I love how he acknowledges the people who respond on his livestreams, but with the least amount that has to, then if they say something he disagrees with says they're wrong in a matter of fact way and moves along. It's hilarious

Oh man, I didn't listen to their albums for a long long time either and I tell ya what, the first Ozzy batch of records are legit! I was surprised how much I like that run of albums.

Avenged Sevenfold was my gateway band. Cool thing about them is that they have the radio friendly accessible stuff for a newbie, but then also that proggier stuff for a more seasoned metal fan. There’s also a very wide variety of genres in their music.

I was huge into them In high school in the 2ks. Sounding The Seventh Trumpet got me into Metalcore/deathcore. I borrowed it off a buddy back in high school and fell in love with metalcore. I even checked out Throwdown, Poison The Well, and Bleeding Through on Limewire since they were thanked in the liner notes. As well as getting into the then new bands like TDWP, August Burns Red, BMTH etc.
They were one of my firsts too along with popular radio nu metal like Slipknot
As I Lay Dying was the 1st extra heavy metal band I got into

My gateway band was Disturbed. I don't even remember when I found them, but they were the first metal band I really got into. Although my initial introduction to metal was playing Guitar Hero with my cousins.
Surprised Finn hasn’t dived more into guitar hero and rock band. It was rocks last hurrah, and introduced alot of young kids to different types of rock.
@noshttaken yeah. I always played the metal stuff because it was generally the hardest stuff in those games, so I'm not surprised that I quickly wanted to listen to more.

Caught them opening for freaking Kittie over 20 years ago. Shortly before or after the debut album dropped, was a good show. Actually going with to see them Labor Day weekend coming up, weirdly enough.
I'm 36 and the first metal I listened to was my mom's Paranoid album. That album fucking SLAPS!
Danzig was my metal music gateway. I was also into goth/new wave and punk music at the time. Saw Danzig in 92, best show I have ever been to. In high school in the late 80's I got into Cream and The Doors. So it was a progression for me.

The secret to Suffer the Children by Napalm Death is that the two guitarists played the ryth. They were both unconsciously playing different riffs without nailing it. I tried recreating it with different gear so my tone was off but my playing was too tight. I mentioned that I suspected that to Mitch Harris and he laughed and said that's exactly what happened. So the whole riff is like warped and smeared which makes it sound GODLIKE. They were also not intonated the same so it sounds like a phasing chorus thing.

That's a foundational album, Harmony Corruption! It really just hit at the right time for me. First time I ever heard a blast beat. RIP Jesse Pintado who was a riff machine.
On the topic of Black Sabbath, correct me if I'm wrong but I think Iommi tuned his guitar down to make it easier for him to play after he cut his fingertip off in a machine shop. I would guess the less string tension would help in that situation

Yeah he cut his fingertips off in a sheet metal factory incident right before leaving to tour Germany with his other band. He almost gave up music but then decided to persevere after hearing a Django Reinhardt record that his boss gave him. So he fashioned plastic fingertips and glued leather strips for traction.
Sabbath’s first two albums were in standard tuning but after a couple years of constant touring Tony Iommi was in constant pain after gigs. So for the recording of Master of Reality he dropped the tuning one and a half steps down and strung his guitar with lighter banjo strings.
They accidentally created sludge metal out of convenience lol

Truly, Finn is a POSUER. On a serious note, I disagree about Black Sabbath: they are a great band because the songs are amazing, not only due to the heavyness.
I think if we can get him to listen to Volume 4 we can get him to like them

Megadeth has been my favorite band for 30 years. # 2 is Testament, then Pantera, then Anthrax, and Death rounds out my Top 5. Rust in Peace is my favorite album of all time.
Well, you *can* go backwards. My introduction to metal was Arch Enemy, Immortal, Marduk and Masters Hammer. Ive spent years listening to this kind of things and only after that I discovered Black Sabbath and other "dinosaurs" and I loved it. Especially after I did acid a couple of times lately my love for Black Sabbath reached a completely new level - Sabotage and Sabbath Bloody Sabbath are INCREDIBLE albums to listen to while tripping.
I found out that going back comes at a later stage, and it's usually rewarding.
Most of what I do is go backwards. And I mean 1950s Delta blues backwards lol
Linkin Park was my gateway and Slipknot cemented my love for metal. Love most metal genres thanks to them
Linkin Park was my official start of my love for heavier stuff (Hybrid Theory/Meteora) but my 1st "metal" I ever listened to was old Motley Crue (Dr. Feelgood). Slipknot soon followed (MFKR, Iowa, Subliminal Verses) and I never looked back lol

Rise against was my introduction into heavy music, Ready To Fall had harsh vocals in the pre chorus and got me accustomed to that style. The 3 metal songs I really got into which evolved my music taste forever was....

