Hi Andrea. It's totally normal to be nervous when speaking, but that goes away, mostly, when you know exactly what is expected of you and you know that you are doing what the TOEFL graders want from you. If you truly want to score 27+ on your TOEFL Speaking test, take my online course where I teach you everything the graders want and exactly how to take notes, structure your responses, and how to deal with the anxiety of answering the questions. You could also take personalized classes with me where we practice speaking in class until you feel comfortable and automatically earn a high score. The link to my website is in the description.

Hi Mr. Hearn, I have a question, if I mistakenly use British idioms instead of U.S. idioms in my speaking, will I take a point for that or would it be a mistake?

Good question, and thank you for asking. Honestly, I've never thought of it, and I don't know the answer right off hand. Considering that British English and American English both use English vocabulary, it would likely be okay. Regardless, the only time you would use idioms at all would be in Question #1, and any penalty would be slight, not interfering with your overall score.

Hello. Love the photo of the green kitten! To answer your question: speaking "fast" isn't necessary on the TOEFL. What you want to do is to know how to take notes, how to structure your response the way the graders require, and to be concise with your answers. Many times, when trying to prove how well we can speak in English, we talk too much. The TOEFL Speaking section is NOT testing how well you can speak in English, it is testing how well you can take notes and use those notes to answer concisely. Just FYI - I have had many students who had low to Intermediate English speaking skills but scored 27 - 29 on their TOEFL, and you can too.
