I own one. It is not a slow as it seems. And he goes from on a side to the other when he could do all the steps of one side the move to the other. Also if it is an emergency (sudden rain) i just install the main top, no the back window, and that is enough.
Then again this car is for real enthusiasts, if you wan comfort get a panamera.
Or get a boxster ,which is the same car minus the head ache. And there is not much difference between the 2 cars
@@alialrashidi1764 you don't even know what are you talking about. There is not comparison between the regular boxster and the spyder. This is one of the lightest Porsches ever produced, has many parts of the 997 GT3 and was considered the best handling car under $100, 000.
Someone said in a Spyder review once "this top is what separates the casual driver from the real passionate driver".
So, I guess this car is just not for you.
@@enriquegonzalez6265 "many parts" = springs, dampers and antiroll bars from the Cayman R. A few thousand grands and you can fit them in any 987.
His face was saying "do I really have to do this?"
Holy Rube Goldberg Batman
Called the Spyder because you need 8 arms to put the roof up or down quickly :-)
@@carlosmyers9305 it’s a pure drivers car. I think anyone who owns this car won’t mind the little extra work to put the top down
Thanks for this video. Although it has been quite some years since uploading, I was looking to buy a used Spyder. This has convinced me to look elsewhere, especially when living in South Florida when thunderstorms appear out of nowhere.
This man is a super hero..... He did it without any F-Bomb!!!!
This is nuts!
Love that the rear window can be left out for sound and air to flow in. Being totally manual beings another level of connection to the car.
OMG What a beautiful and wonderful automobile, but what a wretched top design. I'm really at a loss for words...
impracticality is what makes this car special
Thank you for showing me this I will never by this car !
@KovaMusic I wouldn't hold a breath. This is light weight striped down version. If you want an electric roof you can buy normal Boxster or S. This one is for enthusiasts - more playful, more fun, more powerful and lighter.
I like it. Lightweight. Not as difficult as it looks. Nice engineering. Perfect for the niche the Spyder is designed to fill.
@MegaLoveKorea I am a former 2006 MX5 owner and all I can say is my 2008 RS60 Spyder, which has the regular power top, is better in every facet than the Mazda. Both nice cars, for what they are. Porsche's 987.2 Spyder is an awesome car and definately does not bring shame to them.
I love it. Excellent product!
I have a 1969 MG and top comes off and goes on so quick and easy. this is 40+ years of progress?
Now imagine doing this when it is starting to rain. Terrible design.
It starts to pour with rain, do you stop and try and put the roof on or, hit the gas and head for a petrol station or tunnel for shelter?
This is funny as hell, it's like putting up/taking down a tent. Big smile on my face. Suckers.
This reminds me of a car I used to have way back, a 1981 Benz 380SL. The top was manual too, however, the SL took 1/10 the steps the Spyder does, and I thought that a hassle. (Of course, this is almost comparing apples to oranges. The SL was a luxury roadster, not a car you would ever see in a commercial whipping around mountain roads or getting into stoplight drag races, Timmy Tourist types excepted.)
On the SL while sitting in the driver's seat I removed two clamps that were holding the top in place. I then shoved the top rearward to start the stowing process. I exited the car, released the latch that locked the metal top storage area, lifted the lid, then carefully placed the top into the stowage compartment, pressed the cover to engage the latches, voilà I was done.
It took longer to type this description than to release and stow the top. Where this really came in handy was when driving into inclement weather that was not seen (such as a cloudburst). I didn't want rain damaging my leather interior or perhaps a suede jacket laying in the back. In those situations I appreciated that I could quickly pop open the stowage cover and with one hand stretch to partially pull the center of the stored top up and over us to protect the interior, occupants, and contents. Once protected I could casually clamp the top in place.
I could stow my top in less than 60 seconds, from clamp release to driving off. I could have partial top protection within 15 seconds.
At the other extreme over the years I have had power operated tops, where all one needed to do was flip and hold a switch (no hold-down clamps, manual storage cover releases or anything). IMO people with rag tops eventually desire a power operated top, convenience becoming the desired feature, not weight reduction.
Moreover, AFAIK these Boxsters, even the Spyder, are driven by doctors, lawyers, et al. That target market could give a rip about weight reduction and pounds saved by not having a powered top. People going through a midlife crisis or those wanting to impress when pulling up to the café want a powered top, AC, and all the options, against extra charge or not.
I see this as a foolish design by Porsche.
German engineering at it's finest! And the problem is not this particular roof, the problem is that everything about most german cars is like this.. but most of the time automated and when it breaks, you just cry.
Good job on posting this/// but this made sure I won't get this over the Cayman GT4. It's too much hassle to open and close!!! LOL!!!
This is the old Boxster Spyder. The new Spyder's roof is dramatically improved.
The best thing about this video is the mom jeans.
Man, I fell asleep watching that. I just reach overhead to drop the top on my Miata. I hope this is improved on newer Porsche models.
Love this car so much, only if the roof was automatic i may have got one
When I watched this video I assumed he was uninstalling it. I hope the newer versions are automatic operation - this is ridiculous.
I'd have drowned by the time I got that up. Might as well pitch a tent.
@8854548
Because it's the "race" version of the boxster....standard the car doesn't come with radio or A/C why make it with a auto top? Thought I think they should've just put a dry carbon roof.
Why? Would a motorized top really have added that much more weight?
It has been said here before : why would one spend so much money onto a car for such a ridiculous roof system ??
Awesome man I want that so badlly
Who designed this, Rube Goldberg? My Solstice takes 10 seconds to take down, and 15 seconds to put back up.
