This brother is like my Father and my Uncle. He's like a friend when your in need. He's just amazing. His music gets me through literally. I listen to his songs every single day. He lives on through me. Like everyday I play his music as I lay these tiles and carpet traveling the east cost working these hotels. It's almost like it's the 80's and he's still on tour. I'm only 32 and there was an old vet named Anthony Lambright from Martinsburg WV that put me on to his music when I was passing through and I've been listening to him ever since. Thank you Anthony.

What a poet! My personal all time favorite vocal poet. His album, Pieces of a Man, has got to go down as one of the top 100 greatest albums ever.
If you are new to Gil Scott Heron, you need to explore all of his early work. This is a GIANT.

One of America's greatest poets....living or dead. I've been listening to Gil since the 1970's. He hasn't made a bad record or a misstep in his long impressive career. His record THE OTHER SIDE (A take on his HOME IS WHERE THE HATREDT IS) makes me cry....every time....and I ain't no flower. Him....well into his sixties or nearly 70 telling us about addiction...from experience. Me, on the wromg side of 60, experienced...and addicted, hears the anguish in his voice and I am moved....to tears. Oh Gil, I hear you. always have. R.I.P. (rap in paradise) my friend....my teacher...my brother. Rest well, Someone here on TH-cam once wrote "we stand on your sholders Gil." I, for one , do not....I stand in your shadow Gil, in awe.

God bless the SOUL of a man..."Spirit's say don't give up"...the paradox of giver who never takes is that they give ALL (music)and sadly are given nothing in return except some adulation which is not a fair exchange in context...what a price to always pay for giving to enrich the souls of the rest of us.

Thank you for caring enough to post the lyrics to this song. Gil vocal is great. His harmonizing is great. The man is great. He was too revolutionary for the times
when is early recordings came out, and
"the system" gave him hell. I hope young and older people find their way to his recordings at some point in their lives. He spoke and sang to make the world a better place, but society fustrated his every attempt. It's is out of thanks that I listen to Gil.

This is history and a perspective that is genuine. It articulates a sense of place which has not necesssarily lived up to expectations, is dissolute with it and wishes to be removed from it with progress, where material for that progress however is not provided and so dissolves into a dream, its a moment, dont make it a lifetime, its over.

The true genious of Gil was nut just his love for Black people and our struggle, but his concern for humanity. He was singing about coal miners ("3 Miles Down") and undocumented immigrants ("Alien, Hold On To Your Dream") when they weren't on most people's radar. I felt he was the smartest person I know. Barack is the heir apparent. It's said, If I have seen further, it's only because I stood on the shoulders of the giants who came before me. Stay strong Gil, "You Could Be My Brother"

Gil Scott-Heron, Scrittore, poeta, musicista, militante politico e sociale, autore di inni immortali come "The Revolution Will Not Be Televised", antesignano del rap insieme ai coevi Last Poets e fautore di un sound sfuggevole a ogni definizione, misto di jazz-soul-funky-blues e spoken word

When My Mother was alive she was always trying to get me to listen to Gil Scot Heron, but right after her death I man had a T-shirt and it had Gil Scott Heron on it; only in Motown. I think my mother was trying to tell me something; definitely listening now; !!!! Now I truly see why my mother called me an educated fool because if you don't know Gil Scott Heron truly what are you doing on planet earth!!!

I have loved GSH for so many years I cannot remember. As a white middle class guy from London he has made me very much aware of the ' black struggle. the white responsibility and the fact that colours has no place in the selection of love, hate and harmony. peace and harmony to my fellow believers. ( I love Victor Browns vocals on this track )

@VoodooChile1988 Amen. Sometimes there is a sorrow that celebrates our humanity. Sometimes tears can wash you into gladness and thanksgiving. I love this song too. Gil Scott's gifts will always be treasured.
