I worked for 21 years for the Walt Disney Company in theme parks and I worked on lots of projects (Walt Disney Studios park, ratatouille... twice..., Marvel show in Paris..) But I have to admit that my 8 months at Shanghai Disney Resort were the highlight of my career! Such an amazing design, concept and theme park! I even met my now wife there! I miss that park everyday!!!

Disney Shanghai is such a unique and wonderful place that I got to visit multiple times. It doesn’t feel anything like the classic Disneyland but at the same time it does. You get to experience how the Chinese have a different view on the characters we all grew up with in Europe and North America. Either way its definitely a must visit especially for the food, shows and the pirates/tron ride, those are next level.
Have you been to the Tokyo Disney Resort? I wonder how it compares to each other. I've only been to WDW and Tokyo Disney Resort myself, and loved both resorts for different reasons.
But there are also huuuge lines. Even if you want to get through the front gate, you have to wait for an incredibly long time.
Living in Singapore, frequently working in HK and Shanghai, I was blessed to have the opportunity to visit both Resorts during trial ops and many times after… I even walked the Shanghai site, before it was demolished. The transformation from sleepy village to Magic Kingdom is unbelievable. The Disney team and individuals who built, work and run both Resorts are amazing people, several have become friends as well. Great overview. Kudos!

Shanghai is the last Disney park in the world I haven’t visited yet. I was planning a visit until Covid killed my plans. Still waiting....over a year later.

Don’t worry. Shanghai Disneyland is constructing the Zootopia land during the pandemic. By the time the covid is over, you will get to see a bunch of new attractions there.
I visited Shanghai Disneyland in 2019 and had a great time! The attractions were amazing, especially pirates and tron. Tron really was great at night. However some areas of the park felt…empty. It is still a new park so I am sure it will get filled up soon but it was very noticeable in some areas. Also the food could be improved a bit but maybe because I am comparing it to my local Tokyo Disney that has great food! I would like to get back to Shanghai in a few years after they have updated it more. Hong kong is next on my list!

@@fatcrruise6508 They were planning to get a lot of new rides into shanghai park in the near future (well it's because shanghai is the most profitable park overseas, so it does has a lot of potentials), so they were leaving those spaces empty for purpose.

I really loved this video. It gives a good insight in how this how process went from beginning till end and after opening. I Went here in 2019 and this park is so spacious and has so many good attractions It is definitely worth it to visit it once! We also stayed at the Shanghai Disneyland hotel and its definitely the best Disneyland hotel I stayed in.

I went there before the lock down, best thing about shanghai disneyland, is you can bring in outside food
It used to ban the outside food but they changed it after a public outrage.

The Shanghai Disney Resort is now 5 years old!
I went every year until covid-19, only because as an American I'm not allowed in because the infection rate of the US is ridiculous. No one in Asia except Korea, wants Americans in. Shanghai Disneyland is a total success because it payed off the cost, with a profit margin too, in the first year. No other Disney park has ever done that, even Paris Disneyland still has profited yet.
I dunno, Maybe Taiwan will let us in?

I plan to eventually get to Shanghai DL, as I am trying to get to all of the parks. I just have Tokyo and Shanghai left. Yeah, the entrance is pretty disappointing and it needs more. They should have at least put a train there as an homage to Walt. Hopefully one can be put in at some point. What a theme park without a train.

My father worked for Disney at the time this park opened. He basically had to help the team in Shanghai with setting up all their phone lines and computer servers. I remember 1 week where he didn't sleep for like 35-48 hours because they had to finish work before the park opened

Actually WDW borrowed seven dwarves mine train and not the other way around. It was designed for SDL but was incorporated after Tom Staggs complained about the lack of attractions for boys in the new Fantasyland expansion in the Magic Kingdom.
Iron Man, Transformers, Snow White, all great “boy movies”.
the train was removed because Chinese people don't like bored and dull attractions. I watch this from beyond attractions from disney +

I’d like to see the Hong Kong and Shanghai Disney Resorts to have a second gate theme park and even a DisneyTown style RDE district for the Hong Kong Disneyland Resort as well as more attractions that were planned but scrapped added back in for future expansions!

Interesting video, the relocation of a whole village, very literal translations of attractions "Enchanted Storybook Castle" "Flying Elephant" etc, and over all new things too. I like it, and at those prices if I happened to be in Shanghai for whatever reason, sure I'll spend a day there at least.

Shanghai have new rides like tron and pirates of the Caribbean and peterpan(new animatronics , scenes ) that you can’t experience at other parks and soaring which is same as other American parks and they have quite a lot of few shows since 5th anniversary like mickeys story book adventure the 2.0version of Mickey and the wondrous book 📚 （still you need around 2 days to finish every show and attractions)

Shanghai is to experience dark rides that other parks don’t have, if traveling to there why not go to universal studios Beijing as well as its opening

The peony on the tallest tower of the castle actually represents China. There’s a different tower that has magnolia on its top. That’s the one for Shanghai as magnolia is the city flower.

A whole area occupied by thousands of people to be moved due to construction of the a commercial building or government project is quite normal. A lot of people’s hope their homes to be demolished for the (usually but not always) generous relocation package. The area demolished due to a generous foreign company is pretty much the best case scenario for them.
I read somewhere that the Chinese audience prefers walk through attractions over rides. So I guess that’s why they have that one walking one?
The whole park's design is a massive overhaul of what Disneyland is. It is Americana without Americana, a primer to the Disney Brand, and where people prefer to dress up and be somebody else rather than believe in the expression "A dream is a wish your heart makes"...

I expected it to be popular because Chinese people love amusement rides too and just look at the HK disney's success.
If you’ve ever been to Pudong you would know there is very little development in that district and you would also know it’s the largest district in Shanghai. It takes more than 2 hours to get to the south of Pudong starting from the north. So there was plenty of space for Disneyland to be located there and ample room for expansion in the future. Just remember China is communist so people didn’t lose much, they were relocated to newer homes with compensation. Additionally, they didn’t lose any property because you can only own land in China for a maximum of 75 years and most people in that location weren’t from Shanghai and therefore are not allowed to own land in Shanghai.

Been to the park 3 times since 2017 and it does feel very unique although still not as magical as other parks. I did enjoy what it offered but could definitely use a bigger line up of attractions.

So buying out franchises, sucking the life out of those franchises, plastering franchises on rides rather than making new unique ones, and engaging in unethical behavior in both copyright, trademark, and distribution... Is successful?

Shanghai isn’t the most populated Chinese city. That accolade goes to Chongqing with about 35 million people vs 25 million in Shanghai. Why China? Is a question with pretty obvious answers. Huge and rather young population, massively increased average disposable income, plenty of space, increasing popularity of Disney’s intellectual properties with Chinese citizens (China has become the number one movie market globally) to only name the really obvious ones.
This video is more evidence that Disney World is way overpriced.

Hearing Bob Iger repeat the same words Walt Disney used to welcome people to the original Disneyland was uncanny and a bit jarring, even if they were absolutely the right thing to say for the occasion. Speaking of Iger, watching the story of how he interacted with Chinese officials makes me take the idea of him being the U.S. Ambassador to China after he retires from Disney more seriously.
He is speaking the lines from a guy who is a hardline anti-Commie and once reveled in the news that Nikita Khrushchev is not allowed to visit Disneyland back in 1959...
