This entire show could just be Seth interviewing a 15 person rotation of his best friends over and over, and it would win so many Emmys if NBC ever found out about it, I mean.
I'd like this to be a tradition. At the end of every summer, Amy Poehler talks about what books she's been reading. So many great recommendations and so fucking funny
As a person speaking fluent Russian with some of my friends, and fluent English with the rest of people, I am sure, that lady in the restaurant was totally listening
Right! I speak 3 languages aside from English fluently in perfect native accents and speak those languages with my other fluent friends when we don't want English speakers around us in public to understand.
🚨🚨Book nerd alert🚨🚨 In case anyone else wanted the titles, authors and time stamps for their Goodreads, here you go: 4:36 Tenth of December by George Saunders 5:21 All Fours by Miranda July 5:53 Vladimir by Julia May Jonas 6:40 A Room of One’s Own by Virginia Woolf 7:57 Excavations by Kate Myers 8:34 Somehow: Thoughts on Love by Anne Lamott 8:58 Little Penguins by Cynthia Rylant 9:32 Catch ‘Em and Cook ‘Em by Bunny Day 10:00 Crime and Punishment by Fyodor Dostovesky Happy reading!
Thank you!! I was just at the same time looking for a new read after I finally abandoned the book I'm reading at page 400. I feel very insinc with Seth, Amy, her glasses, and your post is the cherry on top
the best part is Seth literally just talked about this on his podcast with his brother, about him sneezing on Manny Ortiz, and how much he hates sneezing when he's interviewing someone
Anyone who doesn't believe in opposite gender friendships needs to look at the genuine love and respect between Seth and Amy. We should all be lucky to have a friendship like that in our lives!
Shoot I would be friendless if so. I have six best friends and they are all women! I've had guy friends before, but haven't developed as deep of a connection as I have with my girl friends.
Seth, my favorite English teacher once told me there are too many amazing books out there to waste your time reading something you don’t like, but always give it at least two chapters and never be so stubborn that you’re unwilling to come back and give it another try later in life. Maybe someday I’ll go back and try to listen to Celebrity Baby Teeth again. (No, I won’t)
😂😂 I've never heard of "Celebrity Baby Teeth," and I'm not gonna look it up because I'm simultaneously imagining a ghostwritten Kardashian's pre-K memoirs 🤮 and an on-brand A24 psychological horror comedy movie starring Julio Torres, Danae Guerrira, and Richard Kind...
!! This is a great point. Many things I disliked when I was younger, I took a liking to later. And some pieces of art connect with you differently after a while. You might like or dislike parts that used to have the opposite effect on you.
I love Crime and Punishment, but 100% agree with Seth that bailing on a book is OK. I'm actually proud that I developed the skill 😂 because it felt horrible at first
Yes and yes. I started & bailed on Crime & Punishment 3 times before finally tackling & finishing it. A dense, wonderful, massive book, worth the effort but you have to decide if it's worth the time. And our time is worth more the older we get.
I 'read' (audiobooks) Anna Karenina and The House Of Mirth and The Jungle on some long road trips. Tolstoy, Wharton, and Sinclair. I haven't read Crime and Punishment, but I'm guessing these might be a bit more engaging?
As a reader this conversation is giving me all the feels. 1. My goal is 52 books this year. And I think Amy is on track 2. Like Amy I also slip in a few children's books to keep me on track 😊. I would also suggest graphic novels. 3. I agree with Seth. You've got to give yourself permission to bail out out of a book. Life's too short! And that question is something that you need to decide upon if you're serious about reading
I love her SO much. Set, please just have her as a guest for the entire show sometime. You two together are so fun. I want her book list! Yes, Seth, give yourself permission to bail on a book. Life's too short!
Advice for reading Russian classics: Get yourself a list of the characters and each of their twentyfive different nicknames and formal names. It will save you trying to keep track of all these persons and then a couple of hundred pages in realize that the 75 persons are really 23 persons, but by now you are not quite sure which of them are really the same.
Guys, just because they spoke fluent Russian doesn’t mean they don’t speak fluent English! I bet they were talking about you guys in Russian their whole conversation 😆 still love you, Amy and Seth!
Book Talk With Unexpected Therapy with Seth and Amy should be a recurring segment! I love them talking about real things that interest them (or don't!). Genuinely enjoyable and interesting!
The reason why I love Amy so much (one of them bc there are many) is because she can still be taken down completely by a good fart joke. The reason why I love Seth (one of them bc there are many) is because he can still fire off a solid and effective fart joke.
I love that at 8:03 we see Amy's quote on the cover of the book she's promoting. Probably she read that book in pre-print to give a quote, but it would be so much funnier if she read it years ago, loved it, forgot about it, read it again and didn't realize it was her endorsement on the cover.
In terms of her book-reading pace, she is right on schedule. She needs to read 4.17 books a month. Her target is 50 for the year. She needed to have read 33.36 books by the end of August. She’s at 30 so far.
'Home' has a line where the narrator says "A$$hole answered the door. His actual name was Evan" so I asked Saunders to sign my copy to "A$$hole aka Evan". Amy and Seth are right. The whole collection is great.
I agree with many on here. She should definitely be a regular! Amy was funny and charming, and their chemistry together was a joy to watch. I want MORE!! I actually just saw this on TV and decided to check for it on here.
"even if I'm miserable" reminds me of when I stuck with Wuthering Heights. I still need to go back and watch the old movie to keep all the characters straight.
(Putting this out into the universe) Amy, please drop your list of books at the end of the year (star ratings optional but appreciated)! I’m sure I’m not the only librarian or reader who would enjoy it.
Every late night host just has “their person” that comes on regularly and they talk as if cameras aren’t there and kill it, and Amy Poehler is Seth’s person.
OMG ‘Professor Amy’s Bookclub’ has to become a regular spot (whenever she can spare Seth the time)!!! I expect her soon to be chart topping read-list to come out with its own publisher printed stickers like Oprah’s
Seth, next time you are stacking books, please ensure the spines are camera facing. Fellow book lovers: follow Amy’s lead and read anything by Dostoyevsky if you haven’t yet! The Gambler is a fun little one to start with if you’re intimidated by the heaviness of his popular classics. His work can make me LOL almost as much as these two ❤
It absolutely has to be a tradition now for the audience to stand up when Seth sneezes, as I know he talked on his podcast about David Ortiz laughing at him when he sneezed once
SETH! YES! You hit on a huge economic concept called “sunk cost.” You’ve already spent the money or time finding out it’s bad, there is no way to get that money back but you can STOP. People who stop watching bad movies or stop reading bad cooks are making the economically efficient choice. These two really should do some show together, and Fred, yeah, Seth and Amy with Fred. And random settings but with them being themselves, except for Fred, he always plays different characters, which is just him being himself anyway.
CORRECTION: she's pretty much on pace after August is over she'll be 2/3 (approx. 67%) of the way thru the year and she's at 60% of her goal so if she reads like 3.5 more books by the end of the month she's on pace
i am amy & my moms is seth. moms gives a book 50 pages max. if she ain't feelin it, she moves on. she always says, "life is too short to read shitty books." lol but i'm like amy & feel as though i'm tethered to a book that i start, so i must finish it. 🤣
I feel this. Usually when I don’t finish a book, it’s because I simply forgot I was trying to read something that didn’t engage me in a lasting way. When I’m *actively* considering DNFing a book, though? By then I’m usually so annoyed by it that I end up finishing the whole damn thing so I can give a sincere and well rounded argument as to which circle of literary hell it should be banished 😤
This entire show could just be Seth interviewing a 15 person rotation of his best friends over and over, and it would win so many Emmys if NBC ever found out about it, I mean.

