    Oh dear, I just restarted with MTG and only knew about constructed back then 20 years ago. I came back and did my first 2 drafts with just one friend as we did winston draft which i enjoyed very much. It was hard to abandon my loved precon deck but it got me hungry to dig into other cards more. So i came up here to learn more about the draft format and what unfolds is a sport that is a legacy on its own... When i thought is was 'just' a little other way to play MTG. It hooked me and while i still love my Golgari Precon, i also drafted with colours i never thought i'd enjoy. Maybe this will be a new start to my magic existance : D Tysm for that awesome video revealing the deapth of drafting.

    I've been playing MTG limited formats for a long time. I have won multiple limited PPTQs. The best advice I can give a new player is that you need to have an appreciation for all 5 colors of Magic and what they do. Way too often I see new players refusing to draft a color just because they think they don't like it. If you want to win, draft the deck that is being passed to you no matter what color it is. To become a master, you have to learn to love each color for what it is.

      Only the Avatar, master of all five colors could have stopped them. Though when the workd needed them most, they dissapeared

    You could not have released this at a a better time. I am going at my second draft ever on Friday and I am a brand new player . I went 1-3 on my first one mostly because I missed the signal that a color was taken. Thanks so much for this!

    Two things...First, great music choice. That is EXACTLY the kind of stuff that we here in Detroit love to listen to at lounges and clubs in the heart of the city. So keep that shit coming.
    Second, these Magic techy-type videos are perfect. If you made 2 or 3 of these everyday, you still couldn't make enough. So, just to let you know that this was a great idea and you need to win some type of award for making these. Good job. Also, it would be super if Megan made a 3 to 5 part series on Theme Deck Building. When everything is said and done (if that is even possible here), I wouldn't mind having the majority of my decks be cool themed deck. Thank you, ladies.

    An interesting tip I picked up from an LSV draft stream... If you're looking at the last two cards in pack 1 (land+a colour you're definitely not in) just take the land. It can incentivise the person you're passing to, to get in that colour and hence away from your colour. It's a good sign to throw out there, plus you're not playing it any way so why not?
    Keep the awesome vids coming Maria

      Even better if your stores tournament plays games outside of your drafting pod as well. You care even less about taking cards from the people around you.

    Here is a tip: "Figure out if you are better at remembering cards, or better at striping them off" ... what do i mean by that?
    Well a basic run of the mill deck will have 4x 2, 3, 4, 5 drop, and 4 removal, that is five times a 4 ... so each time you take a pick you can stripe a 'manaslot' or 'removal' off your list. So you just keep 4, 4, 4, 4, 4r in your head, if you pick up a 2 drop, edit -> 3, 4, 4, 4, 4r ... pick up a removal -> 3, 4, 4, 4, 3r ... and so on. Now obviously different strategies warrant for different mana curves; but especially at the beginning of the draft, and if you are better at doing it this way than remembering all your picks. Going for this 5 times 4 striping off will at least set you up with a decent set of cards in each mana slot to pick from and enough removal. And seeing the total amount of cards to pick is 42 (+ 3 lands), and 5x 4 is 20, this means there are still 22 cards to diversify or simply 'forget', pick up a bomb at 6 mana? great!, pick up a strong 1 drop with late game value? great!, pick up a strong 2 drop but you already have 4? well great ! ... given you have your 5x 4 satisfied, your deck can only become better, and at least you will know you will have a play at each spot on the curve and enough removal, and if you don't you know what you are looking for...
    Obviously once you are in a set of colors (generally 2), and know sort of what strategy you are following, you may want to settle for just 2x 5-drops and prioritising more agro drops (or some other curve with some other strategy); but at least you will know ... Try it out, it may not be for everyone to do it like this, but some minds just deal easier with editing what's already there than adding to nothing and keeping track of it all...

      B.R.E.A.D. Prioritize cards in this order. B: bombs. R: Removal. E: Evasion. A: Anything else. D: Duds. If you had Removal to take out your opponents flyers you would have had a better chance. If you had Evasion in your creatures as well, their flyers wouldn't be such an issue. You probably missed a few Bombs when you took Anything else or Duds by accidents.

  • @MalzekRainfuryWS
    @MalzekRainfuryWS 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Example of importance of knowing the set: During Innistrad+Dark Ascension draft when DA had just come out, I was playing a really close, long game. My opponent was at 9 life and I had a 7/7 Falkenrath Marauders on the battlefield and a Fires of the Damned in the graveyard. I attacked for 7 with Falkenrath Marauders putting him at 2, and then went to finish him off with Fires of the Damned since it had Flashback. He used the Fateful Hour mechanic to his advantage and cast Faith's Shield in response, giving himself Protection from Red in response. He beat me his next turn. If I had studied the set better and had Fateful Hour in mind, I could have cast Fires first reducing him to 2, then attacked for 7 and won that round. It's a lesson that has obviously stuck with me since then.

  • @MadCowMusic
    @MadCowMusic 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I think b.r.e.a.d. still works as an overarching strategy; Bombs, Removal, Evasion, Aggro, Dorks, in that order and you will draft stronger decks immediately. I'm a control player that loves goblins and burn so my strategy is more r.b.e.a.d. than b.r.e.a.d. because your threats don't really have to be as good if you can remove the oppenent's bombs then sweep in with evasion and aggro.

    • @andrewdaley4894
      @andrewdaley4894 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Cheers! I think you are spot on. Sometimes not being overwhelmed at who is sitting in the pod helps as well LOL. I like MtGO but it is like click bait sometimes. Folks miss steps or triggers are MtGO does it all for you. What you think MtGO better or worse than face to face? Great work on video!

    • @glhfmagic
      @glhfmagic  8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I think face-to-face is best for beginners - but something like MTGO will help you level up over time - especially by teaching you about triggers and the stack. You will mess up, but that's all part of learning. :)

    I am a paragon of Flashy Card Syndrome. My first draft ever, I drafted Door to Nothingness and didn't look back -- until I lost 0-3 with a completely non-functional deck. (The card is 5 colors and if you get it off, "Target player loses the game." So shiny O.o )
    Apparently I don't learn because last draft I grabbed Nicol Bolas, Dragon God pick 1 pack 1 and ran with it. I have yet to win a match in draft.

    I don't really agree that this is drafting for noobs. For starters, it doesn't mention what drafting is or how it works. It only tells you how to pick cards. Also recommendation #9 - playing mtgo ..... that's going to make people not want to play magic ever again. That software is so bad, I genuinely believe people are better off not playing, than suffering on there.

    I already hate this draft format because of Green. GW and GB are just broken. So many incredible uncommons and they can easily end up with amazing removal due to having the 3 fight cards available.

    • @AndyTargaryen
      @AndyTargaryen 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      A lot of competition over green though. If you don't end up with a Tiger, Leopard, Cub, Rhino, or Lifecraft Cavalry you may be lacking some of the better creatures. I opened an Ajani yesterday, forced green white and my biggest best green creature was a Cowl Prowler :'(. White is super solid tho. Brights, Thopter Arrest, Revoke can get pretty mean.
