~Synopsis~
Using four popular Singaporean melodies as a starting point, Symphonic Suite on a Set of Local Tunes aims to project new worlds of expressive richness and elaboration, applying to these tunes the broad palette of the symphony orchestra. The simple elegance of these tunes provides the ideal foundation upon which to weave elaborate textural layers, lively rhythmic elaborations, colourful tonal shadings and piquant harmonic tapestries, opening up fresh dramatic dimensions that unfold upon a symphonic canvas.
The suite begins with a fanfare, after which the poignant melody of Home seeps in as a quiet whisper and builds up to a grand climax. The joyous energy of Chan Mali Chan takes over and propels the music to its highest level of intensity. The pace mellows with the luscious Bunga Sayang, and the suite concludes with the elated pulsations of Singapore Heartbeat.
Symphonic Suite on a Set of Local Tunes was commissioned by the National Trades Union Congress for its 2004 May Day concert. It was premiered by the Singapore Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Lim Yau. Since then, Symphonic Suite has been featured regularly by the Singapore Symphony Orchestra at venues as diverse as Vivocity Amphitheatre, the Botanic Gardens Shaw Symphony Stage and School Of The Arts (Singapore).
Based upon a core of four well-known local tunes: Home, Chan Mali Chan, Bunga Sayang & Together, “Symphonic Suite” weaves an intricate network of contrasting tone colours, fluidic harmonies, layered textures, dynamic shifts & playful rhythms, and presents a kaleidoscopic & multi-dimensional tapestry of Singapore’s music.”
With international performances by the Singapore National Youth Orchestra at Auditorium di Milano (Italy 2008) and Berlin Konzerthaus (Germany 2012), “Symphonic Suite” extends its reach beyond local shores and to a new generation of music enthusiasts.
交响组曲结合四首脍炙人口的新加坡曲子，运用交响乐团宽广的音乐色彩来展露它们潜在的表现力。这些简单典雅的曲子提供了一个能编织精细音乐层的理想基础、活泼的节奏细节、多彩的音色色调以及愉悦的和声挂毯，体现出鲜明的戏剧层次和交响画面。
组曲的开头是号角齐鸣，随后，打动人心的“家”的旋律低语渗入，然后进入华丽的高潮。喜气洋洋的“Chan Mali Chan”随之把音乐带入振奋人心的意境。之后乐曲放缓了步伐，带入“Bunga Sayang”的旋律。组曲以“新加坡的脉动”收笔。
交响组曲是为2004年全国职工总会代表大会的劳动节音乐会特邀创作的。当年这支组曲是由新加坡交响乐团首演，林耀指挥。从那时起，新加坡交响乐团经常在各种场合表演这首作品，比如怡丰城的广场，新加坡植物园的邵氏交响乐舞台，和新加坡艺术学校。
