Matthew goes over the basics of how to play Warhammer 40k.
PLEASE NOTE: Since this is meant for beginners, we have left out more complicated rules such as wound allocation and morale. This is not meant to replace the rulebook, but instead to showcase the various fun things that happen in 40k.

How to play warhammer 40k (what i understand from this tutorial)
Step 1: move the miniature
Step 2: roll 34 dice that require a 4+ to hit
Step 3: take away all enemy figurines
Thanks for this. In my early teens I was into Warhammer, but only ever the artistic values of the game, IE gluing, painting and LOTS of green stuff. I never actually played though, so it's nice to see the game being broken down into digestible bits. And there isn't a single prolonged 'uhmmmm' which is nice too.
I thought i was the only one who spent major $ cash on the models just to build and paint them.
I Just wanted to say how appreciative i am of the fact that you guys made this series, i started looking into warhammer 40k abotu two weeks ago, and this has helped my understanding so much, and made me far more interested. keep up the good work guys!

Great video series. For years I've been wondering how this game works. This is exactly what I've been searching for. Why didn't I check TH-cam sooner?

Definitely go to your local hobby shop if you want some help getting into it. Everyone I have come across so far at mine has been really friendly and helpful. Most players are simply excited to have new people to play with and are more than willing to teach someone.
This video was my first time seeing Warhammer 40k. 7 years of wargaming later I just rewatched.
These videos really helped clear up how everything works. The books are great, but it really helps me to have things explained in practice. Thanks a lot! :)

I just Wished the guys from MWG did a Playlist with all older editions battreps or reupload those complete into youtube since they had the MWG Vault back than and some battreps weren't full on youtube. Some people still enjoys older editions and to watch those is a blast from the past and part of the history of MWG channel.

Yes I know Chaos Space Marines have 2 attacks on their profile. That is because they are always equipped with bolter, bolt pistol and CCW. Space have the OPTION to do that as well. They just have to pay for it. So by playing like that, the SM should all have 2 attacks base.
@ZOMFGpirate I can't remember the page number exactly, but it does say in the rule book that a weapon must fire the maximum amounts of shots available to it. The only exceptions to this are things like Splinter Cannons, Psycannons, Sonic Blasters, things that have Assault or Heavy, but you still have to fire the number after that. So a splinter cannon would be Assault 4 or Heavy 6.... just thought i'd help :)
@sbryans123 No, it simply says if you fire a rapid fire weapon you may not assault even if (for some reason) you choose to not take advantage of the additional shots allowed by your rapid fire weapon you are still not permitted to charge, if i understand the rules correctly. I'm actually not even sure if you can choose to not fire all the shots from any given weapon, like firing 2 shots from a heavy bolter just cause you're afraid of causing to many casualties.
@TwoBladeRanger you should pay attention to the video description where he explicitly said he was ignoring the more advanced and special rules for the sake of simplicity. he was only focusing on the combat for this video.

Yes, the space marine profile has 1 attack. When a model charges (not just space marine, all races) they get 1 attack for each model. However, the person in this video actually made a mistake.. since the space marines are equipped with a bolt pistol and close combat weapon, they technically should have 2 attacks each, 3 attacked on the charge.
Well, I'm no expert since I'm new at this (like 8 hours new) but if you're really bad at dice maybe you can use the terrain to your advantage during the movement phase. Just move behind some difficult or dangerous terrain, stay there and shoot the enemy as they try to close in on you.The terrain will slow their movements and I'm pretty sure that sooner or later, you'll luck out with the dice.

@smackroscoe You might want to take a look at WARMACHINE, not just Warhammer, as well. The rules are even easier to follow and a heck of a lot less units to track per game.
Agreed. Some of them make sense, like SM and IG (why couldn't they from the beginning? Most of the famous battles involve both forces). Others....take a bit imagination of come up with. Oh well, me and my gaming club talked about 6th and we are still gonna play 5th until the transition rage blows over (which there is much less of compared to 4e-5e)
THANK YOU SO MUCH!! hi, im a 14 yr old male and was introduced to this game by a friend. At first i was a little skeptical because the rules were complicated to me. After about two weeks of reading and experimenting with my shiny new black reach figures, i found that the game was very enjoyable. this video series was very helpful and was just what i needed to clarify and polish off my skills. I was also amused by the fact that you talked to the audience as if we were mentally retarded
gogoteca, yes it's the same squad. Squad numbers are depending on race, so the termagons are weak, so they get much in 1 squad.

@sbryans123 even though they aren't firing in what could be called a "rapid fire" attack, they are still firing rapid fire weapons, and so would not be able to assault.
@miniwargaming Though, for 10 points more than a 170 point unit of SMs, you can get 30 termagants with either poison sacs or adrenaline glands.
I'd go for adrenaline glands, personally, because if you get the charge you're wounding them on a 4+ anyway.
Starship troopers was a book written 30 years before Warhammer 40k came out that dealt entirely with humanity's war with various aliens, specifically a group of hostile alien insect like creatures. It fought this war through the use of highly trained marines in suits of power armor. Much of society is depicted as being heavily militaristic and it's clear that the fight against the alien creatures is one of survival.
Starship troopers is to warhammer 40k, what LOTR is to anything fantasy.
thats like saying chess is better on a pc than in real, playing against people in person putting there hard work into effect has got to be a good feeling, ive never players/watched/made one of these but my brother in-law is obsessed!

You need to have two close combat weapons (or a pistol and a combat weapon) to gain the +1 attack
@Vehementi Yup, but that would have been double the points cost, so that doesn't really say much.
@XB429 You can go to the miniwargaming site, it has painting tutorials and a good forum for getting help.
this really saves me the effort of going to the game shop and sit behind all the pretentious veteran players, trying to take notes.
@TheChameleon12345678 if you like hand to hand combat, yes, but the normal units are weak and you need bigger ones to have a good army.

