How I Became a Full-Time illustrator in Children's Book Illustration

- In this video, I will be sharing part ONE of my journey to becoming a full-time artist working primarily in the children's book realm. I explain my mental roadblocks as well as what helped inspire me to get to where I am. This is a very broad overview of my journey so I hope to break down with much more clarity what specific steps, courses, resources and advice I took that made the biggest difference.
For a first video on my channel I thought it best to share some thing about me. As a black woman who is an artist, it means a lot to be able to give back to a growing community that has helped me, so I hope you all watching enjoy the video as much I enjoyed making it.

- How would you find clients to work with online? Would you use an app such as Instagram and then authors would contact you after finding your work on there? Or what website/app did you find that helped you gain traction for your work and begin to make $$$?
- Was it difficult to find someone you could work with when you first started illustrating for authors? If so, what tips would you give us to make it easier to find someone?
- Is it really necessary to go to an art school and get an art related degree to be able to work as a children’s book illustrator?
- What channels/websites do you recommend us to watch or use to educate ourselves on the business side of being a children’s book illustrator and the actual drawing part of the job?
- How much time do the authors you work with give you to complete the illustrations for their book? Are they usually pleasant to work with?
Thank you so much! I’m graduating next year (so really soon!) and I’m contemplating on what career I wanna take on and they’re quite different from each other (teaching, medicine, art) but all have one thing in common: they all involve kids!

Regarding 11:00 - I remember the first time I reread my favorite childhood children's book with the perspective of an artist and one of the things that wooed my heart was how simply it was drawn. I encouraged me so much and I intentionally incorporate that in my work now ^_^

Hi Shellene, I liked your video. I too am a illustrator but struggle with " the business" side of becoming a professional artist so I guess this is normal for many of us.

Hi Genny,
Definitely SVS Learn. Especially, in the long run i found a lot of the advice to be true, or some variation of what was mentioned. Its great for getting familiar with different approaches and answering the questions I had in my mine specific to the industry. Sometimes you are doing the right thing and just need that reassurance if you're on the right track or not.
For a strong general education---Schoolism was and is a great continuous online school that I like to subscribe to freshen up and improve my overall work/style.

Quick question, so how important is finish college in illustration? Is it a big step or just another tool?
It would definitely be a great tool, but not completely necessary if you have self discipline and a strong drive to learn or explore art on your own to develop your own style, knowledge base, techniques, "practise".