This was bang on. Been playing me_al for almost 30 years and I am sad to see where the genre has gone. No songs anymore, just riff salads with fast noise gates and drum vsts.

As a kid Im glad I started musically with the old stuff and worked my way towards modern day, I got to assess each wave as a whole that way, but Finn is right about it being difficult to make your tastes go backward.
I love Dream Theater and I don't play any instruments. Admittedly my brother actually got me into them and he played the drums back in the day but I never did and I still love them. Train of Thought is my favorite album of theirs, it's also considered their heaviest album, at least from their early years. If there's any Dream Theater album you might actually appreciate Finn it very well could be it, strongly recommend it for people who like the heavier metals and aren't really into prog.

i met rob halford, he was really cool. when my dad was in the navy he gave halford a tour of the battle ship USS Milius. Halford gave me and my dad front row seats to a concert they had at SDSU and he wore my dads captain hat (navy hat, idk what its calledd) and gave us a shoutout. I wont forget that
Motorhead were the band that got me as a kid, and they remained a cool band all through out my adulthood unlike many of the other 80s bands I liked as a kid
Yooo I was the same way with the Sabbath journey, I started off with nu metal and punk, it wasn't until I was out of highschool that I got into Sabbath. I felt so guilty.

Sepultura is a good starting point, you start at Arise and you can take 2 paths either forward or backward from there
Deep Purple "In Rock" beat Black Sabbath. Black Sabbath's actual metal album was 1971 "Master of [what was it?]", while "In Rock" was released in 1970. "In Rock" was fast an ferocious, while Black Sabbath was slow. When I think of metal, it's WAY more often Fast than slow.
Mustaine naming his new band Megadeth after being ousted from Metallica reminds me of when former Atari employees in the 80s left to create Activision, choosing that specific name so that they'd alphabetically show up in the phone book before Atari. Same energy.

Steppenwolf is great. Exactly one of the bands that led me on this path. A lot of your perspective is strongly age related. At 52 it was different exposure to the genre when younger.

Absolutely! No idea why FF get so overlooked in this sense. Dino Cazares and Raymond Herrera are the godfathers of djent. Would be amazing if they teamed up again, one last time and got all the OG members back.
Don't put that kinda evil on FF, they shred way too hard with way too much distortion to even be mildly associated with djent. If anything, I'd say Dream Theater is the precursor for djent.

Theres this very niche and specific sound that some bands have been doing where they combine hyperpop and breakcore-esque synths with metal and it sounds really fucking cool and innovative, omerta and fromjoy are actually the only ones ive seen doing it, if you know more please tell me :333

the thing about Death MEtal and all that extreme stuff that followed is that it wasn't borderline mainstream enough to get airplay and ACTUALLY piss people off. It just sits in obscurity and has NO effect.

It’s crazy how many crazy good musicians were in hair metal bands when you think about it. So many amazing guitar players from that era. Every band seemingly had that one guy who could melt your face off with a guitar. Lol
On a side note, 20mins into this video and I swear, no joke, there’s been 5 million ads and Ive had to restart a dozen times because every time an ad comes on, it effs up the feed and I lose video, or it wont reload. ARGH! TH-cam sucks.

Megadeth never really landed with me and it took me a while to work out why - I think it's because they don't have many full tilt thrash parts, similar to something like Beneath The Remains.
The starter kit for me ? When i was a kid and heard a Rock band for the first time. It was Queen on TV performing "We Will Rock You/ We Are The Champions". Next i saw The Who's music video for "Who Are You", then Rush's "Tom Sawyer", then finally i heard Black Sabbath, Rush, Iron Maiden then Metallica. I was hooked !
I used to have the Grindcrusher VHS. it had the songs and interviews, I wore that thing out.
I don't consider Guns n' Roses hair metal because I don't consider them metal at all. Rather, they're a continuation of hard rock - following in the footsteps of bands like Aerosmith. Hell, their original EP covered an Aerosmith song.
I'm not mad. They did tour with Metallica and they're heavier than a lot of hair metal bands so I see the logic in calling them hair metal.
Finn, just watch sweet and innocent Elizabeth over at "the Charismatic Voice" cover "Before I forget" by Slipknot. She said metal people are good people. Bring her to the light before it's too late.
