  • Here's Harvey's Grand Prix Test:
    • 265 Amelia & Harvey GP
I just got back from the championships, and I think that it is time to share with you the full story of what happened to Harvey, my Grand Prix horse, who I almost lost earlier this year. I’ve shared bits and pieces of the story, but it can be really hard to share publicly when you’re going through a really hard time. With horses, the highs are really high, and the lows are really low. We’ve all had wonderful times with our horses, and we’ve all had really tough times. Part of what I love so much about our community is that we’re able to support one another and encourage each other through the good times and the bad.
I made a video talking about what happened earlier this year with Harvey. It was a terrible three months, he spent a month in the hospital, and he was so sick. I took the very best care of him that I could. I loved him every single day, and last weekend Harvey won all three of his Grand Prix classes to take home the CDS Grand Prix HOY and the USDF Region 7 Grand Prix Championships.
His recovery truly is a miracle. He is an amazing horse. Every day I get to ride him is truly a gift. He is the most powerful, talented, and kind horse that I have ever ridden. He’s like riding a magic carpet with unlimited energy and power and yet ultimate balance and control. I am so incredibly grateful to my vets, my husband, my mother, Harvey, and everyone else who helped me nurse him back to health. I love that horse.
Please watch the video where I share what happened. I hope that sharing my story will remind you to believe in your horse, to listen to your horse, and to love and appreciate every single moment that you have together with them. Every day is a gift!
    Amelia

Love your horse every single day. If you are feeding them, grooming them or riding them recognise the privilege and gift you have been given. I’ve also experienced hard times with my horses so I absolutely relish every moment. So glad Harvey is better. ❤️

You've hit on such an important topic that many dont talk about. You're so right! The highs are so high and the lows are so low. I recently lost my 22yr. old Trakhner to prostate cancer that had metastasized to his pelvis, urinary tract, and even stomach area. The surgeon at OSU told me this was extremely rare and not treatable. The heart break of letting him go was more than words can describe . Two short weeks prior to this diagnosis , I had brought him to a show where he earned a 65.97% on his dressage test and jumped two clear rounds in his jumper classes. He was filled with tumors unknown to us. It just goes to show how hard they work for us.

I am so happy for you and Harvey! I, too, know about the struggle with a horse's injury. Mine is finally back to full work after 5 and half years of rehab from a shoulder injury from a western saddle. It was awful, including a long battle with gastric ulcers just after the initial injury. My horse was so miserable. She went from the sweetest horse I had ever met to one of the most dangerous. I considered euthanized her twice. For months, she would'nt let me pick her feet, it was hard to catch her and she refused to even hand walk to the right in the arena the search for a saddle that would not re-injure her was so difficult, we did have some setbacks until i finally found one that would not hurt her. This spring, I was able to show her at the intro level, and now she is ready for training level. I can say today she is back to her sweet self when I first met her. It took a long time, but I am glad I did not give up on her.

Thank you for sharing Harvey's story. I went through something similar 18 months ago when my mare Lady was diagnosed with Kissing Spines. She was in daily pain, and I had to do something to help her! After hearing all of my "options", I opted to have ostecotmy & desmotomy surgery done. It was all so very scary, but she was so patient and trusting through everything she had to endure. It was a long recovery, but we're back to riding and even did a few dressage tests this summer. :) All thanks to superb veterinary teams, family, and barn mates! And Lady is much happier, and stronger than ever before.

Thank you for sharing! This summer has been tough on us as well. I was all set to start taking lessons again & was going to learn a new discipline. We’ve had a hard couple of years trying to figure out why my mare just struggled to stay sound. I finally thought we had it figured out but again, we struggled this summer. We just got the diagnosis of suspensory desmitis. 😭 The vet doesn’t seem confident that she’ll ever be sound enough to do the things we want to do. She’ll get to be a kids horse for my boys, but this is the 3rd horse in 8 years that I’ve had goals with that get derailed. The highs are very high, and the lows are so low. ❤

