    During the lockdown period, me and the vast majority of the population are craving to be outside once again.
    In this weeks video, I try my hand at wildlife photography and build a hide and set up in the back garden.
    It's amazing how many different birds visited the set up over the 7 day period and I'll hopefully be able to attract a lot more over the coming months.
    If you're enjoying this style of voice over videos, then please leave a comment in the comment section below.
    Thanks for watching and until next weeks video,
    be kind and stay safe.

    I admire your patience Darren. Not aimed at us ladies with all those DIY skills & tools needed. Sadly my garden is not big enough. We gave up feeding the birds several years ago, as I can’t compete with my neighbour. He has a bird feeding station & many nesting boxes. The birds get through 2lb graited cheese a week, together with raisins,bird seed,sunflower hearts,fat balls & any other culinary delight for feather friends.I don’t think this is an area of photography for me.
    As an enthusiast landscape photographer, I am struggling more than many, because I don’t do macro or intimate shot type photography either. I’m afraid I would not want any of it on my wall.
    You have inspired many of your male subscribers I’m sure with this video which demonstrates what enthusiasm & determination can do.I can admire wildlife pictures & appreciate the hours of patience that has gone into the shot, but not for me. I am beginning to think I am the only one who is not photographing the cutlery, kitchen utensils & any other items round the house. This locked up & a chest infection is starting to get to me.Keep safe & well. Enjoy your feathered friends.

    At 15:15 - I'm a wildlife photo nut, especially birds. As soon as I saw the duck cleaning itself I was shouting in my head *get ready!* -- get as close to water level as you can, switch to portrait orientation, put their head at the bottom of the frame, widen your field of view a little, punch up the shutter speed and wait for it. That stretching up and flapping the water off their backs will happen every single time when they're done with their bath. Well done!

      Morning Donald
      I hope you’re well during this crazy period we’re going through at the moment.
      I don’t think I’ll see the ducks anymore this year, as they mated a few days after this video was shot, which normally ends the visits.
      I’ve set up a new temporary hide in order to get low down shots and this has been great fun (the vid will be out in a few weeks).
      I’m glad your enjoying the wildlife as much as the landscape. It really is good fun.

    I am a landscape photographer like you but seeing what you have done in your backyard has motivated me to get into wildlife photo which I toyed with a while back until I sold my long telephoto lenses. Watching how careful you constructed you outside "mini studio" has inspired me to get into again as we continue to stay home for now. I think I am going to spend some of my money in a long telephoto again and give it a try. Thank you again for sharing such a wonderful video. You have made my day with those beautiful photos. Don't stop. Post more of your videos with your great ideas. I just subscribed.

    Wow what a garden, has all the elements you need, water, trees for birds, places to chill and a cracking observatory. Big tick to the gardening ☆. Really well put together video, love the hide setup, I did hear someone else say poking some wide pipe out hide gets the birds used to a lens being there. That image of the duck with the vail of water over her head was fanastic.
    I think the log would look better if the end was broken instead of cut, could see if you can find any deadfall when walking. Also lard is good for diy fatballs. Looking forward to seeing how things progress. Happy birding & Keep safe

      Hi Jeff,
      Now that I’m using the log as a feeding platform it’s taking quite a hammering and It’s getting quite worn already.
      I know lockdown sucks (although I’m back to work) but the garden has given me so much pleasure over the last few weeks and I now look forward to getting home, cracking open a beer and have a few hours in the hide.
      As the old saying goes “every cloud has a silver lining” and I can’t wait to get down to the river with the camera when lockdown is over.
      Lockdown has really made me appreciate the joys of wildlife photography
      Take care bud

    Absolutely brilliant video mate, so detailed and the voiceover with the birdsong works a treat. Mind you it does help with building a hide when 'I'm just clearing out the shed' results in finding layers of plastic and serveral lengths of 2x4 rather than the three old pots of half used emulsion, a bucket of rusty screws and several boxes of old toys that are in my shed! 😂😂

    • @jefffiles9209
      @jefffiles9209 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree Gary, that was a hell of a shed to sort out, along with summerhouses & observatory, the garden looked a great lockdown space.

