  • It's time to try out one of America's best-known light rail systems: the Metro Light Rail, in Minnesota's Twin Cities. Minneapolis and St. Paul are the two largest cities in the state, and they are located only a few miles from each other. They make up the same metropolitan area, and so they have a shared transit system. This includes two light rail lines, the Blue Line and the Green Line.
    Today we are riding the Blue Line. This 14 mile line opened in 2004, and it connects the Mall of America (the largest mall in the US) with MSP Airport and downtown Minneapolis.
    Find out what it's like to ride the Metro Blue Line and come along with us!

      Is it viable to go to the Mall of America during a 3 hour layover?

    • @AustinSersen
      @AustinSersen 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@aaronerickson6845 Absolutely. I had about a 5 hour layover recently and stopped by the Mall of America, made it part of the way to Downtown and decided to walk for 40 minutes, and went to Minnehaha Falls. You could definitely do the Mall on a 3 hour layover, and possibly also fit in Minnehaha Falls (totally worth it, takes about 30 minutes from getting off the train to seeing the falls in a 10 minute walk and then getting back on).

    I lived in Downtown Minneapolis and am a flight attendant, so work out of MSP. Because of the Blue Line and living downtown, I was able to walk/bike/ or ride the train anywhere I needed, so I lived without a car for 6 years. I saved so much money from taking the Blue Line I was able to buy my first rental property in Summit Hill, St Paul. Im living my American Dream. Thanks for visiting my state, hope you had a good time!

    Living in northern Iowa, the Twin Cities is the metro area closest to me, so I've ridden Metro rail more times than I can count. It's not at all unusual to have loud and often crude passengers on the trains in the Twin Cities, though they're usually more plentiful on the green line than the blue. This tends to be a problem in all cities that use "honor system" ticketing. (Like you, I've also experienced it in Portland, and in Seattle, Sacramento, and Los Angeles, too.) I've experienced it much less in Chicago, and I think the turnstiles do tend to keep some of the more marginal passengers off the trains. While I try to have compassion for everyone, it can be a challenge when people are vulgar or violent.

    • @Thom-TRA
      @Thom-TRA  ปีที่แล้ว +12

      I’ve always wondered what the advantages are of proof of payment, other than it being nice for railfans like me haha. I mean, sure it spares capital costs of installing turnstiles. But does that really outweigh the losses made by fare evasion?
      Thanks for your comment! I was hoping you’d enjoy these videos, since you live relatively close by. Always a pleasure hearing from you.

    That bell sound you hear at 8:05 is not actually the train's external warning bell - it's the chime that plays before PA announcements to get people's attention. But yes, the trains do in fact have both a horn and external bell. Most American LRVs do.

    The one thing I was shocked by was the bus service - I took 83 from Green to Como Zoo & was picked up by a regularly scheduled mini-bus that only held about 20 people.
    Guessing its a slow route, but they still want to provide service coverage - overall, impressive coverage of the bus network.

    One more thing, the station map ladders were in the process of being replaced in August. The new thinner line map is the updated version, many people confused the Red Line as rail, so they moved to a map that is only rail with the BRT connections listed at appropriate stations.

    Thank you for the video Thom. It looks an interesting system and well used along with the BRT's. It's a neat idea of the 24hr service at the airport. It's nice seeing the system being expanded albeit delayed. 🙂

    From my visit, overall, I was happy with the service and found that both lines served key areas. Being street running provided some better proximity to POIs - there's ~4 stops in/near UMinn (that likely get a lot of business), the downtowns, the airport, Mall, etc.
    I found most traffic lights had reasonable prioritization - only twice did I have notable waits for the light to cycle back around, and the other light waits were very brief. Downtown M & SP stations were unfortunately disgusting, but other stations were in good order.

    I had a layover at MSP recently, and was also surprised at how unsafe the blue line felt. As soon as I boarded, there was a self-proclaimed homeless guy (younger than me, maybe 20-25) singing at the top of his lungs and banging on the plexiglass. The Bombardier vehicle also smelled terrible. Social issues in the USA run deep and I'm not optimistic that it will turn around in my lifetime.

