I’ve always struggled with empathy, at first it was an unconscious need to be accepted and then it became a habit of over giving and not knowing self worth. Now that I am more grounded I struggle with not feeling selfish or discernment of a lack of empathy for not giving in to other peoples needs over my own. Like you I was physically and emotionally abused most of my life and most of it came from my oldest brother, the worst fight we ever had he dislocated my jaw and gave a black eye and all my mother had to say was that it was my fault and I should have never provoked him. Now as adults he is in rehab for substance abuse I am financially supportive but want nothing to do with him and of course I’m judged harshly for that too.
