As a latin descent hockey fanatic, it does do something for me to see some players be open with showing their heritage some love. Latin, Slavic, etc, whatever, it brings in new fans to show love to your family's country of origin.
Ilikebeaversandeaglesupyourass He’s mestizo. He’s actually more white than Native American. Don’t call Mexican a race. Mexican is a nationality. If anything He’s mestizo.
I'm from Phoenix Arizona. Very happy thrilled for Hispanic American Player in the NHL. He, and Alec Martinez of VGK are role models for future Latinos. And all ethnicities.
Growing up (born & raised) in Toronto, as the only Mexican family who was into hockey (that we knew of), and whose 2 sons (myself & my older brother) both played hockey, I always dreamed of the day a Mexican or someone of Hispanic descent would play in the NHL...nevermind for my HOME TEAM Leafs!!! I always imagined it would happen in the US first, since their Mexican population is so huge compared to Canada's, but surprisingly...over the decades, the Mexican/Hispanic community has grown very large in Toronto. Hopefully having Matthews playing for the Leafs sparks a surge in Latino/Hispanic players in the league 🙏🇲🇽💪 p.s. I realize there have been a couple of other Latino players in the league (e.g. Scott Gómez - NY Rangers) None have been "Superstars" & didn't really speak much about their Hispanic heritage.
my dad is mexican and he made me a leafs fan when i was growing up because when moved to toronto he couldnt watch his pumas games so he settled for hockey. this year i finally started playing hockey myself and seeing auston represent hispanic hockey players especially on my home team is the best.
Mcdavid might be NHLs most skilled player however I love the authenticity you get from Papi, he's himself and very natural. You don't get that with McDavid, rather he's more robotic and provides answers the way the franchise has trained him to do, which is greatly outlined in the "10 things I can not live with out".
Negl the interview seemed a bit flat. Not sure if an interviewer more involved in latino/hispanic culture would've helped or maybe the questions weren't the correct ones, but it was nice hearing what Auston and Ema had to say about the topic :)
DJ!!!! 👏🏼 This was was so inspiring! As a Hispanic-Canadian, this was so wonderful to watch. I grew up watching hockey and never saw many latinos play hockey. Watching Austin Matthews is surreal. Thank you for this. 🙏🏽

Meeting matthewws is my life dream I never stop talking about him when my parents hear me talk about him there probably thinking does this girl ever shut up about him like seriously Matthews is such a awesome positive guy the leafs need to keep him and protect him as much as they can love ya matthewws
So proud he’s pushing the sport for us Latinos! Not a lot of Hispanics in the NHL, so I’m glad that we have an icon like Mathews to be absolutely destroying the game for us! 🇲🇽🇺🇸
This was great, I’ve always wanted an NHL player to go on hot ones and I think auston would be great for it - might actually be able to handle some of the heat
I think Auston is like "Yes, im half-Mexican, can we talk about Hockey now". This interview reminded me of those spoof articles about the one african-american's house being the historical black part of town.
My parents who's from El Salvador me being from Vancouver and a big Canucks, being Canadian it's nothing new to me to for Latins living in Canada to be hockey fans. Big Canucks playoff games we had parties with all types of salvadorean food
I love Austin Mathews (even tho he’s a leaf). I feel so sorry for him. Every interview I have seen him do he always gets asked a absolutely stupid question or two. But I’m impressed with how he handles them when they happen.
I'm mexican. I Love hockey. But it was not affordable unfortunately. And then I got older got a job and afford gear to play in rec leagues. I hope more mexican players come along and give can to us the opportunity to play and grow.

I feel like the fact he was half mexican and from arizona helped him....no pressure no one expects that....and his parents didnt ride him like many others do
Auston has been raised right. The way he says thank you to the restaurant owner bringing food at 5:58 shows that.

Brutal interview, Auston knows it too he just hides it well lol, shout out to Ema for keeping the convo exciting.
