Joe Dart had a stand alone bass amp, so he did not go through the main board at all and was not recorded. I'm sure it sounded great in the room. This is a pretty common problem when making a recording of the main board in small venues.
Probably was mixed live on the spot for a livestream and done by a second semester Music Production & Engineering student at Berklee who didn't want to be there.

Suggestion for those complaining about the drum mix: concentrate on part of the vid where the drums aren't playing. I realize that's only 95% of the video, but it's better than nothing.
Besides the poor mixing of this clinic, the whole interview is such a gem. I love Joe so much, he kind of restored my whole faith in music and bass when I started hearing Vulf like 3 years ago and was having a real hard time personally. What a beautiful human being and the whole Vulf family as well!!!
It's obviously just a direct recording off the mixer output; there was no way to mix it after the fact. In the room, most of the bass sound would have come from his amp, so the front of house mixer didn't really pick up much of it.
Chuck Silva It’s a part of the curriculum and learning process. We are supposed to load this video into PT and mix it properly before watching and enjoying
Joe is a groove machine!!! With their humor and sound " VULFPECK" got a special place in my heart. I hope they groove a long time. Greetings from germany.
It's not exactly what you're looking for but if you haven't heard it check out Fugue State. It's classical fusion instead of jazz fusion but it's great
Why is the volume so low? I switched tab to watch a video my friend sent me and I forgot to turn it back down. Suffice to say I'm about at the beginning of innovation for I have gone deaf
I'm late to the game but this is an awesome video! thanks for posting. I have so much respect for Joe and what he does. As for the Mix: I've run into this before in small rooms like this, it seems the video guy just pulled a line off the tape out/rec out of the board. they didn't have do a separate mix for the feed, or mix tracks in post. So while I'm sure it sounded great in the room (big bass amp sound, punchy drums, clean full dialogue) they were mixing against stage volume, not for the feed. I've had a lot of good mixes killed by a camera guys..... would have sounded much better to just use a room mic🙃.
5:58 you can see on my profile I saw louis few months back, and when he did after show crowd meet (super chill dude) all I could talk about was how my brain melted when I saw him playing with Joe Dart. It's a good thing you're nervous, you need to excite the photons to make electricity, and that what you make when you play that bass son. You and those big names together maker some of the best funkiest music in history, no doubt.
I think drummers love the perfect note duration thing because of Hi-hat barks. Closing a Hi-hat and stopping a bark at exactly the right time is very statisfying.
Amazing stuff, very insightful, Berkeley's held in high regard for sure. Joe Dart and all his accomplishments I bet would love to have that feather in his cap as well!
As soon as he said “James Jamerson…’ what’s going on ‘“ it all added up for me. I just discovered Vulfpeck like…2 weeks ago 😂 (seriously!) I’m a beginner bass player and when I heard “Wait for the moment” I thought, “MAN! That’s some tasty bass play! Who’s that guy? I want to emulate him! But why does his style sound so familiar and harmonious?”🤔 I spent the next few days listening to that song on repeat, trying to figure out why I gelled with his style. Then it hit me, “It sounds like walking bass!” (Which my teacher has been drilling me on for like the past month) Now I knew why his style reminded me of James Jamerson so much (I had been trying to study Jamerson’s play in WGO just previous to discovering VP). Now I see that Jamerson was a big influence on Joe’s playing.!😄 Back to practice I go

so......any working musician, engineer or stage hand knows how difficult live shows are & how difficult it is too get everything in order for production. Can no one understand that they should be GRATEFUL that this video was even RELEASED for you to enjoy & learn something from?!!? Maybe the DI failed & they STILL decided to give you something to learn from instead of shelving this......?!!?
@@tommydebourbon4192 Thank you for posting this! I had never heard Joe speak before, this was a revelation, and changed my understanding of a lot of things. What a gift!
Working musician here. Live shows can be extremely difficult. That said, a bass amp, a drum kit, couple vocal mics is not complex. It's not difficult to check signal levels before pressing record. I don't see anyone is complaining about the knowledge. The pain comes from trying to listen a fantastic bassist you can't hear, a decent drummer who apparently didn't listen to any Vulpeck songs overpower the featured guest of the interview. To be fair, had I recorded, I would have just cut the music part. Release the interviews only since those were clear and audible.
someone didn't use the *vulf compressor*

He's not blind. But he is mute.
a shame, really
he can see and speak, he just can't smell

"Oh you're here for Joe Dart?! Well here's some poorly EQd bass drum!"
LOL!
So true. Recording bass guitar is very difficult without just plugging it straight into the damn computer.
sounds like it's literally no eq hahaha
The entire clinic was poorly EQ’d (and mixed). And, it’s at the premier music school in the country…..go figure.
Of all the places to have shitty mixing.
Berklee School of music mixing school, ladies and gentlemen.
MANNNN I graduated in 08 and this mixing made sad. Wtf Berk
needs more kickdrum and less bass, I mean it's a kickdrum clinic after all. hash tag face-palm

Jeremiah Fernandez what does it do though
What does it control?
LOL
Why are all the recurring Vulfpeck jokes (aside from maybe bones into cartilage) about Joe Dart’s bass?

Did the drummer do the final cut?
Who mixed this sound? Might as well call this 'some guy on the drums...oh...and Joe Dart is there, too....sort of'.

Yeah the first thing that I noticed was the low muffled bass sound! Such a pity but it is still great to (kind of) hear joe with just a drummer!
snare cinic
This is a pretty good drum clinic!

Yeah that's Joe Dart
Shame you can't hear any of the bass guitar XD
I have never seen a more aggressive head bobber than Sir Dartimus
Drums a bit hot. Can barely hear Joe.
You'd think Berklee would mix something better than this?
Vulfpeck is always saying 'low volume'...they ain't kidding