  • @erwinslootweg7938
    @erwinslootweg7938 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    As wildlife junkie and photographer: Birds "use" other birds as protection "aid". Crows and their relatives are daring and very smart birds. If they are ok to hang out somewhere, smaller birds know it's relatively safe to go there too. Woodpeckers are birds like that too. When woodpeckers are around, you'll see lots of other birds. When the woodpecker see's you, the rest of the forrest (or garden) in like a square mile will know something is up from it's alarm call.
    About the ducky, some type of birds will get at ease fairly quick even when they see you. if you just go about your thing and continue doing so, they quickly learn that to be the new "normal". common blackbirds have that habbit too. i regulairly have them trailing me for worms when i'm turning over the soil in my garden.
    On the AF area, i usualy tend to work on flexible spot small, it can helps to quickly composite on the "rules of thirds" (or whatever other way of compositing a frame) by pre placing my focus point. Expandable flex is not a bad idea either (and the birds eye-af is nice in that mode). it gives you some more leaway.
    I loved your video and i don't know why i never came up with this myself. Time to start my own hidden gem location like this! Thank you and keep enjoying life!

      @DarrenKnightPhoto  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Morning Erwin,
      What a fantastic comment and thank you for being so detailed.
      Like you, I now mainly shoot flexible spot small and occasionally expand flexible spot, but to my knowledge, the A7R3 doesn’t have animal eye AF which is a real shame.
      Thanks for all the useful tips and great explanation 👍

      Yeah, I think the simple Robin is loved by most people. A beautiful little bird and I’m pleased to have captured it in good light.
      Take care mate and stay safe 👍

    Not just food but also water, shelter and native plants can bring in a plethora of wildlife into your yard. Right now the birds are choosing the danedlions and other berries over my sunflower seeds and other foods.

    Thanks Darren, this is something I have done for years, and I liked the setup you made. For those of us with less DIY skill or just too lazy there is hope.
    If you have a garden / yard setting up a feed and "Stage" outside a window can work as Darren did in his Man Cave. Another option is a hunter's blind which is no more than a camo tent with no bottom and blackout coating on the inner walls. The nice thing is it is portable and you don't need the permission of your partner to build a semi permanent structure.

    Great video. My wife has been feeding the wildlife in our backyard for the last 14 years. She has established a wide variety of birds and a few critters too. We take a shot every now and then when we see something interesting but your video has inspired me to take it a step further. Thanks for the inspiration! Looking forward to watching more of your videos.

    Fantastic video and brilliant creativity. I'm pretty new to wildlife photography and I absolutely love it. Normally it gets you out and about in wonderful countryside but obviously for now it's whatever comes my way in the garden or whilst out on a walk from home. As long as you keep your expectations fairly grounded you won't go wrong. I liken it to fishing in a way, even if you don't get a killer shot it's just nice to be enjoying your surroundings, but then when you do get a shot you're proud of it is so rewarding! I was treated to a couple of Red Kites soaring over my house recently and got some really excellent shots. Just keep an eye out and you never know. I've been feeding birds in my small garden for several weeks now and slowly all the locals soon discover where to eat regularly. I've been contemplating a more natural perch set up and you've pushed me to explore what I can do.
    Now, birds in flight is a genre all on its own in my opinion, challenging but exciting all the same. Enjoy yourself and I look forward to watching your videos.

      @@DarrenKnightPhoto I really like your idea and all the way you went through to get them a few shots. I would like to do the same in my garden however unfortunately is not big enough so I will stick with makro photography for now. Just waiting for new lens for it. Is coming on Tuesday. We all have to survive this time in some way. Thanks for Easter wishes and I hope you're having good Easter as well.
