The OVA covers the story up to "Good Luck," but the ending, in which the FAF escapes from the planet Fairy and retreat to Earth, is an original development. There are also quite a few omitted scenes, and the design and details of the fighter planes are different. The novel version of the Yukikaze was designed a little more like a 4th generation fighter like the F-15, perhaps because the first novel was published in the 1980s.
What's crazy is that the dub voice for Fukai is *more accurate to the novel* than how he was voiced in Japanese. The English dub portrays Rei as being monotone, tense, and clipped with his words, which is practically word for word how he's written. The Japanese voice actor was not a trained VA, he was a live-action TV actor, and his voice is just too gentle and emotional. And the real shocker? The dub was done *2 years before the novel was translated into English.* Somehow they got it accurate on accident.

lol In the novel, Yukikaze never identified the plane as an "Enemy." The status monitor strictly stayed as an "Unknown" the whole time. Rei got hauled before an inquiry committee for opening fire on a plane whose identity he couldn't confirm. The inquiry was inconclusive so he wasn't punished, but Booker privately speculated with Rei that the plane he destroyed could have been a United Nations spy plane that was trespassing on Faery. Unlike the anime, the novel was very ambiguous on whether or not Rei had killed a human being in this dogfight or if it was one of the JAM's copy aircraft.
it was a sussy imposter the super slyph that lt. fukai is piloting is a very rare plane, so another one being in the same area unannounced is pretty unlikely. combine that with its behavior and lack of communication and the only real plausible conclusion according to yukikaze (who is the plane's AI) is that it's an infiltrator unit
JAM can mimic anything, mechanical or organic, like the T-1000 from terminator 2. They even mimic humans, to the point that the JAM mimics have their original human minds and and are unaware that they're mimics. The strategic AIs in charge of the information war managed to figure out which staff were compromised and had them isolated and destroyed by convincing their human minds it was a ground op, so as not to alert the JAM substance mimicking them.
