    Bringing me back, I have a 2001 TJ. I had to replace the fuel pump and rail at 130k. The pump was a pain. But, you have a 4L. Those engines are bullet proof which is why they used them from the mid 80s until the TJ was discontinued in 2006. Not many engines are used for 20 straight years. I look forward to this restoration. BTW, I used POR 15 on my frame since I am from the NE.

    I bought an old F150 a few years back with the intention of fixing it up. I knew it had some rust, but the body was in decent shape. As I got deeper into the project, I found that the frame, suspension, exhaust, and undercarriage were so rusty the truck wasn't worth putting any money into. When a vehicle seems to have "some" rust, it actually has a TON of rust. I wouldn't put a dime into that until I thoroughly inspected the frame and undercarriage.

    One potential option for body rust is to find a donor tub at a junkyard and cut those sections out to graft onto your tub.
    Looks like someone tossed some wheel spacers on it to convert to the 2007-up bolt pattern of 5-on-5”

    • @ironpony42
      @ironpony42 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I thought the same thing. There are too many clean examples to sink your time into rebuilding the titanic. That TJ is properly rotten. I'm also out west, and my TJ is the opposite end of the spectrum. It's an unmodified pampered garage queen, it's treated more like a classic car than an off road disposable thing. It's a Flame Red '05 6-speed Sport dual top with a Dana 44 limited slip rear. I've had it since Feb '06, and it's never been parked outdoors except for a few camping trips. It's up to 53k now in 17 years of ownership. It sits garaged, detailed and waxed, and just runs around topless on nice days here and there. Hard top has a crane in the garage to hang from, doors have mounts on garage wall to hang on, so it's always ready for a breezy cruise. It's always been a 2nd vehicle/toy, and never a daily. I've had it so long, I couldn't imagine not having it.

Regular maintenance and cleaning it up after every ride is the trick. Great video Zac, looking forward to this build,. It doesn't have to be a $500k Lamborghini or a McLaren build, like how you do your videos and talk through what you need & what you're going to do. Also the variation of projects.
    Always had a thing for the Jeep Wrangler , but the huge engine (dear petrol price in the UK) and the build quality always dampened my urges!
    Why do Americans always drive automatics? Everyone I watch on TH-cam has autos, here in the UK I don't know anyone who drives one?
    Must be the fashion?

    • @jeepanimal2943
      @jeepanimal2943 ปีที่แล้ว

      Nope. mommy teaching the kids to drive. Everyone buys an auto because the auto is kind of set and forget. A lot of people don't know the connection a manual transmission gives you to the motor, and road. And then some people just aren't that coordinated. Used to be a Jeep with an auto was RARE! Now, they're way too normal. (Thank the mindless product development departments for that.) And the 4.0 is huge? Really? My daily driver is a 5.9L

    On these jeeps if the battery dies you have to hold your foot on the gas a little to keep it running til the tps relearns I have a 2000 jeep wrangler and my battery went dead and after I charged it I had the same problem with it dying after a few seconds. On the frame you have to cut out the rust and weld the new frame caps in and the on the torque boxes you can buy either new or caps for them. You can buy the repair kits from auto rust technicians they are widely known in the east coast up the north east

    Well done on this jeep buy I think! My '81 CJ5 and I live in Fort Lauderdale, and yes- everything you noticed about jeeps and their owners are true! Awesome project, practice some welding ($120 for a harbour freight mig), some basic metal tools, sheet nibbler, welding clamps, etc. and you'll be amazed what you can do if you don't already have those skills. And if if you like it when you're done- DON'T SELL IT! Ask any boomer who owned a CJ and sold it! Just sumpin' about an old jeep...

    Welcome to the Jeep World! It's could get expensive, but, with patience and Pick A Part yards, it can be made less expensive. That first drive naked, no doors or roof, will make all seem justified. That first drive will be scary as hell, then exhilarating. Frame swaps are relatively easy, I would recomend removing the tub, it does make frame repairs and the tub repairs easier.

    First thing you need is a bidirectional scanner to turn on the fuel pump and check pressure.
    For those pointing out the crank sensor, when that fails it turns off the injectors but still pressurizes.
    So no fuel pressure is no pump power, bad pump, or simply no fuel.
    Also, for you non Jeep people, yes it really is that easy to change an alternator.

  • @luisascencio8092

    The rust makes em cheap cause 80% of cheap quick repairs become a nightmare have to replace 3, 4 or 5 parts more when the repair was suposed to be an easy fix, by the way, tub is junk, tub has body mounts ("body mounts left the group") which are gone about 5 years ago, body is sitting on the air.

    Good deal if the motor is on the up and up. These TJs can be finicky. They really prefer Bosche fuel pumps and the regular cheap copper spark plugs. Same goes for cheap NTK sensors. What rust you see on the outside of the frame the inside will be twice as bad. Lot of work but you can do it.👍

    Jeeps and Les Paul's. I'll never understand. As long as people are willing to pay too much for them, the market will always be there.

    New sub. Looks like an awesome project. Can’t wait to see what you do. If you got Jeep questions I got some answers. 😂 but I’m sure you got it under control. 👍🏻

    A Jeep Wrangler with no rust will sell for about the same price if taken care of. My 2015 jk sells around $25000 and new it was $25000. Now that a 2002 wrangler sold around $16000 new and there is a lot of rust.that is why it was cheap. But if you remove the rust and replace the damage with new parts you should get closer to the $16000. Now after a vehicle get over 25 years old the value can slowly increase especially if it is stock. My 2015 jeep Willy’s 2door factory stock in copper brown pearl is hard to find one that has not been damaged or modified. My wife took it to a Jeep run for a local charity and out of 90 plus Jeeps my Jeep was the only one in that color. I have seen three different Jeeps in that color and not one was the same spec or built. Jeep people love and hate the Jeep. Jeep is like a girlfriend or boyfriend a child in one. How one might ask. You will spend lots of money on it so it looks good you may want more than one like the other person you go see without your other half not knowing. And it old sibling is for harder trails and gets built up. But if it to old it goes to Jeep shows and everyone looks at it. And one more thing you can get any part for a Jeep wrangler or CJ and old military Jeep like a ford model T or A try that with a Pontiac grand am. There a company that make ever piece of a WW2 military Jeep except the drivetrain and glass. No joke.

    Well, I bought mine off Copart for 1550 and it was much better condition as far as both rust and mechanics is concerned. Just a bit bashed up.

    Man jeeps in my neck of the woods are soooo spendy compared to the east coast stuff! Buddy just sold his 89 wrangler for 7500 here on the west coast!

    I guess you’re limited by price but the jeep automatics from that era are shit. That was when you still needed a standard to off road or pull trailers. They put a 3 speed automatic to cater to the (my jeep looks cool but never leaves pavement crowd). You had to pay extra for an automatic whereas now you have to pay extra for a standard. Many may not remember but I 2002 Jeeps were still looked at as just an off road vehicle. I got a new jeep in 2001. It was the base package. I added 3 things, air conditioning, cd player, and full size spare. Now people couldn’t imagine a vehicle without those things even on a base package. Mine didn’t have cruise control. Of course with the 4 cylinder I had trouble getting to 70 so not sure cruise would have helped. The sports came with a few extras but they were basically just a standard wrangler except with the straight 6 instead of a 4 banger. It’s nice that it had the spring tensioner. My 2001 had a bolt that was very hard to get to.

    Looks like it was driven a lot on. The beach and saltwater I would guess since y'all don't used salt on the roads for snow on ice?

    You know that car has been run along the beach splashing through the waves. Everything is damaged by salt water. Get it running and sell it. ( south Florida )
