Sir Michael Marmot on why 'Britain is more miserable and poor' than ever | LBC analysis

  • "Let's start with where we are as a country, and I start with looking at health. Health is pretty fundamental. I mean, what else do you want a government to do? Then to look after the health of the population? Our life expectancy now is no better than it was in 2010. That's dramatic.
    That's never happened before. We've never gone through a 12 year period, with no improvement in life expectancy never ever before.
    Life expectancy before 2010 was increasing about one year every four years. And in the last 12 years, it has not increased the increase was slow. And then it went down with two years of COVID. Secondly, the inequalities in health have got bigger, that's by region
    So if you live in the northeast or the Northwest, the consequences of deprivation for your health are bigger than if you live in London or the southeast. And thirdly, health for the poorest people is getting worse."
    Andrew Marr hears from Professor Michael on the latest in terms of the United Kingdom's state and levels of poverty.

      Austerity was supposed to bring down the debt that Gordon Brown accrued by saving the banking system, which he absolutely had to do, otherwise we would have become limited to only 2 or 3 banks, and millions of people would have lost their entire savings, and would have had to scramble around to change their entire finances to a new bank, and that's assuming that a bank that survived would have been ready, willing, and able, to accept millions of new account holders. In 2010 the national debt was approx £700 billion, yet after 14 years of austerity, the national debt is now over £2 trillion, so much for austerity bringing down the debt.

However, and this is a big however, 'they were still worried about taking a bet on Labour.' What does it take for voters to realise that they have been gaslighted by theses pirates in Number 10? The NHS is an institution that the Tories hate with a passion and they have proved this every years since it was formed back in 1948. Yet voters still trust them with it.

    • @teddansonLA
      @teddansonLA 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      That's not quite true. You have to exclude London from the analysis to find that the UK is poorer than Mississippi. The other clarification is that, terrible as UK public services have become, they are considerably better than those in the USA. So although UK GDP (excluding London) is weaker than Ms, life expectancy, infant mortality and other indicators of quality of life are all better. There's a human development index which measures quality of life better than e.g. GDP per capita, UK does better than poor US states on those measures.

    • @saiyedakhtar3931
      @saiyedakhtar3931 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @teddansonLA Well, it's close to Mississippi. Mississippi GDP per capita is $49,911, and the UK is 51,075 according to the latest figures (this is for the whole country including London). So, the orginal comment is essentially true. Remember Mississippi is the MOST BACKWARD state in America. It does get any lower. So, the UK if it were to join the US as a stare wouldn't be much better than Mississippi. Second, Obamacare is way superior to the NHS. Since it's private healcare paid for by the government the wait times are minimal. Most of Mississippi poor have Obamacare and they get the best private care but the government foots the bill. America isn't stuck in the 90s anymore. It's a way different America now.

    • @teddansonLA
      @teddansonLA 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@saiyedakhtar3931 _Second, Obamacare is way superior to the NHS_
      I don't think so. Mississippi life expectancy (71.9 years) and infant mortality rate (9.4 deaths per 1000 live births) tell a story of deep poverty and neglect that GDP doesn't capture. The UK life expectancy is 80.7 years, and 3.9 deaths per live births is better than the USA as a whole. The NHS has massive problems caused by the last 15 years of neglect, but it beats the healthcare of Mississippi by some margin.
      _So, the UK if it were to join the US as a stare wouldn't be much better than Mississippi_
      On GDP, sure. But on human development index, the UK is so much better. I lived in NM, USA, for four years - that place was great if you had money, but I saw poverty there that I never saw in the UK. So no, the original post is still both wrong and naive.

    Wealth inequality is the fundamental driving force behind the problems in the UK and in the rest of the western world. The number one question everyone should be asking is: "What are you going to do about wealth inequality?" and the blindingly obvious answer is to tax the super-wealthy, and if possible, reduce tax on those who's income comes from doing actual work.
    As long as so much wealth is hoarded by a very small number of people, the situation is going to continue getting worse.

    Don’t forget we are overburdened with generously funded public services. Top council officials, police ranks and fire brigade senior management are these days in the millionaire category taking their pensions into account. The NHS continues to grow exponentially pandering to demands from society that even George Orwell couldn’t have foreseen 70 years ago. Council and civil service departments are out of control screaming for further growth funding for services that we did well without just a few years ago. Until we get real, the decline will continue until inevitable national bankruptcy.

    Sort the ridiculous property prices out by reforming planning laws, allowing way more houses to be built and have a national strategy for it (targeted in particularly bad areas for affordable housing).

Yes debt is frightening but Britain not working is even more so. We don't mind paying if we get for what we pay for....things are properly ring fenced, projects stop wasting our money like HS2 ...went want things to work properly. The UK's problems actually go back centuries. It's a hugely complex issue but at the heart of it is the UK's archaic institutions and, more importantly, the corresponding archaic backward mindset of its government and many of its people.
    The truth is that the UK never had the kind of upheaval and revolution that its peers and rivals did. It was never forced to confront itself and does not have the honesty or bravery to do so now. And so it muddles along with a medieval establishment and an approach to its economy that is Georgian at best. It is not so much inspired by its past as enslaved by it.
