On Sunday March 25, 2012, The Reverend Dr. Howard- John Wesley took to the pulpit of the Alfred Street Baptist Church to respond to the Trayvon Martin incident. This is Part 2 of his sermon "A Rizpah Response." May we continue to pray for Trayvon's parents and the Zimmerman family..
This is absolutely amazing!
Incredible. Incredible teaching. God has greatly USED this man of God, Dr. Howard-John Wesley. May God BLESS him and his family.
We feel with you all the way from Namibia 😢 powerful message
They're "Our" Children!!!
Oh - in case anyone is curious - some Biblical scholars/archeologists put the death of Rizpah's sons 32 years after David became king. This was also after Absalom (David's son) tried to usurp power. It would be illogical to assume that Rizpah's sons bore any threat after 32 years of David's reign.
Lastly, I'm not saying that there should not be justice for Trayvon, since as a believer I love justice, and the LORD requires that we seek justice for all. I'm just saying that you added to the case of the text, and you know the warning there is for teachers my friend. I named my daughter after Rizpah, and so I'm very familiar with her and the uses of her name throughout the OT, including in Isaiah 6:6; ritzpah is the Hebrew word for burning coal.
Hi Vjenckz, could you please explain "the uses of her name throughout the Old Testament?" I appreciate the Isaiah 6:6 reference. What is the significance of "burning coal?" Are there any other references you can provide? Thank you kindly for your reply.
The case of Rizpah's sons happens SEVERAL years after David's throne has been fully established. If you say David was threatened, you are adding to the text as I already said, but the reality of the text is that a famine was over the land (go back and read the text) and the LORD said what the reason for the famine was, the blood guilt of Saul's line. Therefore, as you know in the Torah, murder caused blood guilt. The LORD determined that the Gibeonites were to be avenged, not David
You have failed also so be careful and correct the way the WORD OF GOD SAYS TOO! GO TO THAT PERSON AND THAT PERSON ALONE AND THEN PRIVATELY TELL THEM! DO IT WITH LOVE AND PLEASE WATCH HOW YOU DO IT SO THAT YOU OFFEND NO ONE!
Out of curiosity, does anyone have proof from scripture that the reason David gave them up was due to fear of them claiming the throne, as opposed to what 2 Sam 21 says is the reason?
Especially since David preserves the life of one of Saul's descendants? Kinda matters. A lot.
The part about David being threatened by their lineage isn't true concerning the context of these scriptures, and the context of earlier ones. David was anointed by GOD to be the next king of Israel (1 Sam 16:1-23), so for this sermon to say that he was threatened by lineage is an eisegesus (adding meaning to the text). David and the House of Saul settled their conflict in battle (2 Samuel 1-5), although the House of Saul was clearing ignoring God's anointing of David as king.