Blizzard actually came up to games workshop back in the day and asked if they could make warhammer games for them as they were massive WH fans, but games workshop were very sceptical and gave them a harsh "no". Blizzard a bit dissapointed by this went home but didn't give up, so instead they cooked up their own version of warhammer40k and warhammer fantasy e.g warcraft and starcraft.
@baval5 I guess I need to tell all the people I play with how it really is then. lol I played in stores in buffalo and by camp lejeune in NC and never have i heard this rule described this way. We always chose to shoot 1 shot when we wanted to assault with marines that had bolters. GW needs to make this rule more clear. U guys might be right though. the more i look at it, it seems to be that way.

Hmm, very interesting. What would be the tactics to minimise allied casualties? I mean - winning a battle just like this one but also saving as many of your soldiers as possible?

The book says that the marines could have shot there bolters. u could have had them shoot 1 shot (not "rapid fire") instead of 2 and that would have allowed u to assault. right?
"DISALLOWED ASSAULTS
Units are not allowed to assault if:
• They are already locked in close combat.
• They ran in the Shooting phase (see page 16).
• They have gone to ground (see page 24).
• They shot rapid fire weapons or heavy weapons in
the Shooting phase (see page 28).
• They are falling back (see page 45)."
He knows because he's checking the datasheet that tells you how powerful weapons and armor is against one another. If the armor has a lower value than the weapon, you can't do a armor save.

Yeah but they don't. Only chaos space marines have 2 attacks standard.
Well i dont play this. thinking about starting making some as a hobby though but you could also view it that every move patton did was a roll of a dice, a plan can be made but at the end of the day you need things to go your way. Many factors come into play and not every plan would be successful even for patton, its a game of risks.
I do believe minigaming is my fav war channel!
@CSMason26 the sergeant has 2 attacks because he is a veteran... he has 2 one handed weapons (pistol and chain sword) so he has 3 ... and when u charge in ur turn u get another one --> 2 + 1+ 1 = 4

the "ant hill" terrain looks sweet
at one time i played with tau and i could have shot those space marines from ware i started with 27 in shot distance after that i would have loaded them up in my devilfish and moved to cover then pop back out when it was my turn again and let my kroot pick up the mess for my close combat

Or taken the termagants with the glands.

I find termagants are only really any good if you can keep them in cover. :p
i think found a new pass time
every person in the squad gets 1 more attack on a charge, however the new rules have changed it a bit
no actually orcs were a peaceful race until the demons came and brought warlocks which replaced shamans after that orcs started to get corrupted by the dark magics and waged war against draenei after the slaughter or draenei they started to opening portals for their demon masters. when the orcs lost first war the portals closed and orcs left to azeroth were hiding, captured or killed by humans then thrall came in and brought back shamanism after that orcs won the second war
Is it generally permitted to field both Imperial Guard and Space Marines as part of the same army, as long as the point limit is not exceeded? I ask because both factions are from the Imperium

If my character got BS6, does that mean that he got 6+ to hit or does that mean that he always hit??

The last time I played this was 2007ish. Since when were Space Marines able to simply 'switch out' to bolt pistols?
Nononono, you need them. they are your cannon foders. You will put them in front, so the enemy will have to kill them, but when they are done. the main force that didnt got any hits can attack them while they were assaulted. Giving you the upper hand.
So the marines in close combat get one attack. But because they charged they get an additional attack? I got a bit lost around 4:00.
actually, that would be pretty cool, invent a new game to do with the minitures, sounds interesting, maybe i'll do that
Wait. So if I have "mounted" chainswords and boltpistols on some of my chaos space marines models, they get extra attacks? And those CSM who only have boltguns only get their 1 Attack? or is it that even though the model may be equipped with boltpistol and chainsword they only have 1 attack?
since when a space marine has got a bolter and a bolt pistole? can u tell me where in teh codex/rule buck that stands?

Uhm... Tau didn't exist back then. I'd say that protoss is very similar to Eldar though... You know... The Khala is like the psykers... The High templars are basicly Autarchs... All the ships are really similar, also they travel with something that is really similar to the weblay. Just so you know :)
how do you now that the tyranids cant do armour save when the space marine shots their bolt guns , and can you do armour save when assulting?
How come they got rid of the flame/explosion templates ? speed of play?
@miniwargaming Wait you would have 8 bolt pistols 7 marines and the sergeant if the sergeant had a boltgun why didn't you use it in the first part

try to remind your friends the game isn't about winning, it's about having fun, I often find getting completely owned is much more entertaining!
It sorta seems like MOST of the gameplay depends on dice rolls being good. Which doesn't seem entirely fair. You can have a plan worthy of PATTON but if the dice don't like you then it looks like you could just get slaughtered by anyone who just has great luck. Though this is all just from an outsiders point of view. Feel free to enlighten me.

Ahh crap - even though I claim to know all the rules, I have overlooked the fact that Marines CAN fire Bolt Pistols instead of Bolters! I think everyone really overlooked this, mainly due to the WYSIWYG rule.
No, you can. In the 6th edition, the new Allies rule allows it.

@Vehementi Tau are so cheap to put on the table.. if your going purely Fire Warriors.. then of course you'll fail.... but get a suit in there.. and the nids would go down, and the marines soon after.

I might scavenge some bolt pistols off the internet and glue them on the hips of my Tactical Squad to represent this... and Boltguns from my Bitz Box to represent the Marines I gave Bolt Pistols...
