      @@Jakefrc The shop at my college was closed when I was working on a project for the schools race car and I had to cut some decently thick stuff, but the band saw in the garage was garbage and took an hour and a half what took my 30 minutes with the hacksaw, it was a good workout too lol.

    So my My dad teaches the elechicken trade at trade school. He has a length of 80mm dia. EN8 Axle Shaft in the shop. When the apprentice in class can't stay off their cellphones, they have to cut two, 1" pucks of the shaft using a hack-saw. Normally after that they rather leave the cellphone at home entirely than bring it to class and risk the temptation.

      @@ASAKLR he definitely grew up in a different era. I think being 72 and still teaching and conducting trade tests is testimony to his dedication in teaching the younger generations, and transferring a lifetime worth of skill.

      And it still shouldn't have smoked. Should have protection. I use my DeWalt for far more strenuous activities than that, and it'll cut off, but definitely won't destroy itself. Junk.

His end-mill is a mite bit shorter than the showcased poster wrench, but judging by how far down the sharpie goes in the finished product, it's only 3" pocket.     As the days grow cold and the nights long. Could you show some love to those machines and clean off the sad coat of rust. Rag off the chips neglect. Some fresh oil of compassion.

    Re the brass chips deflector, I saw someone suggest turning the cutter upside down and running the lathe in reverse. The brass chips then go down not up! :-) Also gives the operator a better view of things.

    One of my favourite shop tools is a reciprocating saw which must date back to the 50s... A very cheap fleabay purchase.
    It's had a motor swap, the jaws repaired, all the safety systems bypassed etc, but as a tool you can leave with a task and go make a nice cuppa, it just can't be beat.
    The crash of off-cut stock falling onto the floor is a useful "job complete" notification.

    The effort put forth for something so simple can be incredible...therapeutic even. Sure theres many other ways to get the same result much easier, but when its for something so dear and personal, the effort is underminded in such a way that it really doesnt matter. This video hit home on so many levels.
