Great demonstration of how to use the cleaning kit per the technical manual. I purchased my cleaning kit and combination tool in advance of purchasing my Garand. I anticipated that I'd own one some day. I never went back to find the procedure to use the kit. This video explains everything easily. I think I'll try out using my cleaning kit finally Thank you for making the video.
You may ruffle the feathers of the "grease only, heavy grease and plenty of it" crowd using oil to lube the bolt raceways, the old adage; "if it rotates, oil it, if it slides, grease it" applies. Also, I wonder how many G.I.'s actually cleaned the bore and chamber in the laborious method you've demonstrated (unless the NCO/CO was present) they most likely just ran the rod brush and slotted tool from the muzzle while resting the rifle butt on the ground. Good video, though, I actually learned something. I have two kits (for M1 and M1A) but neither have the plastic spacers, never knew they existed.
The inevitable, THIS is how you clean a rifle, will always be up for discussion. Additionally, practices and tools of old are often not best practices for today. For this reason, I have intentionally avoided making "how to clean your rifle" videos. The intention of this training film is to be a "how to use these tools" per the TM if one chooses to do so or is just curious.
Well, i tried it, except i had difficulty screwing it in like you did, so i just pushed it in muzzle end, and the rod came unscrewed inside the barrel at the halfway point. Now it's stuck. I guess thats why they said dont push it in.... also, mine doesn't look like yours. It has the screw driver end, but the other end is just a slot, like a flat head screwdriver slot
Brooooo i needed this. For so long I wondered how to use my kit efficiently and that plastic buffer would always get in the way inside the stock. Now i know how to store everything in.
You can also perform the bolt disassembly out from the rifle also using your hands or a small bench vise with soft Jaws or a towel would do the trick. Great video man. Thanks!
@HistoryinFirearms I just got m1 garand 1943 for receiver and barrel and I just got done replacing all the springs, the brand new ejector spring was a pain in the ass worst then the hammer spring
Thank you! I believe the reasoning for that is that pulling is a bit more controllable to help protect the muzzle and you also don't have to worry about accidentally jamming the rod top into the bolt face. The training manual being written for a minimally trained soldier and all.
I found this same cleaning kit on ebay. The chamber brush was slightly too big and got stuck. I had to twist it back out and all the brush fell off the wire

Just remember, the disassembly of the bolt is not nessisary for regular cleaning

I can't remember. Numrich, Liberty Tree, and ebay are some of my go to's for that stuff.
Don't use those steel cleaning rods that screw together. They will damage the barrel crown. Use a one-piece brass rod instead.
100% agree that a one-piece coated rod is a far better option. 👍
I got 1 of these its a reproduction but the green bag has awful sewing job
The originals were made by the lowest bidder and don't have designer sewing either. 😁

@@TorryGood Congrats on your piece of history! Those can be tricky springs. I haven't taken a trigger group apart before.
@HistoryinFirearms receiver is november 1943 and barrel is December 1943 still has most its ww2 parts with danish stock, bolt is march 1942.

Any recommendations on getting a new kit? Ive come across a couple on Amazon but not sure if its the right kits.
I would stear clear of Amazon and ebay is getting that way. I'd go for a surplus sight like Numrich, Liberty Tree, Apex.

Yeah it's certainly not the easiest rifle to field strip, especially compared to bolt actions of the time.
