      Are there ever any issues about who pays the damage? Do you always ride at your own risk at such events? Do people who cause crashes offer money or an apology? I couldn't afford to pay others.

    Thank you! I went to 2 local bike shops with a 26” wheel that was less than this and they wouldn’t even touch it. I bought a spoke wrench and came home and did it myself. I just called both shops and told them it’s fixed and they might want to hire some different mechanics because I’ve never fixed a bike before and was able to do something they couldn’t. • @mauro12mdp
      @mauro12mdp 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      If they had to charge you for fixing a really badly bent wheel it could cost you more than buying a new wheel. Then for liability it can be better for both the shop and your pocket not to take the bike. Cause let's assume they take your bike and fix it. Then the funny tension on the spokes gets screwed again, then you would have to pay again for the same job, or complain. Lot of wasted time and money. It could be worth it only if the wheel is really expensive. Otherwise do it yourself or forget about the wheel

    You can use a set of vices with an inverted fork beneath and between them. Put a good wheel on the fork to calibrate and lock it then put the bent wheel on and as you find a bent area, turn to the top of the roll and strike the rim on the high side with a rubber hammer. We did this as kids because we could not afford a new rim. We have saved countless rims that most folks would have tossed.

    That's almost just what I did to my front 29er. I brought it to a local bike shop and the guy almost completely straightened it. Good for now. Here's a tip: If the tire is off the rim and you are looking directly at the end of the spoke where the spoke nut is, clockwise tightens the spoke. (Righty tighty, lefty loosie.) With the tire off, a flat blade screwdriver can be used on the spoke nut for the bikes I have fixed. If you use a flat blade and slip while tightening, be sure you don't create a sharp burr that may cut the tube. Take it down with a file. Then cover it with one of those rubber strips or in a pinch, run electrical or even masking tape around the rim several times to cover the nuts.

      @@amff7542 Sorry, I cannot. If you remove the tire and the rubber protection band you will see the top of the spoke nuts. The ones I have worked on have a slot for a flat blade screwdriver. This video uses a spoke wrench, but you can use a flat blade screwdriver if you remove the tire. Try it. It's much faster if you don't have a spoke wrench. One full revolution will move the rim a lot. So, try 1/2 rev. at first.

    Danny, assuming this is a ALLOY Rim, better to have deflated the tire and placed the high spots btw. #2 2"x 8" blocks of wood on a hard floor and had a friend stand on the other side on opposing sides of the rim next to the wood blocks as you 'pushed' down on the high spot straightening the wheel back in place with your foot 1st. You may have had to loosen the spokes on the deformed portion of rim 1st. Also buy a Park Tool TM-1 Spoke Tension Meter. Yeh it's $80 but you ALREADY spend a FORTUNE on your Bikes anyway, to the tune of AT LEAST 1 Avg. priced New Car's worth of Bikes and Spare parts in your collection. The spoke tension meter will TELL you when you straightened the rim out instead of the spokes 'settling in'. 'Truing' the spokes to 'Bend' the rim back in place just creates an EXTREMELY out of 'Spoke Tension Balance' Wheel. Riding a Bike with spoke tension all over the map is a BAD IDEA! The wheel can 'Taco' while you're riding it. Do you LIKE your natural teeth? No offense but this is NOT one of your better videos. I DO AGREE, that wheel IS repairable and should hold up well if REPAIRED RIGHT! No offense and Love your Channel Btw. Danny. MOSTLY Great content. This one is a RARE Exception.
    PS - Don't feel bad, even a lot of PRO CYCLISTS are half asked at wheel maintenance.

    You know what Danny? As a xperienced mechanic you should try that in depth treatment from the beginning. To achieve, your "super straight" trueness, you know what you should have done...strip down this wheel to the bare rim...gently bend those high spots to its original shape. As perfect as possible. Then laced it. Sure, what you achieved with your wheel wasn't bad from safety stand point but that high spots are still visible. Though it won't brake up on the trail but it won't be a looker anymore. At the end, Passionate rider won't accept riding on a bike which wheel woobles.

    I've dealt with wheels that are that screwed up, how he's doing it is not even CLOSE!
    TOTALLY disassemble the wheel and deal with just getting the rim as flat as possible, you can't do that with an assembled wheel.
    Once you get it flat, rebuild the wheel.
    There's a good chance that some of the spokes and spoke nuts need to be replaced because they might be stripped.
    I've been dealing with wheels to the point that I even have a tool to measure the tension on the spokes, you can't get a more balanced wheel than that.

  • @nicodanger13
    @nicodanger13 5 ปีที่แล้ว +11

    I'm an expert in recycling scrap bike parts and i can say that this is not the right way of redeem this rim. First you have to loose the most tight spokes, then you have to straighen up the rim by placing it on wooden heels and pushing with the weight of the body to make it almost straight, then, finally, you must true it the way you show.

