Passion for music and painting
In his youth, Christian v. Grumbkow played in a blues band as a musician and designed posters. After he first became acquainted with the music of the Beatles in England at the age of 15, all he wanted was to be a musician. His parents and teachers did not accept this and pressured the rebellious young man. He bought paint and canvas in order to begin turning his frustration into art. His passion for music and painting turns out to be life-long, with painting becoming his profession.
Meditative soul landscapes
Christian v. Grumbkow's paintings are landscape-like areas, often featuring vertical gradients and stripes applied in many layers. He deals with the light phenomena of nature and captures them in his works. Out of a chaos of colors, which often corresponds to the current state of the artist's soul, he creates a turbulent image. Gradients and bold colors become calmer and more meditative as the process progresses. These emotions carry over to the viewer.
International exhibitions
Christian v. Grumbkow has been exhibiting his works in numerous solo and group exhibitions since 1971, including in Düsseldorf, Essen, Wuppertal, Karlsruhe, Cologne (Germany), Milan (Italy), Strasbourg (France), Breda, Amsterdam (Netherlands), New Mexico, Washington ( USA) and South Tyrol (Italy). In 2009 he received the Christa & Enno Springmann Culture Foundation Prize in Wuppertal.