There is probably somewhere you can park and have shade from the rain. Think about it this way; if you have someone with you, then the process is much quicker!
S3 cabrio,the best!
Yeah thats right brother, easy there with my porsche. Take your time...
wht if it tarted raining?!?
Absolutely LOVE the top! It's one of the best and most unique parts of these first Spyders. Love that it's a manual operation. If it was automatic, it would be pretty boring.
Wife: Hurry up its raining!
I wouldn´t mid if it took 15 minutes to put the top on. That car is gorgeous! If you want comfort buy the Panamera. I´m not that old yet....
Very well done. Pretty simple, actually. What is everyone making such a fuss about?
Still better than the Lambo Murciélago Roadster; the roof it had was simply a nightmare.
Like a boss.
Îmi place aşa ceva. Rabotarea este gîndită la perfecţie, dar ocupă mult timp, cînd te afli sub ploaie.
This is why you are not gonna drive this car on a cloudy day, I mean it.
If you are comaring an SLK to the Spyder then the Spyder is definetly not for you!!!!
I already couldn't afford one,now I reeeeeeeeally can't afford one.
This is a special car designed for track useage... All in the name of saving weight.. Not a daily driver by any means.. Special cars require special treatment... If Porsche would just give it better tires.. But they don't want it faster than a gt3 rs
I get to my front door, press and hold a button on the remote fob. By the time I walk down the drive, to the car my roof 911 roof is down and neatly folded away in the boot.
They do but the manual saves weight.
O-M-G
Love this car but the roof is... sorry, I've no words.
Makes me appreciate my miata 😂
lets see him put it up in a real world situation... lets say your driving in the afternoon and a quick cloud burst comes along.
I can see a lot of paint chips happening if one had to put it on while it is windy. A lot of times it is very windy just before a heavy rain.
Love the car, but they should have made the soft top automatic, or at least make it so it stuffs down into a compartment like a Saturn Sky/Opel GT
If you don't get it.. You don't get it
That was incredibly complicated.
The most German video ever.
Are you kidding me? Why would any one in their right mind want to do this???
very nice car, but that's a shit way to make it convertible
this defeats the purpose of a convertible
I thought German engineering was supposed to make our lives easier, not harder... I would give this car as a gift to the person I hate the most so they'd have to deal with this roof mechanism XD
Do you need a degree or need to pass some sort of test before you do this?
This is actually painful to watch.
Would never buy this car unless I was sure it wouldn't rain 99% of the time. I was seriously considering buying this model until I saw this video. Wow, what a pain in the ass! However I have a theory... I'll bet anything that the next release of this model is a fully electric soft top so buyers will want to buy the next model.
This is like something from the 1930’s::
It looks harder, i thinks, that i could do that in less than a minute with some practice!
OK would you rather spend 15 seconds raising the top, or 15 seconds getting it out..
Now why wud i wanna spend 40000 to 50000 quid and do all that???couldnt they make it automatic??? I personally feel the boxster is the best convert one can get... but if they had made the roof down automatic, it wud ve been like a perfect icing for the best cake...
Saw the other video much more simple. Probably this one is a bit old.
demora muito..se eu tenho um porsche quero tudo rapido..
OMG !! Don't drive in the rain. Because you might get wet. It's very difficult to close and open the roof. Not worth the price paid.
welcome to 1980s..the time when all convertable car need to open manually =]
@GrotrianSeiler i'm disappointed cause if i'm paying top dollar for a sports car. i dont wanna be looking like an idiot when it rains. this is a 5:00+ video mind you.
72.000€ for this....?????
The man's old and meticulous : this could be done much faster.
The new one is electric
mendokusai・・・
Manual open roof? Ridiculous!
this car needs a rain detector, u be fuked if it started raiining, u gotta go thru all that shit to close up ur roof....
so much for german engineering. .hahaha. nippon kicks asss
seeing this makes me not want to buy 1
my porsche opens in 15sec.
How many drivers got wet? So embarassing...
= = what the hell?
@MegaLoveKorea poor troll. 3/10
So inconvenienced !!!! that's why i chose Mer SLK 350 instead of this one ! same price ! :)
q merdaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa
ahahhahaahha porsche dont even have an electronic roof
Man just a whole lot of crybaby crap on this video if you don't like it then don't buy one geeze, as if most of you whiners could afford one doesn't take that long at all and is well worth the extra trouble to have this rare porsche
how pathetic- all that money on a car and you have to get out manually and pull down the roof like a mazda mx5 SHAME ON YOUR PORSCHE
The price its to expensive for just this ugly thing ... Porsche is cheatting you !
Daaaaaamn thats so stupid!
Refer to the Lexus SC430 on flawless luxury convertible top operation. It could conduct a clinic on this piece of shit Porsche.
Stupid design. Clearly with all the ingenuity working at Porsche they could have come up with something a little more intuitive. I can see some yuppie standing beside his Porsche trying to figure out what hinge goes where. Just as well; these cars rarely ever get driven in the elements anyhow. These same yuppies would only take them to the golf course or posh restaurant. If I'm well to do, I would rather get a 911 which is only about $10,000 more than this.
THAT IS SUPER STUPID, WHAT IF IT RAINS, MANNNN. PORSCHE SHOULD HAD DID BETTER THAN THAT WHAT A DISAPPOINTING. THING, IT SUPER SUCKS. WOTH AND (. S ) UCKS SUCKS RECALL IT ITS CRAP THE THE TOP NOT THE CAR 😁👍
hahaha,how stupid is that....its.....
Thank you very much for taking the time to do this (definitely less time consuming than I expected). I appreciate the pace at which everything was done, as to show the exactly where everything is located. Cheers.
