Nice post - I always aspired to want a Sony as a kid (I'm in my 40s). Design always looked timeless, great innovation and sound quality the best. I would buy Aiwa (good company!) as that was the best I could afford and then when that day came that I could buy my first Sony (it was the mini disc), at the time it truly was worth it

Honestly, I think this is great. They know that the novelty of a new walkman won't be enough to sell it, so they made it fit for an audiophile and made everything just work. Mp3 players are finally being done justice... Almost 20 years later

Wireless gives u more portability and some form of freedom of movement but at the same time you have to deal with software compatibilty, firmware updates, codecs, pairing devices, battery life, and so on. Using wired things it's just plug & play and start working.
In the audio field specifically, experts say that analog signals are easier to process as well as their ability to represent changes which is better than digital ones.
Think that audio and overall techonology have its fundamentals upon physics. We have developed many digital things in the last 30 years but we have been evolved from analog era for more than a century and not every wired solution has dissapeared yet, so they are still useful.

There are currently many choices in the market for the goal you are looking for. Dedicated DAPs with their own OS. Many brands like Astell & Kern, FiiO, Cayin,Lotoo, etc, do it and give the audiophile experience your pocket can buy.
Sony may have the best aesthetic designs for its products but at the same time the worst quality/price/features relationship. In terms of audiophile products they have been surpassed by competitors many years ago.
Way overpriced items at the half amount of features that its competitors, BUT Sony is a great brand with high budget, so they invest a lot more on marketing than any other aspect. And of course, the retail price include this advertising fee...
