! GTI its factory fitted eco tyres is a lot more scary :)

    I always associate that model avant with rocket ship mileage diesels with a boot full of dog hairs! Still looks nice though. Would the saloon version be a bit more rigid and handle better? Didn't realise the cosworth heritage, I guess like MB they kept it fairly quiet?

    • @carllynch8798

      Mr Stanhope they didn’t do a B5 RS4 saloon only as a avant (estate)

    • @volkswizard
      @volkswizard  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Mr Stanhope, thanks for commenting! As carl says this model was just an Avant but I'd imagine a saloon would have been more rigid, I definitely think that was the case with the B7 when both body styles were available. The Cosworth connection was mentioned in the brochure but nowhere else apart from in press reports (nothing on the car).

  • @vanomaden
    @vanomaden ปีที่แล้ว

    owned one of these cars in the past. It was significantly slow on the track due to severe understeer issues. The stock brakes were subpar and required replacement after 6 laps on the Nurburgring. They put proper brakes in after Audid had replaced the stock ones 4 or 5 times on warranty. The engine had to be swapped out within the first 10,000 kilometers. After it ended up in a ditch at a low speed (under 10km/h), it needed a complete overhaul because it had literally warped. On another unfortunate occasion, I accidentally hit a cat while driving at night, resulting in a repair cost of 6,000 euros due to damage to the cheap plastic underbody.
    Despite these setbacks, it could have been an enjoyable daily commuter if it were more fuel-efficient. Unfortunately, it was impossible to achieve a fuel consumption of less than 20 liters per 100 kilometers.

      Thanks Keith! The colour is interesting. Because it's a relatively staid estate car body it does lend itself to looking more supercar with a bright colour. However most were sold to businessmen who used them as daily drivers and many went for plain colours like Avus silver. But Nogaro blue, Misano red or this Imola yellow would be nice choice now they are collectors' cars.

    Fitted a H&R dedicated S4 coilover suspension kit to my B5 S4 and it transformed the handling (mostly as the 212k mile OEM dampers were very, very tired). Love this Audi platform, great looking, great handling and completely over engineered. They are also petite in comparison to modern machinery which makes them far more practical and easy to place on the road. Would not sell mine for any money.

    Definitely a dream car of mine, which annoyingly my parents own! I’ve also never seen another with said interior.
    (This is not meaningless internet bragging, but more for information) Ours is Nogaro Blue with the same alcantara wheel & gear knob. It also has the Recaro one piece buckets, but with RS4 also embossed on the headrest. It strangely has the option of the ‘hi-tech’ seat fabric front and back, which certainly makes the interior seem more consistent. Again, I’ve never seen another in a similar spec, truly cult unique cars, I love ours, it’s never leaving the family!

    There’s something about these German performance-luxury cars from this era that screams quality. The new ones look cool with bunch of bits and pieces fitted to them but they’re kinda gimmicky and silly, and mostly plastic. But cars like this one and it’s counterparts from the era will always be my favorite, not completely digital but still offer all the features you’d want and they just have this timeless look to them.

      HI Gurpreet. I am sorry your are disappointed with the video. It's true it could have been better but with zero budget and working largely on my own and under significant time pressure this was the best I could do. Plus there is only so much you can do working on the public highway. Just for reference, what were you expecting from a TH-cam video from someone with 5000 subscribers? There are many other videos on this particular car available from other TH-cam channels so hopefully you will get what you expect from those. Although I am pretty sure I am the only one who has worked out why it has such an unusual specification, many don't even reference what's standard and what's not.
