I was at this Evensong live and recall it in my very marrow. Having the "old team" of Barry conducting and John at the organ was truly magical. Sadly John was dead a year later....
I recall the first time I sung this piece. It was at an RSCM summer course at Princeton University Chapel for an Evensong. 200 boys, 50 men, Dr. Michael Nicolas from Norwich Cathedral conducting with Bruce Neswick at the Skinner organ. The golden setting sun shone through the stained glass. It was an epic moment in my life! This composition spoke to me in the deepest of spiritual ways.
Fun side note, Baristow succeeded T Tertius Noble at York Minster. Noble had emigrated to the US and…yes…founded the St Thomas Choir School for Boys in 1919, and he served as organist and choirmaster for 35 years.
Mark, If you haven’t already found them, YT has many videos of current St.Thomas NYC services which are splendid in every way! I see that the transatlantic collaboration continues. John Scott came to St.Thomas from St.Paul’s London, & his assistant at St.Thomas, Daniel Hyde, is now directing King’s College Cambridge Choir!
Bellissimo! I only wish that all of St. Thomas' performances afforded comments. On parity with "Blessed City" was their exquisite execution of "Der Geist Hilft Unser Schwachheit Auf" in, as I recall, Leipzig. When much younger, I was acquainted with some of the choristers and their Headmaster and Rector. Saint Thomas enjoys distinction with the UK's choirs.
Wonderful performance. Someday I may be able to hear the choir in person, again. If it's not live, it's not music, but I do appreciate your posting this recording.