Hope to spend 3 days in Minneapolis (great to see it has a good transit system) & a few more days in Milwaukee so as to also visit Green Bay & Maddison (by my least preferred mode of transport - Greyhound buses! since Amtrak does not run any services, disappointing given Maddison is a state capital). Can't believe you went to one of the world's largest shopping malls & didn't go with Lindsey. I hope you bought her an appropriate gift? My son went to Minneapolis in the winter a few years ago - he reckons it was the coldest place he has ever been (he spent 6 months in Ottowa Canada previously & thought it was the coldest only to be surpassed by the twin cities). The bells only stay on while a train is anticipating crossing the road (i.e. when they leave the station). If they cross the road before a station, they turn off pretty quickly. Multiple Green line stations are catty-corner so both platforms are past the crossing.

    I recently stumbled across your channel, and I was humbly surprised to see a video on the Metro Transit Blue line, as I live only a short walk from US Bank Station. I also try to use publics transit whenever possible. I do enjoy the service of both the green and blue lines, but neither are perfect.
    in my opinion, the Green line between downtown St. Paul and Minneapolis show really be considered a glorified bus line. I say that because it was built as a replacement for the busiest bus line in the Metro Transit system, and therefore has very frequent stops along its line, thus it takes about 45 minutes to get from US Bank Stadium station to get to Union Station in St. Paul. If you are visiting the twin cities and need to get between the each downtown, just take the 94 bus, which only takes about 20 minutes to do roughly the same journey. Otherwise, it is a great connection from downtown Minneapolis to the University of Minnesota Campus. It runs through the middle of the campus with stations serving both the east and west bank of the campus! The green line currently has an extension project that is under construction to take the line southwest from the target field station to Eden Prairie, a suburb of the twin cities. Unfortunately, many of the stations on this line will dump people right into car dominated suburbia. The Eden Prairie station is going to be located at a park and ride bus terminal.
    On another note, the incredibly vulgar conversation on the blue line is pretty... tame compared to some of the things I have witnessed on either the blue or green lines. I have witnessed muggings, knife fights and many other things. Unfortunately, these incidents might as well be a daily, sometimes hourly occurrence, and these incidents are usually gang related. The Green line in particular, west of the state capitol and east of the U of M, runs through a few different areas that are "run" by separate gangs. They do not get along very well. The blue line does something similar, and so you can easily see why there might be so many incidents on the Light Rail of the Twin Cities. My suggestion to anyone visiting, don't ride alone, especially at off peak hours or after dark.
    Another part of the issue with public transit in general in the twin cities is its limited reach outside and it simply cannot compete with how much faster driving a car is compared to public transit. The Twin Cities has a fairly well gridded highway network that has a few choke points (The Lowry Hill tunnel of I-94 being one of them) and most places in the suburbs are simply not reachable by metro transit. Some other areas have their own agency known as the Minnesota Valley Transit Authority, but this has a very limited ridership potential as it mainly serves sprawling suburban single family housing as well as park and rides.
    I may have gotten lost and started ranting, but overall, I like the service, but very few sane people actually ride the light rail consistently.
    (edit: I fixed a few punctuation and spelling errors.)

    • @Thom-TRA
      @Thom-TRA  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That’s sad, the state of the metro as you describe it. I think the Twin Cities should make their transit closed to anyone without a ticket. People should feel some sort of security when they’re riding transit.
      I appreciate your insight. Sounds like your home still has a lot of work to do regarding violence. My city of Chicago is the same way. Hopefully we can work and look forward to a better future.
      Thanks for the comment! Feel free to write long, explanatory stuff anytime!

      @timothymbonham4453 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, the light rail here is dying, due to the safety issue on the trains. Ridership is so low, and dropping, despite heavy taxpayer subsidies -- hiring an individual taxicab for every rider would be cheaper for the taxpayers. Doesn't help that they've been cutting back on the hours of operation.
      I live only a few blocks from a station, and a few years ago when I worked downtown, I rode the LRT to and from work every day. But I would never do so anymore -- just not worth the risk. It's become more of a moving shelter for homeless people, druggies shooting up or nodding off, or a gangster thugs hangout. More of that than transit riders.
      The MTC makes no significant effort to enforce the ticketing rules, the behavior rules, or any rules on the LRT. Almost nobody bothers to pay. Why bother? And displaying money at those ticket-purchase kiosks is an invitation to be mugged.

      Oh the things I’ve seen on the train…. from naked people to people blatantly smoking crack to fights… once, in college, someone reached across me to punch my friend in the head, then ran off the train. They really need to up security. I’ve heard their transit officers have high turnover because of how bad it is, as well as low pay, so nobody wants to work for them… I know it’s a city and public transportation is always a bit of a crazy adventure but it’s really gotten bad the past few years. I opt for the bus now mostly.