Replying to make this comment stand out!
This is the most genuine conversation I have ever seen in a late night show in recent years.
Absolutely! and some book reviews along with it!
I will watch any clip with Seth talking to his actual friends lol
One of the reasons Seth is easily the best to do it right now.
Love that they are truly such good friends!
totals more than they sum, they are a lot of fun.
As a person speaking fluent Russian with some of my friends, and fluent English with the rest of people, I am sure, that lady in the restaurant was totally listening
yeah, like “sure, no way russian-speaking person IN NEW YORK speaks english” 😅
Right! I speak 3 languages aside from English fluently in perfect native accents and speak those languages with my other fluent friends when we don't want English speakers around us in public to understand.
It's like it never even occurred to them that she might be bilingual. Such Americans.
Right??!! Who knows, that woman might even have been a spy! Or an oligarch supporter of trump!! You never know… 🤨😎
She is such a delight and the two of them are so fun together! She should be a guest every month!
Please have her back at the end of the year/new year to complete her list of read books!!!!!!

when she cheered the sneeze i thought of the mal reynolds line "My days of not taking you seriously are certainly coming to a middle"
cool reference to a cool show
Great reference!
I will up-vote a random Firefly reference every day. Shiny.
the best part is Seth literally just talked about this on his podcast with his brother, about him sneezing on Manny Ortiz, and how much he hates sneezing when he's interviewing someone
Seth: “You’re gonna stick around”. Amy: “Yes please 😊”. Ow my heart I love Amy. 🥰
their interviews together can cure depression, just two close friends having a blast together
Same goes for when John Oliver is on with Seth. They have such amazing comedic chemistry. Always love watching their interviews.
My goal is to make my friends laugh the way Amy laughs with Seth. What an absolute delight.
"One guy trying to decide if its okay to kill people" 🤣🤣Best summary of Crime and Punishment ever.
I just love seeing good friends dunking on each other.
Amy will always be Seth's best guest. The two are hilarious together.
Who wouldn't want to be friends with Seth and his friends. They're all so generous with their kindness and good humor!
I could watch Seth and Amy and Tina Fey just shoot the breeze for an unlimited amount of time, forever. 🥰

Amy making everyone stand when he sneezed LOL. Gawd she’s the best
That was super cute. Is that a real thing people do though? My social awareness sensed this might be the case but I’ve never seen it done.
And yes, she is the best!
Amy looks so good! Fresh, casual, relaxed and fun. Just hanging out with her buddy, Seth
I love Crime and Punishment, but 100% agree with Seth that bailing on a book is OK. I'm actually proud that I developed the skill 😂 because it felt horrible at first
I deserve a medal for making it over a third of the way through Midnight's Children , it would take a dedicated masochist to finish it

My sister taught me that it’s okay to not finish a book. It’s actually liberating now. Especially since I read 75+ books a year.
Omg! I would love all guests sharing their fave or recent reads!!! More please!
