- Icheri Sheher, Baku, Icheri Sheher walk.
Icheri Sheher Fortress - Baku Acropolis.
"Baku Acropolis", "Old City", "Inner City" - as only this unique historical ensemble located right in the center of Baku is not called. "Icheri Sheher" is the heart of the city. It is in this place, on a hill by the sea, that ancient Baku was born.
Icheri Sheher is the oldest residential quarter of Baku. In 1977 it was declared a historical and cultural reserve, and in 2000 it was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List.
Very often Icheri Sheher is called a fortress, as it is surrounded by a well-preserved fortress wall. People lived on the territory of Icheri Sheher in the Bronze Age, and by the VIII-XI centuries it was fully populated.
We continue our virtual walk around Icheri Sheher - Behind the dilapidated fortress walls there are many unique monuments: Shirvanshahs' palace complex with tomb, divankhane, mosque; "Giz galasy" ("Maiden Tower"); mosques and minarets, remains of caravanserais, baths. The buildings of the old fortress have a special character. Due to the lack of territory, buildings here have been erected "wall to wall" since ancient times. There are no gardens, the courtyards are extremely small and separated by "threads" of narrow streets, alleys and dead ends.
When in XV century Shirvanshahs moved their capital from Shemakha to Baku, mass building began in Icheri Sheher. During this period, the pearl of the fortress - the Palace of Shirvanshahs was built.
It should be noted that Baku of XVII-XIX centuries did not go beyond Icheri Sheher. Both palaces of rulers and residential quarters were located here. From 1747 to 1806 the capital of Baku khanate was located here. Only after the beginning of oil boom, the city began to grow and went beyond Icheri Sheher.
The fortress wall itself is also of interest. Once Baku had two walls, and they were separated by moats, but in the early XIX century, the city grew so fast that the outer wall had to be demolished and residential houses built. Only the inner wall remained. In it 25 towers and 5 gates have been preserved.
It is said that back in the 30s of the twentieth century there were more than 900 buildings in the fortress, and by the beginning of the XXI century only half of them remained.
Our walk continues along Icheri Sheher.
