How can I become an assistant? I’m currently in cosmo school and feel like it would be great for shadowing, learning from their mistakes, and making a lot of what they have to do a habit before I even get out in the field. Do I just go find a bunch of hairstylist near me and contact them asking if they need an assistant? Not sure how I would find any near me though. Would love to hear your advice! 🤎
@@graciyoung3463 Contacting local hairstylists at salons you could see yourself working at beyond assisting would be ideal. This is the approach I took 15 years ago! Today it is a bit easier to checkout local hairstylists work on IG. Start by searching salons close to you then choose your top 3-5 hairstylist and contact them. Start with a brief introduction, your goals and how you will be able to help their business while learning. Then make sure to ask for a 15 minute meeting at their salon to introduce yourself in person. This part is really important. You need to show an effort beyond an IG message to get a good assisting job. I have hired numerous assistants over the years and each one pursued me personally by visiting the salon to meet me. The personal touch goes a long way to prove how committed you are.
This is a hard question to answer because of the numerous considerations that go into my assistant's hourly rate. When deciding what to pay your assistant, you need to account for a few things: experience, regional wages, cost of living and tips to name a few. Sorry I can't just give you a number because it might not be the right number for you. Hope this helps!