Phenomenal story Amelia, thankyou so much for sharing. The strength of your bond together is really evident. Kudos to you for taking on Harvey's health challenges, investing so completely, in battling through with him, with all your love and money and dedication. Fortunately, you had the financial resources, as money, very sadly, can sometimes be a major consideration. What a wonderful outcome, I'm so truly happy for you. He's a very special horse, it's true! And you are a special woman. Not to the same extent, but I have faced terrible health issues in my horses, so yes I understand the pain and worry. I'm so thrilled for you both, to be sharing your story from the other side of the mountain, from where you can enjoy the rewards together, in good health & happiness & success! Love and admiration to you both ❤️ 🐎🙏

I am sooo happy Harvey is all beter.❤He is a strong horse and I am glad you got through it.😊My horse got bumb on the side of his neck near his face when he was still little at his old owner. The vet said that he think he must probely have drinked poisen water(since he lived out in the mountens)The vet had drained it and cleaned it and after a long time he got better.Still to today he's still got a little bumb as a mark (he is safe and it does'nt effect him at all)But he is very happy and that does'nt stop him to be the best horse ever (and have a cheecky personalty😅)He and me even got a second place a few weeks ago at a show.😊So glad Harvey is all good again!!

I am so glad it all worked out for you! My mare’s poll tendinitis wasn’t able to resolve so she can’t do dressage anymore without pain, but she CAN be a hunter and she’s loving it. The young lady leasing her loves and pampers her and I am very happy I found a new career for my horse that she can enjoy.

My hardest time was letting my awesome show horse go due to lack of acceptable boarding. Too many barn closures. Too many moves trying to find a good place. Too many times finding lack of medicine fed, no water, no hay, no bedding, wet mucky stalls, chewed power cords at pasture, no notification of injury, list goes on.... I had to realize I could no longer be an owner via boarding. I'm overcoming this slowly by saving 1 million down for a farm of my own and riding professionally as a traveling trainer. I gave up my ammy status as I no longer get to show. Here's to better things in a few years.

So happy he was able to recover so well. My horse got a heart infection in April, and it took 3 rounds of antibiotics, and he wasn’t eating, etc. He lost a ton of weight and I thought I was going to lose him. He’s 21 so the threat was very real. He finally recovered but developed a significant heart murmur. Vet said the best thing was to use him and keep him fit. Since then he’s gained all of his weight back, is more fit than he’s ever been and we are having a blast. Love every moment with our horses!!!

Thank you so much for sharing your story about your health journey with Harvey. Our horses own a huge place in our heart and it’s so difficult to see them struggle and know what is the best thing to do for them. I had a long journey with and eventually lost my heart horse to Congenital heart disease and I miss him everyday. So happy Harvey is better and back to his winning ways. You are both so fortunate to have each other. ❤

I am going through a suspensory injury rehab with my horse; after several months he reinjured it (due to a novice mistake on our part). My heart broke; but we are back at it. I want him to get better with all my heart. I must say though that there have been several benefits during this trying time, including health benefits as we have to get out there and walk him every day, which means we are walking too and I have gotten to know my horse so so so much better. I think horses are very resilient. We just have to give them time, that may be months or years. I am so glad you gave Harvey a chance ❤

I've only had my boy for just over a month. He tested sound in the PP3 and showed no signs of lameness until I started working him turning on the fore and bending, which he was still willing to try. After 2 weeks of treating what we thought was a possible abscess with no eruption, we x-rayed him and found out that he had a significant medial sesamoid fracture with detachment of the suspensory ligament. He's going into surgery in a couple weeks to see if there's a chance at a good outcome. Stall rest, hand walking, icing, lots of cuddles, and sitting in pins and needles in the meantime.

So glad he has recovered and all is well. The worst incident I ever dealt with was when my TB mare fractured her splint bone. At first, I was told that she would need surgery, which was not an option at the time. I cried myself to sleep for days thinking I would have to re-home her to someone who could have the surgery done. Then my vet brought up a non surgical option, but it would be a lot of work for me. He injected the site with antibiotics and steroids, and I did months of hand walking and hydrotherapy. She recovered fully, and we later had a great low level career in dressage.
