The Hunza Valley, also known as Hunza Dish in the local Burushaski language, is a mountainous paradise nestled in the northern part of the Gilgit-Baltistan region. Here are some fascinating details:

Geography:
The valley lies along the Hunza River and is surrounded by breathtaking peaks.
It shares borders with Ishkoman to the northwest, Shigar to the southeast, Afghanistan’s Wakhan Corridor to the north, and China’s Xinjiang region to the northeast.
The valley floor sits at an elevation of 2,438 meters (7,999 feet).
Three Regions:
The Hunza Valley is divided into three regions:
Upper Hunza (Gojal): The uppermost part, known for its stunning landscapes and vibrant culture.
Central Hunza: The heart of the valley, home to historical sites and picturesque villages.
Lower Hunza (Shinaki): The lower region with lush green fields and traditional settlements.
Historical Significance:
Baltit Fort, once the residence of the Mirs (rulers) of Hunza, stands as a testament to the valley’s rich history.
Buddhism and Bön were the primary religions in the area, with several surviving Buddhist archaeological sites.
The region played a crucial role in the transmission of Buddhism throughout Asia.
Princely State:
Hunza was formerly a princely state bordering China’s Xinjiang region and Pamir.
It survived for over 900 years until 1974 when it was dissolved.
The state capital was Baltit (also known as Karimabad), and another old settlement is Ganish Village.
British Influence:
In the early 1800s, Hunza played a vital role in the British “Great Game.”
In 1891, the British Empire captured Hunza, and the ruler fled to Kashgar, China.
The British installed a puppet ruler, but the region’s fate was decided by British officers in Gilgit1.
