Great video! I've been a dual user of Mac and PC for audio for a while. Mac you run into software compatibility during OS updates so you end up playing the game of locking your system down or being a few versions behind. Windows requires the maintenance you described here and is more prone to slow down over time and potential hardware conflicts (at least in regards to audio). I think it's a trade off either way. I think the yearly re-install is the move. Keep your personal/project data backed up as well as a back up of your sample libraries, software installers, etc to make the process a bit more painless. Nothing like that first 4-6 months of snappiness you get on a clean Windows install.
If you ever have a problems with a Windows computer is a program. And, it's actually better if you keep your computer(s) on all the time and only restart once in a while. Also, it's important to keep your computer cool and keep lots of space on your SSD/hard drives. Now, using clouds will slow your system down. Also, disable your fetch feature. If you do those little things, you won't have to reinstall Windows.
Man thank you 🙏 it happens on all platforms Intel AMD and Apple a refresh will make it run faster the only issue is the reinstalls so just set a day or 2 aside just for that
I have Windows 10 LTSC installed on my PC for over a year and it's just as fast and snappy and responsive as it was the day I installed it. The only trouble is that my main hard drive is filling up ands I'm sure most of that isn't from the games and apps that I have, and I have all my videos and music and pictures on a second drive.
Agreed. I've had Macs do the same thing once you work the system hard enough and have a lot of apps installed. The only thing I would say about Mac that is a plus, is that there are less drivers to deal with. Otherwise, these days a good windows computer is just as good as any Mac for making music, and Windows 11 is solid, havent had any issues. One of the good things about windows too is that I can still use VSt's that are from like 2008 and are no longer supported, for instance, I still use E-MU Emulator X3 software synth when I'm in the mood for those classic E-MU pads.
I found that the windows drivers are very unstable and that is why I stopped using it for music years ago. I have tons of apps on my Mac and never have issues and I push it pretty hard with Ableton and tons of vsts. The thing that I have issues with are apps that are dongle licensed which has nothing to do with MacOS. iLok is pretty stable but that system that Steinberg uses is terrible.
@@Ast3rixMusicfacts. Those unstable drivers are a deal breaker as far as me doing my music on my windows computer, i use my mac for music. My windows computer drivers gives me issues when gaming also but you have to have a windows computer around so I deal with it
@@mont-doggBeats I only game on the ps5 not a pc gamer. So I ditched all my windows machines years ago at home. I virtualize windows for my test lab for work things but I will never own another windows machine ever. I buy older Mac’s like right now the Intel Mac Pro price is really good and I can replace my trash can. Thinking about doing that with my tax check.
As a former Mac tech: you can keep the og operating system for the life of the device. Most Mac production setups don’t update to the next OS as frequently as consumer setups.
I used to do it all the time when I was running Win 7. I need to do this now, but I'm scared because I haven't managed my files and programs like I should have.
Thats exactly why im thinking of getting off windows. That and they keep trying to force you into signing up for their one drive and Microsoft 365. Nobody wants the OS bugging you constantly to subscribe to their subscriptions. I have a tech background and its like nothing I cant really grasp as far as maintenance and house keeping. Its just i dont see these things getting better. Its how windows is built itself. Like if you ever installed VST3 you could expect that file directory to be in the common files for example...why cant the OS handle files in a more unified way. Backing things up you are never too sure where itll be and will be googling half the time to find out. Game saves are a good example. Registry keys are always left behind, you cant even tell a majority of the time. A refresh always feels good. Reinstalling doesnt. You can do a unattended windows installation, but still getting all the serials, licenses, making sure the files are all dropped in the same directories so stuff loads up without nagging you with errors. We need a easy button lol 😅
Back in the day OS's would be a lot more stable and I really didn't have to reinstall windows that much maybe once every 3-4 years but with win 10 I have had so many issues with things getting corrupted and messing up and having to reinstall the os, the last windows os I installed literally lasted six months, it always takes so long to reinstall everything even if you have backed up a lot of the stuff and put it back on the new os, its such a daunting annoying thing to do especially if you use a lot of different programs and plugins I gave up on the idea of cloning a working os every time I tried it the windows would load then straight away bsod.
My pc is a 2016 build with i5 6600k, 16gb ram ddr. It runs like a dream so i don't know what the issue might be in your case. Other than the annoying popup every month for w11 and not meeting the requirements. My i5 is not compatible wtf? Later this year a new pc for my games and keeping this pc as an offline music production station. I'll probably gradually learn Linux because Windows is a corporate business needing a new pc for w11. Big F to microsoft tbh.
Your right, I thought M.2 would never fail ..Until mines started to delete the clean OS on its own. The M.2 was bad. Lucky I clone my drive when all of the software got installed. I'm still looking at the Bad M.2 like its going to repair itself. That was a 100 dollar drive.
SSD fail and are destined to fail. Hence use the C:\ drive for the windows directories, program and program32 directories and the registry. Use a different drive for data files. My Native Instance directory is on a Samsung s7 drive that I can share between my desktop and my laptop. So are large files from UAD (electric and acoustic piano's), nice of you to ask in installation UAD, kudos.
Nonsense....what happens is that certain settings slow Windows down. For instance, power save settings can slow down a computer. More software running in the back. Traditional mechanical drives. My NI and UAD plugins have their data on a fast drives. But under the name F:\. Windows, takes about 10 seconds to startup. If takes long to shutdown it's hot. The fan cools down the processor, or the video card.
It's ok to re install fresh but every year is just overkill, your SSD probably not like that, i only do when the OS crash , to flush all the shit im using AVG that automated the process, it's also a good anti virus , but there VPN are not that good but the pc optimizer work fine, it's also great on Android phone and tablet, it's really do the flushing job of cache and all temporary shit, you can keep or flush what you want you still have the hand on what to keep and what to flush. Work also for mac OS.
I think u need to maybe look at a mac studio....its alot better at heavy lifting for audio than a comparable windows rig. these m series chips are beastmode! and the ssds are blazing fast!!
the problem is that you’re still using windows. I used windows for a decade and when I switched to using Mac and linux the feeling of having to fight against my devices went away entirely. Microsoft has built in adware that is constantly sending data about what you are doing and this wastes system resources as well as clogs your internet bandwidth.
if you know about windows all that telemetry stuff gets insta turned off, there are free small programs that can do all that for you, but you are right about it being a fight against you with windows it is a bit of a nightmare, I will try linux one day but never moving to the apple dark side
Switch to 11. It is much more stable and problem free. There is no good reason to stick with obsolete 10. That is the solution. Reinstalling 10 is not justifiable.
Not every PC can due to hardware incompatibilities, but then I would upgrade. Windows 10 is getting slower each upgrade without installing additional software. I guess a "gentle" way off microsoft to push people out and not have a repeat of the Windows 7 debacle. Indeed, 11 is a much better version, but ending WordPad was a dick move. But hey, Redmond a-holes, there is always Open Office.
people who still believe that mac doesn't get virus-like windows is people who last used Windows XP, now of these days windows is performing the same way as mac. with same spec

macs drop harware compatibility after a while and you can throw out your interface. I keep it off the internet. no updates. if its not broke...
Only do studio stuff on your computer and you should be fine.

Keep music pc's offline.
