Square Baling Straw with John Deere 820 and New Idea 551 Square Baler

  • With the Carlton County Fair behind us, and Jen and Jessica gone to the Minnesota State Fair, it was up to the boys of Trinity Dairy to get the straw baled up and keep the farm running. Alan gets going by using the Farmall B and the New Holland bar rake to combine the windrows. It's been extremely dry in our area, so the straw is pretty much ready to bale immediately. For that, Alan uses the 820 John Deere and New Idea Square baler with a hay basket following behind. Alan and his brother, Paul, then stack the squares in our hay shed.

Trinity Dairy was established in 2006, in Minnesota. Alan and Jennifer farm with their 5 children; Jessica, Justin, Jordan, Joshua, and Jason. We milk a mix of 33 Jersey, Holstein, Brown Swiss, Guernsey, and Ayrshire cattle. We also enjoy sharing our family's love of Draft Horses and using them for logging and other farm work. Dairy Farming in Minnesota can be challenging, but it's a lifestyle we really enjoy. Subscribe today to watch our small family dairy farm and family grow while continuing to thank our Lord for the blessings we've been given.

We are brothers from another mother..I spent my entire summer on a b and a Cunningham crimper and then a rake exactly like that one..in Wisconsin my grandpa bought me the b..when I was 3 from Robert's tractor parts in Eaton Ohio I also cultivated a few acres .and cut firewood and building fence the b never sat idling on our farm for 40 years....now I pray that it's still working for someone else

I like how the old machines still get the work done and they are payed for many years now.
When I was your young lads age back in the late 40s and 50s the bails dropped on the ground picked up with forks put on a truck. yup things have advanced now days.
I enjoy what ever you video, so thanks for what you do and best wishes.

That was my first job as a kid I raked hay all summer w a ford 2000 and an old jd roller bar rake. It was the best job I could have as a kid for 2 reasons one being I’ve always been intrigued by farm equipment and two the hay rake has always been my favorite implement! I made $3/hr which was good money to a 12yr old but in reality I would have done it for free cause I couldn’t think of a better place to be!

Why not grow Soft Red Wheat, and get more straw? I used to grow Oats with Barley, so I could feel the grain. I learned that a decent crop of Wheat would pay enough to actually buy more feed than I could get from my mixed grain, and I got more straw too

Actually, it's the guys running all brand new equipment that keep going out of business or forced to reorganize to keep from going bankrupt.
For our scale of operation, it works just fine. For someone running thousands of acres, of course, it wouldn't make sense to run equipment like ours. Did we ever once say everyone should do it our way? No.