      There are TH-cam videos on the Silver Line to Dulles, but none as good as yours. The Washington Post has had articles about the new line, even a race between one person driving a car versus someone using the subway. Depending of course on where one boards the train, it can take quite a while to reach the airport. This contrasts with the very expensive Heathrow Express (I’ve taken it many times) that reaches London’s Paddington Station in 15 minutes. Last month I used the FEX train from Berlin's new airport into the city's Hauptbahnhof. That took about 35 minutes. The S-Bahn is also available at the airport. @@edwardjones4870 thank you! It makes me so happy to hear you like my videos. I’ve taken a DB regional train from Berlin Hbf to the airport, but that was still Schönefeld.

    • @edwardjones4870
      @edwardjones4870 ปีที่แล้ว

      You may already be familiar with the incredible problems in building BER which caused it to open some eleven years late. Schönefeld is still in operation, now called Terminal 5 and used by low-cost carriers like Ryanair. This was not the original plan because it was supposed to close, but the new airport can’t handle all the flights. I’m curious to learn how you got to Schönefeld on DB because I thought only the S-Bahn has a station there. Anyway, the rail station at BER is, as one would expect, at the lowest level of the airport, and one accesses it via escalators and elevators. I had previously arrived in Berlin at the Tegel Airport, now closed, which had no rail service into the city. I found the signage at BER not very helpful and had to wander around before I located the elevators to the rail station. The elevators go to different platforms. I found myself at a platform just as an FEX train was leaving. The next train was departing from a different platform, so I had to take another elevator up and another one down. No doubt this was due to my unfamiliarity with the airport. Having said all this, BER is a vast improvement over Tegel. That is also true of the Hauptbahnhof. I remember when the Zoo Station was the main station in Berlin, and it was small and inadequate. I hope some or all of my comments are of interest to you. And by the way, I can recommend a hotel in Berlin next to rail tracks where one can watch all the trains going to the Hauptbahnhof, if you don’t mind the noise, that is!

    When you live here it can be pretty convenient for getting from one downtown to another, but at this point it’s still much much faster to just drive. Hey, nice review! I am a fairly frequent traveler on both the green and blue lines and it’s cool to see you cover it. I’ve always been told to sit as close to the cab as possible to avoid hearing vulgar conversations and such but I also saw a group of people yelling and smoking right next to the cab (who promptly were kicked out) but I don’t really know if that rule is really true. I also don’t want to say that the light rail should straight up not serve people (I want to be careful with my words, apologies if I offend anyone. It is not my intention) who may have a mental disability or are struggling emotionally or on the lower end of the class structure. It is important that the light rail can serve people with those misfortunes and help them better themselves and I’m grateful that it can.

    Do you have any plans to come to Washington DC on or at least close to the opening day of the silver line airport extension? This will probably happen early next year but it's hard to say exactly when the Washington metro authority will actually get it going.

    • @Mars-ev7qg
      @Mars-ev7qg ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Thom-TRA there's all kinds of rumors floating around about exactly when it's opening. The latest problem is one of the DC metro 700 series train cars derailed and the NTSB made the Washington transit authority take all 700 series cars out of service until several safety issues were addressed to the NTSB's satisfaction. About 70% of the DC metro's trains are out of service. Hopefully this mess can be resolved soon but until it is DC metro is operating on reduced service on the existing lines and doesn't have any trains to spare to open a new service.
      Anyway there's lots of trains that are running in the DC area that you can check out. The Maryland MARC commuter rail system connects the entire state of Maryland with Washington and Baltimore. This service includes the excellent rail connection from Washington Union Station to BWI Airport. Washington is also the southern end of the Amtrak Acela line. The fastest trains in the United States. Washington DC opened the first trolley in the city in over 60 years just a few years ago. Baltimore has a surprisingly large light rail network that also serves as the city's primary airport transit. On the other side of the Potomac River Virginia operates the Virginia railway express. This service is designed to move mostly 9 to 5 office workers from the outer communities south of Washington to the city in the morning and back in the afternoon and evening. The system has two lines serving Fredericksburg and Manassas Virginia. Finally Washington DC is well connected to many other cities by many Amtrak trains every day. The DC area is definitely worth a visit eventually even if there is a massive delay in getting the silver line extension open.

I generally take the Green Line to Wolves games, and while it's avoiding parking fees, it can suck if I want to go out with friends after the game because the trains don't run after 11:30pm. I know a lot of people who would like to take the train to concerts, but it just doesn't work out with the times. The SW extension is also being built, but they keep running into delays.