    The rim is bent. This is not a safe fix. This would be a trail fix but not a permanent solution. Get a new rim and rebuild the wheel. It will save you some time altogether and the wheel would be straight with even tension on all spokes. And when you truing the wheel, when you have it straight, put it on the floor and apply the pressure all around the wheel on both sides just like you tried to straightened it in the video. It will simulate the riding forces on spokes so you don't have to ride your bike after each truing. Repeat until you get the straight wheel - so you have it on the floor, applying pressure all around, put it in the true stand or the bike and you don't have to do any further truing (or just tiny tweak on 1-2 spokes could be done). Then you will have the wheel which will last, considering you have put the proper tension on all spokes. :)

    • @martinbila
      @martinbila 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      As Zoran said, this is not a permanent fix - You can true damaged/bent rim - but the result will be very uneven spoke tension, which will lead to short-lasting fix only

  • @NinjaRastaMon
    @NinjaRastaMon 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Like you did with your hands you may need to use more force in the proper spots with your feet, or with two hands placing the bend directly on the beam. I have dual wall trail racing rims, hit by a truck and folded the back rim. after stepping on it lightly it revealed the true bend where i had to spring my knees giving all my weight to compensate for the force of the truck hit. It is now much straighter then yours and I am going to try a bit more maybe and continue with your tighten spokes and riding until I can use the brakes again

The best solution (which is also a very good trail side solution) is to smash the wheel on the floor (hard) where the rim is bent. That will make the rim much more straight and after that you can do some fine truing, but the spoke tension will be much more even.

    • @BowlGOfficial
      @BowlGOfficial 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      i have a solution for that, but it has a chance of getting your wheel out of true (in the way of getting an 8)
      1. Remove your tyre/tube/rim tape (basicall the rubber and plastic parts on your wheel)
      now you can see the that your spoke nipples can be srewed in and out with a flathead screwdriver. Use this for a measurement. make all spoke nipples have the spokes be inside the same length. it takes some time to adjust. then equally tighten them a quarter turn, which should make the lenght between your rim and every spoke to your hub the same, since they are all equally deep inside the spoke nipples. some spokes might be very tight and some are loosened, but you shouldnt have an egg shape anymore. you can then continue to true the wheel (which might have gotten some eights) and repeat that about 2- 5 times. depending on how accurate you want it. If you are unsure, you might better not do it, since i'm just a 15 year old german who might not be the best at describing a process like this. *and please dont sue me for those instructions if it might have not worked

    • @ministryoftruth8588
      @ministryoftruth8588 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      To answer your question ... Yes ... You are a Clyde and Clydes THRASH machine built wheels! I mean no offense. Bicycle wheels and Bikes are NOT designed for your weight and machine/computer built wheels DON'T have 'spoke prep' applied to the spoke threads during assembly, so the nipples tend to loosen up, which is SHODDY assembly/quality control practices and UNACCEPTABLE IMHO! I LOVE cycling but I have MANY Pet Peeves about how Bikes are built today. Keep in mind being a Clyde you NEED to learn how to tru/tension your own wheels, become a proficient Bike Mechanic and you NEED to buy and set up your Bikes according to your MUCH heavier weight. That means FORGET Bike/component weight and FOCUS JUST ON DURABILITY! At your Weight buying a sub 10kg. Road Bike or Sub 14kg. MTB is POINTLESS and will just be MORE Dangerous and more Expensive and provide Zero Performance advantage! MINIMUM spoke count for your weight is AT LEAST a 32 spoke Rear, 28 spoke Front wheel with MINIMUM 14g or 14/15 db spokes and ALLOY rims (Not Carbon), preferably double walled. And your Tires MINIMUM 28mm Rear/25mm Front but PREFERABLY 32R/28F or 32R/32F. If you opt 28R/25F tires you need to pump them up to MAX pressure so make sure they are rated to at least 120psi. A lot of Road Bikes just don't have clearance for larger than 28R/25F tires! After ENSURING the wheels (Especially Rear) have JUST the right amount and even tension and are tru/dished correctly, drip BOILED Linseed Oil (BLO) into the threads of each spoke nipple, then spin the wheel forcing the oil into the threads by centrifugal force. This works as a 'Thread Locker' so your nipples won't loosen. The beauty of BLO is it doesn't completely dry so it allows easy future adjustment of the spoke nipples but has JUST the right consistency to still keep the nipple from loosening even after several future wheel truings.
      You NEED to think like a handicapped person who drives and has to modify his car. Ask yourself the question "Which parts on my Bike MIGHT break due to me being a Clyde?". That means NO CARBON Components: No Carbon Railed Saddle, Carbon Seatpost, Stem, Handlebars, Wheels and make sure your Bike has an ALUMINUM Fork Steerer Tube NOT CARBON. Forget Carbon and Buy an Aluminum Bike with a BEEFIER Carbon Fork (again) with ALUMINUM Steerer Tube. Maybe buy a STEEL Bike. Make SURE the seatpost is THICK Alloy! It can snap, especially if you have long legs exposing a lot of seat post. Steer AWAY from compact frames and DO NOT buy a 1 size smaller frame Bike. DON'T buy ANY ' Lightweight' Components ... PERIOD! Your LIFE depends on this! And DON'T pork up over 300 lbs. because these circumvention tricks may not even work at that heavy a weight. The good news is there's a LOT of less expensive Sub Entry level Bikes (under $800) that are alloy and have STRONG BEEFY Frames and components with 32 spoke wheels standard. All you may have to do is swap the stock narrow saddle and tires, put decent brake pads and pedals on it and replace ALL the spokes on the Rear wheel (1 by 1, 1 at a time) and tru/dish/tension the rebuilt rear AND the front wheel. These cheaper bikes tend to have crappy quality spokes and the machine built wheels: the spoke tension/tru/dish is all over the place. You may have to make do with generic or Tektro brakes, a square tapered crank and 8 speed though. Shimano Claris is quality stuff and on the closer to $800 Bikes the Generic components aren't too bad. It's almost like they built the Sub Entry Level Bikes for Clydes anyway, minus the 23mm tires and saddle sized for a 98 lbs. Weakling. The Sub entry level MTBs seem to have wider heavily built saddles and thick/beefy knobby tires and better spokes and really just need decent pedals, that's all.
      You're gonna save A LOT of money being a Clydesdale Cyclist. It simply won't be SAFE keeping up with the Carbon Weight Weenie Joneses and their Bling Bikes. Sometimes there are ADVANTAGES to being Overweight!
      PS - Buy a Park Spoke Tension Meter 'TM-1'. About $80. YOU NEED IT! Think of it like a 'Handicap Medical Expense'.

