No disrespect to either of the Brands. Growing up as an Indiana wrestler I was Dan Gable everything. All my speeches in class were Gable or Iowa related, I had the Asics Tiger Dan Gable signature wrestling shoes the minute they hit the shelves .... but I gotta say, I am a Penn State wrestling fan these days. Good is good, and I still appreciate the Iowa wrestling program and what coach Brands, both of them, have done there. But in the end I really like how Cael has handled himself and the wrestling style he has engraved in and demands from his wrestlers. Its not for everyone, probably why some leave, i.e. Suriano. He teaches aggressive pursuit yet with class and respect. Anyway, could go on forever but that's my story.
This just endears me more to Brands, I've NEVER heard another NCAA coach talk about specific schools that they applied to and got turned down for...in any sport...wrestling, football, etc...usually they say stuff like "I've had some great offers, but CHOSE to stay at _________(insert school)" props to him...
Great interview! I'm not a huge fan of Iowa but I appreciate this man's dedication and effort throughout his life. And they are definitely a talented squad, no doubt.
Tom & his brother(Terry) were beasts on the matt. Tom didn't become a 3x champ plus has one of the most wins(at home as a wrestler) for nothing, because of Dan Gable it showed that hard work pays off. Look back at all of the wrestlers Gable coached that became National Champs and 9 straight team titles plus more! Selecting Tom Brands was one of the best moves Iowa made!!
As someone who is currently out of a job, I sit here thinking that I am the right candidate for so many companies. It's surprising to hear that Tom didn't even get interviews at certain schools. Eventually, the right place will see the value in me, just like Iowa saw the value in Tom. Fingers crossed to a fruitful future.
brands got his swag way up with the backwards caps and the more fitted clothes, sometimes he rocks the turtle necks and quarter zips too. so funny to see him drippy low key, nike up and down head to toe!
I remember when Tom and Jerry became Fox catchers and it was very indelible because at that point we all knew Schultz and Dupont one of the very very very very very best and there was just who cares what friendships who will line with what it didn't matter it just says who is number one and the cream rises
They no longer have a program. The Oregon University Wrestling program was 50 years old when the A.D. decided to "buy a job and a Baseball Team" by eliminating the Ducks mat program. I think the 2006-2007 season was their last. The A.D. Pat Kilkenny decided that the Pacific Northwest needed another college Baseball team. Oregon State has a team, and at that time they had just won their 2nd College World Series. Nothing burns more in Eugene than someone in Corvallis winning ANYTHING.
Had. I was recruited by them in late 80s. Shane Webster won NCAA title at 184 in 2006 vs Roger Kish. Dropped program around 2008-9. Chael Sonnen wrestled there 1996-2000? Still a sore subject in Oregon
All u need to know about UOregon wrestling... pass on Brands(#1 in the country), Zeke (just beat Cael & Penn st), take Kearney and drop program. Infuriating
Im an Oregon guy too (Crater). Kills me they still don't have a team. Was coaching at Crater 2006'7 and Oregon had about 5 of our guy on the roster. Tom probably made the right choice, you're right. Imagine him amd Terry as Ducks??? Crazy
That’s crazy he went 0-7 in interviews. There’s a lot of politics to getting certain jobs. Lol I can imagine his drive and pride probably rubbed the modest wrong a few times.
I was saying the same thing.. Who does Tom Brands not get a Head Coach job? He brings so much to the table..Maybe cause his personality is A type? I’m sure Iowa is very happy to have him.
D1 schools can only offer 9.9 scholarships and most wrestlers only get partial scholarships as they spread the 9.9 scholarships around to several people on a partial scholarship basis..
Bill Moos made so many bad decisions for Oregon it has made Ducks fans vomit...and now i learn he made another one? Turning down Brands is as stupid as it gets. Phil Knight finally ran Moos out of town, thank God.
I'm a Penn State fan, but I think the Iowa program is in good hands with Tom Brands. Really intelligent guy.

The Brands don’t seem to age.
They take care of themselves and love what they do

Not only that, but being a good sport about not getting hired and saying that he wasn't the best person at the time.
@@chamboyette853 It's easier to say now given that Iowa is a top five job, at worst, in the country.
@@znhait Still not everyone would talk like that.

Go hawks! Brands is a Gable guy!! Love it
I love these inside, behind the scene stories.
Penn State grad here, but I really like Tom Brands.

Man I didn't know Tom applied at Missouri, didn't even get an interview...sucks to think how much better that program potentially could have been.
This is a smart man. I learned a lesson or two from him in 10 minutes.
Great work ethic and determination in this interview with Coach Brands. Awesome lesson to keep working hard.
Oregon! Hey Oregon!!! What the heck we you guys thinking???
I guess that’s why you are where you guys have been
...I'm from Oregon SMH
Growth. The growth of champions
Tom Brands are intense and very cerebral. Terry is a no nonsense driven to excellence. They know their $#!t.

I can not believe all of those schools passed on Tom, especially Oklahoma!!!!
Could you imagine Tom Brands, and Terry for that matter, being anywhere other than Iowa.
I remember when Tom and Jerry became Fox catchers and it was very indelible because at that point we all knew Schultz and Dupont one of the very very very very very best and there was just who cares what friendships who will line with what it didn't matter it just says who is number one and the cream rises
Why the hell did Oregon Hire Kearny over two Olympic finalists? I would bet that Oregon would still have its program if that would be the case..
Oregon showed loyalty to a guy that’s been there with them and they paid for it.
Does Oregon have a program?
maybe he meant state

I'm not saying Kearney was the best pick but he had been an assistant there for many years and familiarity definitely plays a factor when hiring.

Kearney was my coach! Good thing you didn’t make the move. Oregon Wrestling team was cut not too long after

"Offer" as in scholarship offer? Not cash?
Brands really didn’t get an interview at Mizzou… FUCK
Edit!! So Oklahoma is forgiven!
Twist of kane no
everybody new he was an Iowa guy and would leave whenever that job came open
Great point. Basically stealing a coach from Gable was probably seen as bad luck or bad form.

I’m talking about the University of Oregon ya Ding Dong! Did you not watch and “listen” more importantly to what he said????
Yea talk about smh.....
Low offer ... Job at the quicky lube?
Probably just a 1/4 or 1/2 scholarship instead of a full scholarship. Something like that.
Its a new wrestling move
Anybody else find it weird when he was talking about a “low offer”? Uhhhhh he knows u can’t pay these kids right?
