  • Floyd E. Orr Jr. was born near Pueblo, Colorado. His mother read an article in the hospital, shortly after giving birth, about a horse racer named Sunny Jim Fitzsimmons and decided to call her son "Sunny Jim" Orr, a name he would be known by for life. Sunny Jim grew up around horses and was lassoing them at an early age. At the age of 21 he began a rodeo career in tie-down roping.
In 1958 his parents purchased a sorrel stallion by the name of Tender Boy. Sunny Jim's life changed forever when he started riding that horse. Tender Boy rapidly became an AQHA Champion, competing in roping, reining, halter and working cow horse. In 1961 Orr earned an all-around saddle from the Rocky Mountain Quarter Horse Association. After retiring from the saddle after around 25 years Sunny Jim became a horse trainer. He rode Diamond Sparkle to the AQHA Superhorse title in 1979.
Today Sunny Jim, along with his wife Rayann, purchase and collect bits and spurs and still live in Pueblo, Colorado. Orr says the good Lord blessed him with his ability with horses and that there is one thing that he surely can do and that is ride a horse!