    The rim is bent and the spokes will never have same tension since they are fighting to keep the bent part under tension to appear true.
    The key is to straighten the rim. I suggest several stages of adequate measures from the less intrusive but not the best result to the best result with more actions.
    So at first you can lay the rim flat on the ground and step on the high spots and the spokes will help it get back close to true. (after a drop from a wheelie on old box Al rims of a road bike the wheel was majorly tacoed. just stepped on it in the right direction and it got me home.)
    The next stage is after you straighten it in the first step, release tension from all spokes until they are really loose and find a table with a hole in it (or two 2x4's to rest the edge of the rim) so you can lay the rim on a surface to see how much is deformed and try to lever the rim to make it even straighter when no tension is applied to it from the spokes.
    Third stage is to remove all nipples and get the rim bare an lay it on a flat surface and lever it in wide sections to make it straight (stepping on it on the edge of a kerb or similar works decent, or lever it with some 2x4's - check the IBM from bikeman4u ) - check for any cracks. If the rim is true in resting position and not twisted and circular and not oval.. then the spoke tension will be more even and won't have to fight a bent rim and is as good as it gets.. but for sure the rim will be weakened and not to be trusted in racing and DH and FR, DJ, and other harsh riding.. for the city bike can be fine for many years to come (especially on singlewall steel rims can get like new)
    But in real life if the rim is bent and you went so far to remove the rim, might be a good idea to replace the rim.

      @@sethkinnear7209 I had to order a spoke wrench but I took the front wheel off and tried flattening it out with my hands which helped A LOT. The looser spokes became a little tighter, and the really tight ones slightly looser. I think a bit of further tightening with the spoke wrench should do the trick. If this happened to me and i had no way to get a new one or must have to use this same rim for aesthetic appeal. I would completely disassemble the wheel. Took the bare rim, position it over a good rim to see exactly which side of the the rim should be pushed up or down then get a 4 inch thich and almost 2 feet long plywood, position it on the ground such a way that i can use my hands to press the two sides of the rim and bend it back to original shape or close to original shape as i found at least 80% trueness at this stage would be enough to give you a perfect round and trued wheel at the end of this operation. When your bending work ends, you simply relace the spokes and true it just like a regular rim. Trust me your wheel would look just like brand new. As, what you have done now, it has clearly visible that though you retain some lateral trueness but your radial trueness or roundness gets way off the mark. In every rotation the vibration it would generate is too much for a nice bike. At this stage your wheel spokes tension are uneven. And you know how quickly a unevenly tensioned wheel go untrue overtime.

    • @mikeljhonson8959
      @mikeljhonson8959 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      And one thing, you suggest tighten one side as well as loosen the immediate opposite side. But if you do this for every small adjustments It would actually kill your wheel roundness super quickly. As most of time one sided tightening or loosening would be enough, if the deflection is not huge.

But yeah, I've seen ppl do stuff like that, for example flip the front forks to shorten the wheelbase.

    Great Video but to fix this Wheel CORRECTLY you need a Spoke Tension Meter. Just buy one ... you're probably blowing a ton of $ of Bike Stuff anyway. A Park Tool TM-1 can be found btw. $50-$80 or a Chinese knockoff for $20-$30 (Which are actually almost as accurate as the Park TM-1 and can be found on Amazon or Ebay). "Guestimating" Spoke Tension by "Squeeze/Feel" or "Tone" (Like a Guitar or Piano String) just doesn't cut it.
