He used the right tools, but he should have added some more long nails to the tack strip, the chisel he is using is called a "stair tool". The stair below should have been loosened, then set the carpet back into the tackless on the step being repaired, then using the stair tool push the carpet into the crevice on the stair below that was loosened, use the stair tool and a hammer to drive the carpet deep into the crevice that meets at the riser and tread. Staples can be placed in the crevice, not anywhere else unless the stairs are installed cap & band aka. Hollywood, the style on these stairs is called waterfall. Also the kne kicker should have been about an inch away from the riser to set the carpet into the pins.

He almost did it the right way but what he didn't show you or tell you is when you took the carpet in either take your hammer or your chisel and push down on the topless to push the pins into the carpet so it locks it in and also for extra security we would usually shoot a couple staples in it but see what they do now is we don't use cactus on steps anymore cuz of that problem that he had that's why we staple the carpet you TH-camrs have a good day now

He put it back the way it was and left it to just fail again. Now Richard's other knee is doomed a few years from now. Longer nails would have been better. Those little nails really only work under ideal conditions. They're just cheaper and are more likely to stay in the strip when you pull it out of the box; but not necessarily strong enough.

Because many times new houses are built with only plywood on the stairs, people like the softness on the feet and well padded it can be safer if someone does fall than falling on hardwood or granite/marble steps such as use to be common practice.
@@michaelmlt One is better off wearing socks in the house and have hardwood or tiles as flooring. May be cold flooring, but better that than having hidden nails or debris in your dusty and musky carpet. Carpet wall to wall isn't all that glamorous when you have pets around and work in industry.

easiest way to fix this it so remove the carpet in the stairs, who's idea was it to have carpet in a staircase anyway? Where i live this isn't a thing we do.
comes down to personal preference. i think stairs look way better with carpet, although modern staircases generally look bad carpet or no carpet. it also feels nicer to step on (we have always taken our shoes off before we step inside, so socks / bare feet) and if you fall on the stairs it would soften the blow somewhat, unlike falling on bare wood. in addition to all this, i've lived in many houses in my life and in all of them that have had carpet on the stairs (my current one does) i have never encountered this problem, in fact the house i currently live in is somewhere between 80 to 100 + years old and the carpet on the stairs is still going strong.

But some places i have seen wall to wall carpets in EVERY room including bathrooms D: But i think this is more a English thing, but I'm not a big fan of carpets that cant be removed cause of the pets i have first of all.

I was a carpet installer for 35 years you have no idea what you were doing that's that carpet needed to be stretched and recut you didn't even kick it onto the tack strip you don't know what you're doing
You have no idea how to use a carpet kicker a kicker needed to be closer to the riser and kicked and stressed on to the tackles then we trimmed and then talked you have no idea what you're doing I was a carpet installer for 35 years leave it to the pros
The kicker need to be placed closer to the riser kick the carpet stretch it onto the tactless with the kicker riding over the tactless and cut the excess carpet that climbs up the riser and then tuck it you have no idea what you're doing take it from me I installed carpet for 35 years you don't know what you doing
